Background: Illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF) increases overdose mortality, but its role in infectious disease transmission is unknown. We examined whether IMF use predicts hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence among a cohort of people who inject drugs (PWID) in San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico.
Methods: PWID were recruited during 2020-2022, undergoing semi-annual interviewer-administered surveys and HIV and HCV serological rapid tests through 2024.

There are different tuberculosis diagnostic tools available that detect an antigen-specific immune response. The present study aims to evaluate the potential of cross-reactive responses of a CFP-10 and ESAT-6 antigen-based TB test using bioinformatics tools. The study found that the presence of the sequences coding for the CFP-10 and ESAT-6 antigens in mycobacterial genomes is not associated with their pathogenicity, and not even consistent within a single species among its strains, which can lead to either false positive or false negative test results.

Methods: We hypothesized that officers with more positive attitudes and practices would be more likely to report the perceived support of their supervisors. Data includes a sample of 1227 police officers who completed Project ESCUDO, a police education training program in Tijuana, Mexico.
Background: We evaluated the impact of a brief peer-led intervention on COVID-19 vaccination among people who inject drugs (PWID) presenting at syringe services program (SSP) locations in San Diego County, California.
Methods: Between March and July 2022, PWID aged ≥18 years without recent voluntary COVID-19 testing who were not up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations received a single-session motivational interviewing intervention (LinkUP) or an attention-matched didactic control condition from trained peer counselors at SSP sites randomized by week. Following either 30-minute session, counselors offered referrals to local vaccination services.
Background: In North America, overdose rates have steeply risen over the past five years, largely due to the ubiquity of illicitly manufactured fentanyls in the drug supply. Drug checking services (DCS) represent a promising harm reduction strategy and characterizing experiences of use and interest among people who inject drugs (PWID) is a priority.
Methods: Between February-October 2022, PWID participating in a cohort study in San Diego, CA and Tijuana, Mexico completed structured surveys including questions about DCS, socio-demographics and substance use behaviors.
Background: People who inject drugs (PWID) have low rates of COVID-19 testing yet are vulnerable to severe disease. In partnership with a mobile syringe service program (SSP) in San Diego County, CA, we developed the evidence-, community-, and Social Cognitive Theory-informed "LinkUP" intervention (tailored education, motivational interviewing, problem-solving, and planning) to increase COVID-19 testing uptake among PWID.
Purpose: To assess preliminary efficacy of LinkUP in increasing PWID COVID-19 testing in a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT).
Introduction: Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is a rare disease characterized by central alveolar hypoventilation and impaired autonomic regulation, caused by pathogenic variants of gene. More than 90% of patients have a polyalanine repeat mutation (PARM) in the heterozygous state, characterized by the expansion of GCN repeats and an increase in the number of alanine repeats, so that genotypes 20/24-20/33 are formed (the normal genotype is 20/20). The remaining 10% of patients harbor non-PARMs.

Methods: Participants aged ≥18 years who injected drugs ≤1 month ago were recruited into a community-based cohort from October 2020 to September 2021 in San Diego, California Poisson regression identified correlates of having had ≥1 COVID-19 vaccine dose based on semi-annual follow-up interviews through March 15, 2022.
Results: Of 360 participants, 74.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 prevalence is elevated among people who inject drugs (PWID). In Tijuana, Mexico, COVID-19 vaccines became available to the general population in June 2021, but uptake among PWID was <10%. We studied COVID-19 vaccine uptake among PWID in Tijuana following implementation of a pop-up vaccination clinic.

We partnered with a local, community-based syringe service program (SSP) in San Diego County, CA, to develop the single-session theory- and evidence-informed "LinkUP" intervention to increase COVID-19 testing and vaccination. This paper details the protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the LinkUP intervention.

Rapid-onset obesity, hypoventilation, hypothalamus dysfunction, and autonomic dysregulation (ROHHAD) syndrome is a disease of unknown etiology with a progressive course and unclear outcomes. The etiology of ROHHAD syndrome includes genetic, epigenetic, paraneoplastic, and immune-mediated theories, but to our knowledge, viral-associated cases of the disease have not been described yet.

Background: Surgical site infections (SSI), bleeding, and necrosis are possible complications of dermatological surgery, and their rates are well described for Mohs surgery (same-day surgery). However, there are only limited data on their occurrence in microscopically controlled surgery of the form in which it is practiced in German hospitals (next-day surgery).
Materials And Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patient records of patients hospitalized for microscopically controlled surgery during the year 2017 (12 months) in the Department of Dermatology and Allergology at the University Hospital of the RWTH Aachen (Aachen, Germany).
The data on the risk of surgical site infections (SSI) after skin surgery in patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatment are limited and the results of the existing single-center studies are controversial. At the same time, perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) for immunocompromised patients seems to be overused. We performed a retrospective analysis of the SSI rates after extensive dermatosurgical procedures performed from January 2017 to December 2017 in patients with impaired immune status due to a hematological disorder or immunosuppressive treatment at two German dermatosurgical centers.

Methods: Tijuana police officers (N = 1788) received NSI training (2015 to 2016). STIC score incorporates five self-reported behaviors: syringe confiscation, transportation, breaking, discarding, and arrest for syringe possession.
Rural IoT sensor networks, prevalent in environmental monitoring and precision agriculture, commonly operate over some variant of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard.

Drug control tactics, such as syringe confiscation and drug-related arrests, also cascade into health harms among people who use drugs. The role of police officer characteristics in shaping such enforcement and measures to reform police practices remains underexamined.
