Article Synopsis
  • Researchers collected Hyalomma anatolicum ticks from dairy farms in Haryana to assess their resistance to acaricides deltamethrin and coumaphos.
  • The study found that Charkhi Dadri tick larvae were completely susceptible, while some isolates from Hisar showed varying levels of resistance to coumaphos and deltamethrin.
  • Increased activity of certain detoxification enzymes was linked to the resistance, but no genetic mutations were detected in the genes tested, suggesting that heightened enzyme expression contributes to the ticks' resistance.

Chemical control of tick infestation on dairy farms in India strongly relies upon the use of synthetic pyrethroids (deltamethrin) and organophosphate (coumaphos) drugs. Therefore, the present manuscript aims to investigate the resistance status of Rhipicephalus microplus ticks against these acaricides. Fully engorged adult R.

To combat the problem of acaricide resistance in ticks, efforts have been made to develop eco-friendly herbal acaricides which are safe for animal use with no possibilities of evoking environment and residual toxicity. In the present study, the acaricidal properties of a commonly available plant, Annona squamosa have been established to develop a novel antitick phytoformulation using leaf extract, suitable solvents and emulsifier for managing resistant tick infestations in animals. The quality control of the safe and stable phytoformulation using Rutin as a major constituent was maintained by HPTLC profiling.

Thelazia callipaeda is a vector borne zoonotic nematode transmitted by drosophilid flies of Phortica genus. It has been reported in humans from different parts of India including North Eastern region. Only one case of canine ocular thelaziosis has been reported from southern India while no case has yet been reported from the rest of the country.

A comparative analysis of esterases in susceptible and resistant ticks revealed six types of esterases (EST-1b, EST-2b, EST-3b, EST-4b, EST-5b and EST-6b) in Rhipicephalus microplus and four types (EST-1h, EST-2h, EST-3h, EST-4h) in Hyalomma anatolicum using α-naphthyl acetate substrate. Inhibition studies with eserine sulfate, p-chloromercuribenzoate, copper sulphate and phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride revealed a marked variation in band intensity between susceptible and resistant ticks, with the latter being more intense. Qualitative expression of EST-4b along with an extra band of EST-5b and EST-6b were indicative of deltamethrin and diazinon resistance in R.

Acaricide resistance status of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Hyalomma anatolicum ticks against deltamethrin and diazinon was assessed in Hisar (Haryana) and its adjoining district Churu (Rajasthan) using adult immersion test (AIT) and larval packet test (LPT). The mortality slope, LC50, LC95, 95 % confidence limit and resistance factor of field ticks were determined. Results showed that R.
