Successful Management of Thyrocervical Trunk Aneurysm Ruptured into the Thoracic Cavity After Cesarean Section in Nonstable Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type I.

Rupture of the thyrocervical trunk aneurysm into the thoracic cavity does not occur very often. It is an urgent condition due to hemorrhagic shock by massive hemothorax with potentially fatal consequences. Pregnancy and puerperium are additional risk factors for a rupture of the thyrocervical trunk aneurysm in patients with neurofibromatosis and aneurysms.

Synthesis, characterization, biomolecular interactions, molecular docking, and in vitro and in vivo anticancer activities of novel ruthenium(III) Schiff base complexes.

In order to discover new anticancer drugs, novel ruthenium(III) complexes [Ru(L)Cl(HO)], where L is tetradentate Schiff base bis(acetylacetone)ethylendiimine (acacen, 1), bis(benzoylacetone)ethylendiimine (bzacen, 2), (acetylacetone)(benzoylaceton)ethylendiimine (acacbzacen, 3), bis(acetylacetone)propylendiimine (acacpn, 4), bis(benzoylacetone)propylendiimine (bzacpn, 5) or (acetylacetone)(benzoylaceton)propylendiimine (acacbzacpn, 6), were synthesized. The complexes 1 - 6 were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductometry, and by various spectroscopic techniques, such as UV-Vis, IR, EPR, and ESI-MS. Based on in vitro DNA/BSA experiments, complexes 2 (bzacen) and 5 (bzacpn) with two aromatic rings showed the highest DNA/BSA-activity, suggesting that the presence of the aromatic ring on the tetradentate Schiff base ligand contributes to increased activity.

Downregulation of LKB1/AMPK Signaling in Blood Mononuclear Cells Is Associated with the Severity of Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an intracellular energy sensor that regulates metabolic and immune functions mainly through the inhibition of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR)-dependent anabolic pathways and the activation of catabolic processes such as autophagy. The AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway and autophagy markers were analyzed by immunoblotting in blood mononuclear cells of 20 healthy control subjects and 23 patients with an acute demyelinating form of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). The activation of the liver kinase B1 (LKB1)/AMPK/Raptor signaling axis was significantly reduced in GBS compared to control subjects.

Responsiveness of 2 Different Ability Outcome Measures in Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

Background: The most frequently used ability outcome measure in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the GBS disability scale (GDS). Recently developed inflammatory Rasch-built overall disability (I-RODS) scale has been suggested to be used in inflammatory polyneuropathies. In the present study, we wanted to assess the comparative responsiveness of I-RODS and GDS in subjects who were diagnosed with GBS during a follow-up period of 6 months.

Non-convulsive status epilepticus as an initial manifestation of herpes simplex virus encephalitis.

Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSVE), manifesting with non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE), normocellular CSF findings and CT features of acute ischemic stroke, is a rare finding that can be hard to diagnose accurately. We present a case of HSVE and compare our results to those of previously published cases with the same pathology, in order to provide information to support more rapid and effective diagnosis and treatment. A Pubmed search of reported cases was conducted and five cases of HSVE manifesting with NCSE were found.

Change in Radiation Sterilization Process from Gamma Ray to X-ray.

The terminal sterilization of sterile orthopedic implants is a key process that, in addition to providing sterility, changes the material properties of the product and packaging. These changes might be observed during functionality testing and/or biological evaluation. We are establishing an additional sterilization process that appears promising from both a technical and business perspective.

COVID-19 represents one of the greatest challenges in modern history. Its impact is most noticeable in the health care system, mostly due to the accelerated and increased influx of patients with a more severe clinical picture. These facts are increasing the pressure on health systems.

Self-reported autonomic dysfunction in a recovery phase of Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Objective: Autonomic dysfunction occurs in approximately two-thirds of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) patients in the acute phase of the disease. Although improving over time, subclinical autonomic involvement may be present for 3-8 years after the GBS episode. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of self-reported autonomic disorders in GBS patients three and six months after disease onset compared to healthy controls (HCs).

Incidence and mortality rates of Guillain-Barré syndrome in Serbia.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute auto-immune polyradiculoneuropathy. A huge variety of GBS incidence and mortality rates has been noted across the world. The objective of the present multi-centric study was to assess the incidence and mortality rates of GBS during a 10-year period in Serbia.

Rate of progression of Guillain-Barré syndrome is not associated with the short-term outcome of the disease.

Introduction: There are no many data on association between progression rate of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and disease outcome.

Aim: The aim of our study was to analyze short-term outcome of GBS in relation to the rate of disease progression.

