Accumulation of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), a marker of lipid peroxidation, has various favorable and unfavorable effects on cancer cells; however, the clinicopathological significance of its accumulation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its metabolic pathway remain unknown. This study analyzed 4-HNE accumulation and its clinicopathological significance in HCC. Of the 221 cases, 160 showed relatively low accumulation of 4-HNE in HCC tissues, which was an independent prognostic predictor.

EDTA-induced pseudothrombocytopenia in hematopoietic stem cell donor.

We herein report a case of peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) involving a donor with EDTA-induced pseudothrombocytopenia (PTCP). The apheresis product was inspected for 24 h and there was no platelet clumping or thrombocytopenia. In the first 14 months after PBSCT, there has been no transfer of PTCP symptoms.

Catheter-related bloodstream infection in patients With severe anorexia nervosa.

Purpose: Anorexia nervosa (AN) may be treated with intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH) that may be associated with catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI).

Design And Methods: Retrospective chart review was conducted to compare those who developed CRBSI were compared with those who did not.

Findings: Of 34 patients, 17 episodes of AN treated with IVH were identified, of which five resulted in CRBSI.

Convenience of Hgb-O detected by optical method in XN-series hematology analyzers in evaluating hemoglobin concentration in samples with chylous turbidity.

The chylous turbidity of blood samples is one of the causes of false-high hemoglobin (Hgb) concentration measurements by the colorimetric method, which has been widely applied in hematology analyzers. In such cases, additional manual procedures are required to correct Hgb concentrations. We therefore examined the effectiveness of an optical method for measuring Hgb concentrations in samples with chylous turbidity using Hgb-O in the reticulocyte channel equipped in XN-series analyzers (Sysmex, Kobe, Japan).

Risk factors for walled-off necrosis associated with severe acute pancreatitis: A multicenter retrospective observational study.

Background: This study aimed to identify the risk factors for walled-off necrosis (WON) associated with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP).

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in eight institutions in Japan between 2014 and 2017. We analyzed WON incidence, patient characteristics, and risk factors for WON in patients with SAP who were observed for >28 days.

A rare case of peliosis hepatis in a patient with chronic renal failure and renal cell carcinoma.

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare disease characterized by the presence of sinusoidal dilation and blood-filled cysts throughout the hepatic parenchyma. We report a case of PH in a 49-year-old woman with chronic renal failure (CRF) on hemodialysis and with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a 35-mm-diameter, hypervascular tumor in the liver and RCC in the right renal cyst.

A case of pancreatic pseudocysts accompanied by infection, pseudoaneurysm ruptures, and pseudocystocolonic fistulae.

Pancreatic pseudocysts (PPs) can be accompanied by infection, pseudoaneurysm ruptures, and fistulae to other organs, which can be fatal without appropriate treatment. Herein, we present the case of an 82-year-old man with PPs accompanied by infection, pseudoaneurysm rupture, and pseudocystocolonic fistula that were managed via multidisciplinary treatment. Computed tomography (CT) revealed two inflamed PPs, one each in the pancreatic head and tail.

A Precise Method for Analysis of Elemental Distribution Inside Solute Clusters.

A procedure to analyze the elemental concentration distribution inside solute clusters after detection of clusters from atom probe tomography data set was proposed. We developed a code which can directly illustrate an average concentration profile inside a cluster even in the case of including various sizes of ellipsoidal clusters. The profile can be with respect to absolute distance and includes errors in each data point.

Electroconvulsive Therapy While Receiving OralAnticoagulation for Deep Venous Thrombosis:Report on Eight Cases and a Review of theLiterature.

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is indicated for critical psychiatric conditions, which themselves constitute a risk for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) owing to prolonged immobility, dehydration, and venous stasis.

Objective: We describe challenging instances of ECT implementation while taking direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs).

Method: We report on 8 patients receiving DOACs for DVT who were successfully treated with ECT at the University of Yamanashi Hospital.

Structural and compositional study of precipitates in under-aged Cu-added Al-Mg-Si alloy.

Atomic scale characterization of fine precipitates in an under-aged Cu added Al-Mg-Si alloy was carried out by combination of atomically-resolved annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Two types of precipitates were observed in the alloy. In the case of ordered β" precipitates, β" was proposed as MgAlSi (x ≈ 1) with solute Cu atoms replacing Al site of β" precipitate.

Obesity-associated activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance; however, influences of mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) inhibition remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of MR inhibition using eplerenone, a selective MR antagonist, in C57BL/6 mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks. Eplerenone prevented excessive body weight gain and fat accumulation, ameliorated glucose intolerance and insulin resistance and enhanced energy metabolism.

[Use of dexmedetomidine hydrochloride as a sedative during local therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma].

Sedation using dexmedetomidine hydrochloride (DEX) was administered to patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prior to local therapy. Because the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system has been implicated in the development of insulin resistance and promotion of fibrosis in some tissues, such as the vasculature, we examined the effect of eplerenone, a selective mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonist, on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and metabolic phenotypes in a mouse model reflecting metabolic syndrome in humans. We adopted liver-specific transgenic (Tg) mice overexpressing the active form of sterol response element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) fed a high-fat and fructose diet (HFFD) as the animal model in the present study. When wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 and liver-specific SREBP-1c Tg mice grew while being fed HFFD for 12 wk, body weight and epididymal fat weight increased in both groups with an elevation in blood pressure and dyslipidemia.

The Tokyo Fire Department (TFD) ambulance units are transporting more people than ever before with elderly patients on the increase. The TFD then set up the Emergency Telephone Consultation Center in 2007 to help citizens properly use EMS services, asking non-emergency cases to go to the hospital by themselves or sending the ambulance to serious cases. Transportation of all "home patients" (receiving medical services at home, not in the hospital) by fire department ambulances would leave really serious patients behind.

Influence of experimental parameters on the composition of precipitates in metallic alloys.

We report on the change in the shape, size and composition of spherical precipitates, found in an Fe-Cu and an Al-Ag alloy, as the base temperature, pulsing mode and parameters are adjusted. In the case of the Al-Ag alloy, the difference in the evaporation field between precipitates and matrix can be minimised at low temperature, while in the Fe-Cu alloy minimal changes are observed within the range of experimental conditions investigated. Comparison with transmission electron microscopy shows that some experimental conditions yield accurate precipitates size, while others enable reaching accurate composition measurements.

Effect of Mg or Ag addition on the evaporation field of Al.

It is known that the distribution of the charge-states as well as the evaporation field shift to higher values as the specimen temperature is decreased at a constant rate of evaporation. This study has explored the effect of Mg or Ag addition on the evaporation field of Al in terms of the charge state distribution of the field evaporated Al ions. The fractional abundance of Al(2+) ions with respect to the total Al ions in Al-Mg alloy is lower than that in pure Al, whereas it shows higher level in the Al-Ag alloy at lower temperatures.
