School health-care team members' reflections of their promotion of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR): Important but neglected.

Objective: Young people are prioritized regarding the promotion and safeguarding of sexual and reproductive health and rights - SRHR. In Sweden, the school is seen as an important arena with members of the school health-care or SHC team as vital actors in this work. This study explored SRHR-related work in SHC teams in Sweden.

Exonic trinucleotide repeat expansions in ZFHX3 cause spinocerebellar ataxia type 4: A poly-glycine disease.

Autosomal-dominant ataxia with sensory and autonomic neuropathy is a highly specific combined phenotype that we described in two Swedish kindreds in 2014; its genetic cause had remained unknown. Here, we report the discovery of exonic GGC trinucleotide repeat expansions, encoding poly-glycine, in zinc finger homeobox 3 (ZFHX3) in these families. The expansions were identified in whole-genome datasets within genomic segments that all affected family members shared.

The cascade of care for pregnant women with latent tuberculosis infection in a high-income country.

Background: Pregnant women have an increased risk of developing active tuberculosis (TB). The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommends screening of active TB and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among pregnant women from countries with high TB incidence at Maternal Health Care (MHC) clinics. In Östergötland County, Sweden, a screening program has been active since 2013.

Limitations and opportunities of smallholders' practical knowledge when dealing with pig health issues in northern Uganda.

Pig production has a short history in Uganda. The majority of pigs are kept by smallholder farmers in rural areas where access to veterinary services is limited, and pig keeping has been suggested as a potential pathway out of poverty for smallholders. Previous research has identified the disease of African swine fever (ASF) as a major threat, causing high mortalities in pigs.

Evaluation of pea genotype PI180693 partial resistance towards aphanomyces root rot in commercial pea breeding.

The cultivation of vining pea () faces a major constraint with root rot diseases, caused by a complex of soil-borne pathogens including the oomycetes and . Disease resistant commercial varieties are lacking but the landrace PI180693 is used as a source of partial resistance in ongoing pea breeding programs. In this study, the level of resistance and their interaction with virulence levels of six new back-crossed pea breeding lines, deriving from the cross between the susceptible commercial cultivar Linnea and PI180693, were evaluated for their resistance towards aphanomyces root rot in growth chamber and green house tests.

Introduction: It is well-known that people with dementia living in residential care facilities spend most of their time not engaged in meaningful activities. Being involved in activities can improve their quality of life. Animal-assisted therapy is an activity that can evoke engagement and joy.

Significant and rapid reduction of free endotoxin using a dialkylcarbamoyl chloride-coated wound dressing.

Objective: Endotoxin causes inflammation and can impair wound healing. Conventional methods that reduce bioburden in wounds by killing microorganisms using antibiotics, topical antimicrobials or antimicrobial dressings may induce endotoxin release from Gram-negative bacteria. Another approach is to reduce bioburden by adsorbing microorganisms, without killing them, using dialkylcarbamoyl chloride (DACC)-coated wound dressings.

Diverging Discourses: Animal Health Challenges and Veterinary Care in Northern Uganda.

People in northern Uganda are currently rebuilding their lives after a lengthy period of conflict. To facilitate this, the Ugandan government and donors have promoted investment in pigs as an important strategy for generating income quickly and ensuring livelihood security. In this context, animal health issues are an acknowledged challenge, creating uncertainty for animal owners who risk losing both their animals and income.

Limbic encephalitis in a neuroscientist: CASPR 2 antibody-associated disease after antigen exposure.

Autoimmune limbic encephalitis is part of CASPR 2 antibody-associated disease. A man with this rare disorder and a very high antibody titre had a unique history of laboratory exposure to the antigen. Together with earlier observations this case calls for caution in laboratory handling of nerve tissue.

Spontaneous spondylodiscitis in an elderly lady.

A 76-year-old woman presented following two episodes of unexplained falls at home. Blood cultures were positive for and following investigations she was diagnosed with L4/L5 spondylodiscitis confirmed on spine MRI. She was initially treated with intravenous metronidazole and flucloxacillin prior to switching to ceftriaxone with good results.

Desorption products during linear heating of copper zeolites with pre-adsorbed methanol.

Desorption products from zeolites with medium (MFI) and small (CHA) pores and with and without ion-exchanged copper were studied during linear heating after the pre-adsorption of methanol using a chemical flow reactor with a gas phase Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The methanol desorption profiles were deconvoluted and compared with those predicted from first-principles calculations. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was used to study the samples during methanol desorption following a step-wise increase of the sample temperature.

