HIV testing behaviors of a cohort of HIV-positive racial/ethnic minority YMSM.

The HIV epidemic in the United States has disproportionately affected young racial/ethnic minority men who have sex with men (YMSM). However, HIV testing rates among young men of color remain low. Within this sample of racial/ethnic minority YMSM (n = 363), the first HIV test was a median of 2 years after men who have sex with men sexual debut.

Evaluation of antioxidant activity of two important memory enhancing medicinal plants Baccopa monnieri and Centella asiatica.

Background: Free radicals or highly reactive oxygen species are capable of inducing oxidative damage to human body. Antioxidants are the compounds which terminate the attack of reactive species and reduce the risk of diseases. Both Baccopa monnieri and Centella asiatica are used in treatment of brain disorders in humans and have almost similar effects.

Bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax in miliary tuberculosis.

Pneumothorax is a common complication in pulmonary tuberculosis that is usually seen with underlying cavitary lesion. However, it is uncommonly seen in patients with miliary tuberculosis. This communication describes bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax in an 18 years' old female patient having miliary tuberculosis.

Social disparities, communication inequalities, and HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and attitudes in India.

Promoting awareness, increasing knowledge, and eliminating stigma is important for stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS. The relation of social determinants and communication inequalities with HIV/AIDS-related cognitive processes has not been studied previously in India. Gender-stratified Poisson regression models of 123,459 women and 73,908 men in the 2005-2006 National Family Health Survey were used to calculate relative risk estimates and 95% confidence intervals for these associations.

Accuracy of a urinary catheter surveillance protocol.

Background: Many hospitals are increasing surveillance for catheter-associated urinary tract infections, which requires documentation of urinary catheter device-days. However, device-days are usually obtained by chart review or nursing reports. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that chart review can provide accurate urinary catheter data compared with physical inspection of the urinary catheter at the bedside.

Cricoid pressure with the Truview Evo2™ laryngoscope improves the glottic view.

Objective: The Truview Evo2™ laryngoscope blade is designed to improve glottic view. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of cricoid pressure (CP) on laryngeal view and the ease of orotracheal intubation with the Truview Evo2 laryngoscope.

Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, 50 patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-II, aged 18 to 60 yr) scheduled for elective surgery were enrolled.

Spontaneous splenic rupture: a rare complication of acute pancreatitis in a patient with Crohn's disease.

Crohn's disease (CD) is an idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract. It frequently involves the ileum, colon and the anorectum. Although rare, acute pancreatitis as a complication of CD involving the duodenum has been described in the literature.

Postoperative bleeding in an elderly patient from acquired factor V inhibitor: rapid response to immunosuppressive therapy.

Acquired factor V inhibitor is a rare but potentially life-threatening hemorrhagic disorder caused by the development of autoantibodies directed against coagulation factor V. The management of acute bleeding and inhibitor eradication is the mainstay of the treatment. The authors report a case of a 79-year-old man who underwent right hip arthroplasty and postoperatively, when on Coumadin for deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis, developed bleeding from the surgical site with a hematoma and abnormal coagulation parameters.

7, 8-diacetoxy-4-methylcoumarin induced cell death in human tumor cells is influenced by calreticulin.

Calreticulin (CRT), an endoplasmic reticulum resident protein demonstrates transacetylase activity in presence of 7, 8 diacetoxy-4-methyl coumarin (DAMC) in vitro. To investigate the possible role of CRT and DAMC mediated protein acetylation in cells, we investigated the effects of DAMC in tumor cells with different levels of CRT. DAMC was more toxic (clonogenicity, metabolic viability and proliferation) to human glioma cells (BMG-1) expressing low endogenous CRT level as compared to head and neck carcinoma cells (KB) with a high CRT level.

Robotic telemanipulating surgical systems for laparoscopy: the story so far in the UK.

Surgical robotics is, at present, one of the most dynamically developing areas of biomedical engineering that has been proven to increase the stability and robustness of surgery. Robotics can integrate, assist, control and extend the human capabilities, correcting for manual errors, or record the spatial points-of-interest and motions. This is of importance as an adjunct to many laparoscopic subspecialty procedures, from cardiac to pelvic surgery.

Non-small cell lung carcinoma presenting as carcinomatous meningitis.

Meningeal carcinomatosis is a diffuse infiltration of leptomeninges and sub arachnoid space by malignant cells metastasizing from systemic cancer. Primary bronchogenic carcinoma presenting as carcinomatous meningitis is a very rare occurrence in clinical practice, often occurring during the treatment course of the underlying malignancy. We present this rare presentation in a young non-smoker male.

Shilajit: A panacea for high-altitude problems.

High altitude problems like hypoxia, acute mountain sickness, high altitude cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, insomnia, tiredness, lethargy, lack of appetite, body pain, dementia, and depression may occur when a person or a soldier residing in a lower altitude ascends to high-altitude areas. These problems arise due to low atmospheric pressure, severe cold, high intensity of solar radiation, high wind velocity, and very high fluctuation of day and night temperatures in these regions. These problems may escalate rapidly and may sometimes become life-threatening.

Ochoa or Urofacial syndrome.

We report a 10 year old boy presenting with bilateral hydronephrosis and peculiar facial expression suggestive of Ochoa Syndrome or Urofacial syndrome. He had chronic renal failure which was managed conservatively.

Simultaneous Detection of Mixed Infection of Onion yellow dwarf virus and an Allexivirus in RT-PCR for Ensuring Virus Free Onion Bulbs.

Reduced seed production in onion is associated with Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV), a filamentous Potyvirus. Onion is also infected with other filamentous virus particles suspected to be Allexivirus. RT-PCR was used to detect mixed infection of both the viruses in leaves and bulbs.

Testicular and paratesticular tumours in the prepubertal population.

Prepubertal testicular and paratesticular tumours are a rare group of tumours, distinct from postpubertal paediatric and adult tumours of this region. Tumours within this group are testicular germ-cell tumours (such as benign teratoma, epidermoid cyst and malignant yolk-sac tumours) and stromal tumours (such as juvenile granulosa-cell, Leydig-cell, and Sertoli-cell tumours). Paratesticular tumours can be benign (lipoma, leiomyoma, haemangioma) or malignant (rhabdomyosarcoma, melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy).

Clinical profile of patients having splenic involvement in tuberculosis.

Background: Tuberculosis of spleen is very rare, usually seen in disseminated or miliary form of the disease and in patients having HIV infection. Splenic tuberculosis is currently described poorly in available literature.

Objectives: In this series, we analyzed the clinical profile of patients having splenic involvement in tuberculosis.
