User experience in data visualization is typically assessed through post-viewing self-reports, but these overlook the dynamic cognitive processes during interaction. This study explores the use of mind wandering- a phenomenon where attention spontaneously shifts from a primary task to internal, task-related thoughts or unrelated distractions- as a dynamic measure during visualization exploration. Participants reported mind wandering while viewing visualizations from a pre-labeled visualization database and then provided quantitative ratings of trust, engagement, and design quality, along with qualitative descriptions and short-term/long-term recall assessments.

Eight molecular structures (BT-A1 to BT-A8) with high-performance non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) were selected for organic solar cells (OSCs) and non-linear optical (NLO) applications. Their electronic, photovoltaic (PV) and optoelectronic properties were tuned by adding powerful electron-withdrawing groups to the acceptor (A) of the D-π-A-π-D structure. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a vascular disease characterized by elevated pulmonary arterial pressure, leading to right ventricular failure and death. Pathogenic features of PH include endothelial apoptosis and vascular inflammation, which drive vascular remodeling and increased pulmonary arterial pressure. Although it is well known that hypoxia incites unleashed cellular inflammation, the mechanisms of exaggerated cellular inflammation in hypoxic conditions are not known. We observed augmented proliferation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC), precursors of inflammatory leukocytes, in mice under hypoxia. Consistently, a transcriptomic analysis of human HSPC exposed to hypoxic conditions revealed elevated expression of genes involved in progenitor proliferation and differentiation.

The study investigated the effect of polyphenols present in Cassia auriculata (CA) leaves in enhancing the stability of the collagen protein and the wound healing potential of collagen films. The crude ethanol extract of CA was analyzed for the presence of phytochemicals and purified by column chromatography using solvents with increasing polarity. Electric transmission power grids are being revamped with the widespread deployment of GPS-enabled phasor measurement units (PMUs) for real-time wide-area monitoring and control via precise, time-synchronized measurements of voltage and current. Large, concurrently produced volumes of noisy data hinder PMU usability, particularly for the analysis of power oscillation and load fluctuation events in the grid. We examine visualization challenges for events in the electric power grid and develop PMUVis, a visualization platform that supports scalable analysis of grid network topology and anomalous events in near time.

Myeloid cells, such as neutrophils, are produced in the bone marrow in high quantities and are important in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases such as pulmonary hypertension (PH). Biodegradation of phenol using bacteria is recognized as an efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach for reducing phenol pollutants compared to the current conventional physicochemical processes adopted. A potential phenol degrading bacterial strain MSSRFPD35 was isolated and identified from rhizosphere grown in distillery effluent contaminated sites. It showed high phenol degrading efficiency up to 1117 mg L within 60 h by the secretion of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase via ortho intradial pathway.

Ascidians (Phylum: Chordata) are sessile and filter-feeding marine animal, species identification of ascidians is possible by observing various morphological and anatomical features in various stages of life span. However, this method is labor intensive, time-consuming and very difficult for non-specialists particularly when dealing with field collections. Suborder Aplousobranchiata and Phlebobranchiata is the largest group of tunicates within, morphological and molecular data suggest that Didemnidae and Ascidiidae are monophyletic, but the monophyly of each genus and their phylogenetic relationships are still poorly understood.

There is extensive experimental data showing that the final pH and buffer composition after protein diafiltration (DF), particularly with monoclonal antibodies, can be considerably different than that in the DF buffer due to electrostatic interactions between the charged protein and the charged ions. Previous models for this behavior have focused on the final (equilibrium) partitioning and are unable to explain the complex pH and concentration profiles during the DF process. The objective of this study is to develop a new model for antibody DF based on solution of the transient mass balance equations, with the permeate concentrations of the charged species evaluated assuming Donnan equilibrium across the semipermeable membrane in combination with electroneutrality constraints.

Fractionation of the bovine glycomacropeptide (GMP) from the other proteins in cheese whey was examined using ultrafiltration membranes surface modified to contain positively charged polymer brushes made of polyhexamethylene biguanide. By placing a strong positive charge on a 1000 kDa ultrafiltration membrane and adjusting the pH of whey close to the isoelectric point of GMP, a 14-fold increase in selectivity was observed compared to unmodified membranes. A one stage membrane system gave 90% pure GMP and a three-stage rectification system gave 97% pure GMP.

In this work, milk protein concentrate (MPC) was made using wide-pore negatively charged ultrafiltration membranes. The charged membranes were used for a six-fold volume concentration of skim milk and subsequent diafiltration to mimic the industrial MPC process. The charged 100 kDa membranes had at least a four-fold higher permeate flux at the same protein recovery as unmodified 30 kDa membranes, which are currently used in the dairy industry to make MPC.

This work examines the ultrafiltration behavior of partially retained proteins like lysozyme and completely retained proteins like monoclonal antibodies using single pass tangential flow filtration (SPTFF) modules with different screen channels and molecular weight cut-offs. When the staging of the SPTFF used the same membrane area in each stage, there was no impact of the module screened channel or the buffer matrix on the final concentration achieved for completely retained monoclonal antibodies. A hybrid configuration containing 30 kDa membranes and 50 kDa membranes increased the maximum achievable concentration for both the monoclonal antibodies used in this work, at the same time, allowing a two-fold to four-fold increase in normalized feed flow-rate through the system compared to only the 30 kDa or only the 50 kDa membranes.
