Confronting the Medical Leviathan: Reading a Report from the Front Lines.

This essay discusses how two physicians in Britain's National Health Service describe and analyze the conditions of their work: how algorithms and protocols structure the care they can provide and create the dilemmas they and their patients face. In these issues, the NHS is a canary in the mineshaft of contemporary Western health care. NHS practices are understood as how states and state-like entities, Leviathans, seek to render their subjects legible; in this instance, to make both physicians and patients transparently visible to surveillance and administration by standardizing medical work and patient need.

Three Types of Stories About Encountering Bioethics.

This commentary discusses 12 stories about receiving ethics consultation in hospitals. Five stories are by physicians, three by nurses, and four by family members; three of the writers have training in bioethics. Some writers requested the consultation, others experienced the consultation as an imposition forced upon them, and in two cases, the story is about the absence of any consultation service.

Asbestos-Related lung Cancer: An underappreciated oncological issue.

Asbestos, a group of class I (WHO) carcinogenic fibers, is the main cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos inhalation also increases the risk to develop other solid tumours with lung cancer as the most prominent example [91]. The incidence of asbestos-related lung cancer (ARLC) is estimated to be to six times larger than the mesothelioma incidence thereby becoming an important health issue [86].

Developing a Multi-Spectral NIR LED-Based Instrument for the Detection of Pesticide Residues Containing Chlorpyrifos-Methyl in Rough, Brown, and Milled Rice.

A recent study showed the potential of the DA Perten 7200 NIR Spectrometer in detecting chlorpyrifos-methyl pesticide residue in rough, brown, and milled rice. However, this instrument is still lab-based and generally suited for point-of-sale testing. To provide a field-deployable version of this technique, an existing light emitting diode (LED)-based instrument that provides discrete NIR wavelength illumination and reflectance spectra over the range of 850-1550 nm was tested.

Combination Insecticide Treatments with Methoprene and Pyrethrin for Control of Khapra Beetle Larvae on Different Commodities.

Everts, the khapra beetle, is a serious pest of stored products throughout the world. Larvae pose a significant threat to stored products because they feed on >100 different commodities, possess the ability to enter facultative diapause, and are difficult to detect. Control methods for include fumigation, contact insecticides, trapping, and insecticide-incorporated packaging.

Mercury air, urine monitoring and health effects on occupationally exposed dental healthcare workers in Delhi, India.

Background: Mercury (Hg) is a toxic heavy metal with multiple uses in various medical devices. Hg is used in dentistry as a restorative material. Such use creates significant exposure to dental practitioners.

Aerosolized Insecticide Spray Distributions and Relationships to Efficacy against Stored Product Pests.

Aerosol insecticides are widely used in stored product insect management programs in food facilities. Previous research has shown spatial variation in aerosol efficacy within facilities, but information on how spatial patterns of aerosol droplet concentration, size distribution, dispersal, and deposition contribute to this variation in efficacy is limited. We tested the effect of simultaneous infestation by adults of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) and the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) on six sorghum varieties.

Mongolia: Failure of Total Banning of Asbestos.

The primary uses of asbestos in Mongolia are in thermal power plants, construction and at railway companies. There is, however, limited data on both asbestos consumption and asbestos related disease (ARD) in Mongolia. The purpose of this paper is to report on the failure to completely ban asbestos in Mongolia.

Four mesothelioma cases from a single automotive dealership: A case series.

Background: Four cases of mesothelioma were noted in a workplace of some 110 persons at a tractor dealership between 2006 and 2023. Each worker had a different job title.

Methods: Medical-legal case material was reviewed and abstracted from four cases from the same dealership, all supplied via one law firm.

While Icarus Falls: Conditions for Pandemic Ethics.

This symposium contribution presents three vignettes of resistance to COVID-19 public health measures in Alberta, Canada, where I live. These show resolutely individualistic attitudes toward health and a desire to understand the pandemic as a one-off aberration. I then suggest four ways that the work of bioethics needs to change.

Does the Presence of Asbestos-Containing Materials in Buildings Post-construction and Before Demolition Have an Impact on the Exposure to Occupants in Non-occupational Settings?

This narrative review aims to determine if asbestos-containing materials in buildings pose a hazard to building occupants in non-occupational settings. This paper is limited to the post-construction and pre-demolition stages of a building. The researchers selected 19 studies from the 126 studies screened, concerning exposure to asbestos fibers in non-occupational building settings, with a focus on post-construction and pre-demolition phases.

Development and Immature Mortality of the Sawtoothed Grain Beetle (Coleoptera: Silvanidae), on Different Sorghum Fractions and Different Temperatures.

Developmental ability of Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) was examined on six different sorghum milling fractions: Bran, Shorts, Cgrits, Fgrits, Red dogs, Flour, and also on a standard diet of Oat Flakes. For this purpose, a 1-day-old egg was placed in a vial containing 1 g of one of the sorghum fractions and exposed to three temperatures: 25, 30, or 32°C.

Immediate and delayed movement of resistant and susceptible adults of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) after short exposures to phosphine.

Background: During the last decade, the evaluation of certain behavioral attributes has been utilized as an indicator of resistance to phosphine. In this context, an underappreciated challenge may be the development of behavioral traits that are related with resistance to phosphine such as the movement to refugia and recovery of stored product insects after short exposures. Thus, the aim of the current study was to track the movement of phosphine-resistant and -susceptible adults of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), which is a major pest of stored products, after brief exposures to phosphine.

Exposure to cosmetic talc and mesothelioma.

Aim: Mesothelioma is associated with asbestos exposure. In this case series, we present 166 cases of individuals who had substantial asbestos exposure to cosmetic talc products as well as some who had potential or documented additional exposures to other asbestos-containing products and who subsequently developed mesothelioma.

Methods: Data were gathered for all subjects referred to an occupational and environmental medicine specialist as part of medicolegal review.

Human Health Risk Assessment due to Heavy Metals in Ground and Surface Water and Association of Diseases With Drinking Water Sources: A Study From Maharashtra, India.

Background: Contamination of freshwater sources can be caused by both anthropogenic and natural processes. According to Central Pollution Control Board, Maharashtra along with 2 other states, contribute 80% of hazardous waste generated in India, including heavy metal pollution. Hence, it is important to quantify heavy metal concentrations in drinking water sources in such areas.

The Twin Crises of Principles and Stories.

This symposium contribution argues that politicized responses to the COVID-19 pandemic mark the fracturing of the consensus that bioethics has been built upon. This consensus involved the mutual dependence of principles and stories: principles need stories to become applicable in clinical action, and stories need to reflect principles if they are to make generalized claims. Two mid-20th-century theorists, Erving Goffman and Walter Benjamin, each predicted the thinness of appeals to principles and to stories, respectively; their skepticism describes our moment.

Moral Distress in Deciding How Others Die.

This essay discusses how Susan Shapiro's Speaking for the Dying (2019) contributes to understanding surrogate decision-making in intensive care. Shapiro's ethnography is based on over two years of observing day-to-day decision-making by surrogates and family members who found themselves having to speak for loved ones who were no longer capable of expressing their own wishes for treatment or its termination. After summarizing Shapiro's specific findings-in particular what made no observable difference in decision-making, including advance directives-greater attention is given to how she acts as a witness to the emotional burden and distress that these decisions cause for both family members and professional staff.
