Article Synopsis
  • - Disorders of hyperpigmentation are common and hydroquinone is a widely used treatment, despite potential side effects like acne, skin discoloration (ochronosis), and irritation.
  • - Rarely, hydroquinone can cause leukoderma, typically limited to the area where it is applied, but a unique case is reported involving widespread facial leukoderma from localized use.
  • - The reported leukoderma can be effectively treated using methods for vitiligo, if addressed promptly and correctly.

Quantifying the trophic basis of production for freshwater metazoa at broad spatial scales is key to understanding ecosystem function and has been a research priority for decades. However, previous lotic food web studies have been limited by geographic coverage or methodological constraints. We used compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis of amino acids (AAs) to estimate basal resource contributions to fish consumers in streams spanning grassland, montane and semi-arid ecoregions of the temperate steppe biome on two continents.

Calciphylaxis is a rare dermatologic condition that is primarily associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Nonuremic calciphylaxis has been reported in patients with autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus and other hypercoagulable states such as anti-phospholipid syndrome. New research throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has shown an increased inflammatory and coagulopathic complication of COVID-19.

Stream fishes are restricted to specific environments with appropriate habitats for feeding and reproduction. Interactions between streams and surrounding landscapes influence the availability and type of fish habitat, nutrient concentrations, suspended solids, and substrate composition. Valley width and gradient are geomorphological variables that influence the frequency and intensity that a stream interacts with the surrounding landscape.

Background: Dental implants are sometimes initially placed in a wrong position leading to esthetic damage, which is difficult to solve with prosthetics. Moreover, implants placed in the anterior sector, like ankylosed teeth, are frequently found in a wrong position over time with infraocclusion because of continuous anterior alveolar growth. Different treatments have been proposed to manage the consequences of malpositioned dental implants.

Introduction: Burn injury and reconstructive operations often result in severe pain, particularly at skin graft donor sites. Traditional local anesthetics administered intraoperatively control pain at donor sites, but the duration of action is short. Liposomal bupivacaine, a novel local anesthetic, can provide sustained-release analgesia for 72h.

Long-term monitoring of species assemblages provides a unique opportunity to test hypotheses regarding environmentally induced directional trajectories of freshwater species assemblages. We used 57 years of lockchamber fish rotenone and boat electrofishing survey data (1957-2014) collected by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) to test for directional trajectories in taxonomy, trophic classifications, and life history strategies of freshwater fish assemblages in the Ohio River Basin. We found significant changes in taxonomic and trophic composition of freshwater fishes in the Ohio River Basin.

Using implant to replace a tooth is a well known treatment. However, the practitioner must keep in mind that osteointegrated implants behave like ankylosed teeth, and their evolution does not follow the alveolar processes of the adjacent teeth during growth. This growth decreases after 20 years, but remains present.

Different treatments have been proposed to manage the consequences of ankylosed teeth. This clinical report, which includes several different clinical conditions, describes an orthodontic bone-stretching procedure that can be used to relocate ankylosed teeth. The orthodontic bone-stretching technique involves only partial osteotomies, without the mobilization or repositioning of the alveolar segment, combined with orthodontic forces.

Ankylosed anterior teeth are associated with infraclusion and can lead to a concomitant significant esthetic defect. After a review of the techniques used move these teeth into the arch, this article describes a new technique to restore occlusion and improve esthetics, or to prepare the case for either a prosthetic or implant treatment, Orthodontic Bone Stretching (OBS). This technic combines partial corticotomy and orthodontic treatment and produces bone stretching.

Purpose: To compare the experiences of perceived stigma (PS) in both patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and examine its relationship to patient-reported outcomes in both patient populations.

Methods: IBD and IBS patients were recruited from an outpatient gastroenterology clinic and online via support message boards and classifieds. Participants completed a series of questionnaires to measure the perception of illness stigma, psychological functioning, and clinical and demographic data.

Background: Psychotherapy for Crohn's disease (CD) has focused on patients with psychological distress. Another approach to optimize management of CD is to target patients who do not exhibit psychological distress but engage in behaviors that undermine treatment efficacy / increase risk for flare. We sought to determine the feasibility/acceptability and estimate the effects of a program framed around Project Management (PM) principles on CD outcomes.

Objective: The present study investigated the influence of race on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment among 94 African American and 214 Caucasian female victims of interpersonal violence participating in 2 studies of cognitive-behavioral treatment for PTSD that were conducted sequentially and continuously.

Method: In each study, participants were randomized into 1 of 3 conditions. The first study compared cognitive processing therapy with prolonged exposure and a delayed treatment condition.

Participants' reactions to pretreatment assessments have not been studied as part of a randomized clinical trial (RCT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The current study examined participants' reactions in women with PTSD who completed pretreatment assessments during an RCT. We assessed participant reactions (N = 100) to a pretreatment assessment that included self-report questionnaires, interviews, and psychophysiological assessment.

A series of 100 consecutive victims of cardiopulmonary arrest were evaluated for treatment in the field by paramedic teams and for the patients' subsequent course. Analysis of the data correlated success rates with specific factors, including response, treatment and transportation times, proximity to the emergency center, establishment of an intravenous line and administration of drugs, pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents, cardiopulmonary resuscitation by a bystander, cardiopulmonary arrest in the presence of the team, and other factors. Successful resuscitation was accomplished in 24% of cases, and 7% of the victims ultimately returned to their previous lifestyles.