Methods: Our retrospective study included patients diagnosed with GBS in seven tertiary healthcare centers from 2009 to 2014.

Disability and quality of life in Guillain-Barré syndrome - Longitudinal study.

Longitudinal health-related quality of life (QoL) data in Guillain-Barré (GBS) patients are still scarce. We, therefore, investigated health- related QoL in GBS patients from Serbia and surrounding countries during a six-month follow-up period, and analyzed its association with patients' disability. Our study comprised 74 adult patients diagnosed with GBS from May 2017 until May 2018 in seven tertiary healthcare centers.

Dynamical stability of the weakly nonharmonic propeller-shaped planar Brownian rotator.

Dynamical stability is a prerequisite for control and functioning of desired nanomachines. We utilize the Caldeira-Leggett master equation to investigate dynamical stability of molecular cogwheels modeled as a rigid, propeller-shaped planar rotator. To match certain expected realistic physical situations, we consider a weakly nonharmonic external potential for the rotator.

Six-month prospective study of quality of life in Guillain-Barre syndrome.

In vitro and in vivo anti-tumor effects of selected platinum(IV) and dinuclear platinum(II) complexes against lung cancer cells.

In the present study, cytotoxic effects of cisplatin, the most usually used chemotherapeutic agent, were compared with new designed platinum(IV) ([PtCl(en)] (en = ethylenediamine) and [PtCl(dach)]) (dach = (±)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane) and platinum(II) complexes ([{trans-Pt(NH)Cl}(μ-pyrazine)](ClO) (Pt1), [{trans-Pt(NH)Cl}(μ-4,4'-bipyridyl)](ClO)DMF(Pt2),[{trans-Pt(NH)Cl}(μ-1,2-bis(4pyridyl)ethane)](ClO) (Pt3)), in vitro and in vivo against human and murine lung cancer cells, to determine anti-tumor potential of newly synthesized platinum-based drugs in the therapy of lung cancer. Results obtained by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide], Lactate dehydrogenase and Annexin V/Propidium Iodide assays showed that, among all tested complexes, [PtCl(en)] had the highest cytotoxicity against human and murine lung carcinoma cells in vitro. [PtCl(en)] showed significantly higher cytotoxicity then cisplatin in all tested concentrations, mainly by inducing apoptosis in lung cancer cells.

Dynamical emergence of Markovianity in local time scheme.

Recently we pointed out the so-called local time scheme as a novel approach to quantum foundations that solves the preferred pointer-basis problem. In this paper, we introduce and analyse in depth a rather non-standard dynamical map that is imposed by the scheme. On the one hand, the map does not allow for introducing a properly defined generator of the evolution nor does it represent a quantum channel.

Sternum resection and chest wall reconstruction with metaacrilate implant in tuberculosis.

We report a case of successful sternum and ribs/cartilage resection and chest wall reconstruction with a methacrylate implant produced using a three-dimensional model in a patient with a tuberculotic mass in this region. Clinical and radiologic follow-up 2 years after surgery showed excellent cosmetic and functional outcome.

Cytotoxicity of gold(III) complexes on A549 human lung carcinoma epithelial cell line.

We have studied the kinetics of the complex formation of gold(III) complexes, [Au(en)Cl2]+ (dichlorido( ethylendiamine)aurate(III)-ion) [Au(dach)Cl2] (dichloride(1,2-diaminocyclohexane)aurate(III)-ion) and [Au(bipy)Cl2]+ (dichlorido(2,2'-bipyridyl)aurate(III)-ion) with guanosine5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP). It was shown that 5'-GMP have a high affinity for gold(III) complex, which may have important biological implications, since the interactions of Au(III) with DNA are thought to be responsible for the anti-tumor activity. The [Au(bipy)Cl2]+ complex is more reactive than [Au(en)Cl2]+ or [Au(dach)Cl2]+.

Tissue Necrosis of Sour Cherry Fruits, An Unusual Disease Occurrence Caused by a Phoma sp. in Serbia.

Following frequent rains during May and June of 1999, a high incidence of an unknown disease on sour cherry (Prunus cerasus) fruits was observed in western Serbia (Šabac). Initially, small, water-soaked, dark green spots appeared on the fruit tissue similar to infections caused by Pseudomonas syringae or a Colletotrichum sp. (1,2).

In Yugoslavia, Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris was isolated from forage kale in 1964 and cabbage in 1997 (1). Recently, the incidence and severity of black rot symptoms on cabbage, cauliflower, and kale have increased.