Being questioned as parents: An interview study with Swedish commissioning parents using transnational surrogacy.

This study sought to explore how Swedish parents who had commissioned surrogacy abroad experienced the process of parenthood recognition. The study consisted of in-depth interviews with five couples and 10 individuals representing 10 additional couples who had used surrogacy abroad, mainly in India. The construction of motherhood and fatherhood in the Swedish system contradicts how parenthood is defined in the surrogacy process.

Surrogate mother - praiseworthy or stigmatized: a qualitative study on perceptions of surrogacy in Assam, India.

Background: Surrogacy is a reproductive practice that has been strongly marketed in India as a solution for childless couples. As a result, the number of surrogacy clinics is increasing. Meanwhile, a global discourse on surrogacy, originating from a Western perspective, has characterized surrogacy as being exploitative of women in low-income settings, where poverty drives them to become surrogate mothers.

Ischemic stroke triggers neurogenesis from neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and migration of newly formed neuroblasts toward the damaged striatum where they differentiate to mature neurons. Whether it is the injury per se or the associated inflammation that gives rise to this endogenous neurogenic response is unknown. Here we showed that inflammation without corresponding neuronal loss caused by intrastriatal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection leads to striatal neurogenesis in rats comparable to that after a 30 min middle cerebral artery occlusion, as characterized by striatal DCX+ neuroblast recruitment and mature NeuN+/BrdU+ neuron formation.

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in northern Sweden: clinical characteristics and practical guidance.

Conclusion: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) patients with high surgical treatment frequency (≥ 1/year, HF) were significantly younger and had a more widespread laryngeal disease compared to a low frequency treated group (< 1 treatment/year, LF). This study confirms the existence of a clinical RRP group, not primarily related to HPV sub-type, but more care-intensive and in need of more vigilant follow-up.

Objectives: RRP is associated with high morbidity due to its influence on breathing and voice.

Views of Swedish commissioning parents relating to the exploitation discourse in using transnational surrogacy.

Transnational surrogacy, when people travel abroad for reproduction with the help of a surrogate mother, is a heavily debated phenomenon. One of the most salient discourses on surrogacy is the one affirming that Westerners, in their quest for having a child, exploit poor women in countries such as India. As surrogacy within the Swedish health care system is not permitted, Swedish commissioning parents have used transnational surrogacy, and the majority has turned to India.

Analysis of carious dentine using FTIR and ToF-SIMS.

Apart from the Maillard reaction, other processes, such as esterification, take place in carious tissue. The aim of the present study was to analyse sound and carious dentine in terms of ester groups and their reaction with hydrazine derivate using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Carious and sound dentine from human premolars were excavated in three series (Experimental Parts I-III) and separated into inner and outer layers of carious dentine.

A national survey on current dietary advice was conducted to serve as background for the present study on how drinking during a meal influenced caloric consumption.

Comparing and visualizing titanium implant integration in rat bone using 2D and 3D techniques.

The aim was to compare the osseointegration of grit-blasted implants with and without a hydrogen fluoride treatment in rat tibia and femur, and to visualize bone formation using state-of-the-art 3D visualization techniques. Grit-blasted implants were inserted in femur and tibia of 10 Sprague-Dawley rats (4 implants/rat). Four weeks after insertion, bone implant samples were retrieved.

Biofilm formation by Staphylococcus epidermidis is a cause of infections related to peritoneal dialysis (PD). We have used a PD catheter flow-cell model in combination with confocal scanning laser microscopy and atomic force microscopy to study biofilm formation by S. epidermidis.

Background And Purpose: Clinical stroke trials with stem cell-based approaches aiming for trophic actions, modulation of inflammation and neuroprotection are ongoing. However, experimental studies also suggest that neuronal replacement by grafted neural stem cells (NSCs) and possibly by endogenous NSCs from the subventricular zone (SVZ) may restore function in the stroke-damaged striatum. To evaluate the potential clinical impact of these findings, we analyzed the spatial relationship of infarcts to the SVZ and the proportion of individuals with striatal lesions in a consecutive series of ischaemic stroke patients.

[11C](R)-PK11195 binding has been quantified using reference region approaches, with the reference defined anatomically or using unsupervised or supervised clustering algorithms. Kinetic compartment modelling so far has not been presented.
