Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to estimate growth curves and genetic parameters for Nellore cattle in the Pantanal region of Brazil using random regression methodology on a large dataset of calf weights.
  • The research considered various fixed effects, including sex, year of birth, and environmental factors, and showed that calves from the dry season had higher average weights compared to those from other seasons.
  • Results revealed high direct heritability estimates for growth traits (0.35 to 0.75) and low maternal heritability estimates (0.03 to 0.08), suggesting that the random regression approach can help improve selective breeding strategies for future generations.

Microcystins (MCs) are a class of toxic secondary metabolites produced by some cyanobacteria strains that endanger aquatic and terrestrial organisms in various freshwater systems. Although patterns in MC occurrence are being recognized, divergences in the global data still hamper our ability to predict the toxicity of cyanobacterial blooms. This study aimed (i) to determine the dynamics of MCs and other cyanopeptides in a tropical reservoir, (ii) to investigate the correlation between peptides and potential cyanotoxin producers (iii) identifying the possible abiotic factors that influence the peptides.

The presence of dysmorphic neurons with strong cytoplasmatic accumulation of heavy non-phosphorylated neurofilament is crucial for the diagnostics of focal cortical dysplasia type II (FCDII). While ILAE's classification describes neocortical dysplasias, some groups have reported patients with mesial t abnormal neurons in the hippocampus of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Here we report a patient with such abnormal neurons in the hippocampus and compared it with previous reports of hippocampal dysplasia.

Background: In 2019, a highly pathogenic coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) surfaced and resulted in the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). With the aim of finding effective drugs to fight against the disease, several trials have been conducted since COVID-19 can only be considered a treatable disease, from a clinical point of view, after the availability of specific and effective antivirals. AZVUDINE (FNC), initially developed for treating HIV, is a potential treatment for COVID-19 as it has the capability to lower the patient's viral load and promote recovery.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs) are a global environmental concern that encompasses public health issues, water availability, and water quality owing to the production of various secondary metabolites (SMs), including cyanotoxins in freshwater, brackish water, and marine ecosystems. The frequency, extent, magnitude, and duration of CHABs are increasing globally. Cyanobacterial species traits and changing environmental conditions, including anthropogenic pressure, eutrophication, and global climate change, together allow cyanobacteria to thrive.

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has threatened the human population globally as the numbers of reinfection cases even after large-scale vaccination. Trials have been carried out to find drugs effective in fighting the disease, as COVID-19 is being considered a treatable disease only after we have antivirals. A clinical candidate originally developed for HIV treatment, AZVUDINE (FNC), is a promising drug in the treatment of COVID-19.

The secretory structures of Alismataceae have been described as secretory ducts, laticifer ducts, laticifer canals or schizogenous ducts. However, these terms are not found in the specialized literature, and ontogenetic analyses for the exact classification of these structures are missing. Accordingly, more studies regarding the secretory structures of Alismataceae are necessary to establish homology in the family or in the order.
