The selection and expression of conspicuous colorations in animals is often related to anti-predation strategies and sociosexual communication. The giant river prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man, 1879) is a species with three male morphotypes that vary in claws' coloration and the size of the animals. It has been suggested that male reproductive quality might be associated to their coloration, but evidence is still conflicting.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) circulates in a sylvatic cycle between non-human primates (NHPs) and arboreal mosquitoes in Brazil. Passive monitoring of ill or deceased NHPs is a key component of the Brazilian yellow fever (YF) surveillance program. Samples from NHPs carcasses are usually suitable for molecular tests but not for serological assays.

Background: The rapid spread and increase of chikungunya (CHIKV) and dengue (DENV) cases in Brazilian regions in 2023 has raised concerns about the impact of arboviruses on public health. Epidemiological and genomic surveillance was performed to estimate the introduction and spread of CHIKV and DENV in Brazil.

Methods: This study obtained results from the Hermes Pardini (HP), a private medical laboratory, and the Health Department of Minas Gerais state (SES-MG).

Background: If identifying target species is challenging regarding chemical speciation, non-target species present even more significant difficulties. Thus, to improve the performance of the methods, multimodal online coupling involving atomic and molecular mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS-ESI-HRMS) is an advance in this direction. Then, this kind of coupling is highlighted in this Tutorial Review, as well as some references emphasizing its potentialities and possible limitations.

Background: Metal ions perform important functions in the body and their concentrations in cells and tissues are tightly controlled. Alterations in metal homeostasis can occur in certain disease states including infection. In this study urinary excretion of several metals including calcium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel, selenium, and zinc in Covid-19 patients (n=35) and control (n=60) individuals, spanning ages and sexes.

Article Synopsis
  • Migraine affects 15.2% of the global population, is a leading cause of disability, especially among women, and remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in many cases.
  • The condition displays both common and individual characteristics, with a varied presentation in symptoms, frequency, and response to treatments, influenced by genetic factors.
  • Education on migraine management is crucial for improving daily life for patients and reducing the number of individuals needing specialized care, allowing specialists to focus on more complex cases.

Article Synopsis
  • - Brazil experienced significant COVID-19 impact, highlighted by high death tolls and four main peaks of cases, with the last two waves driven by the emergence of the Omicron variant and its sublineages BA.1, BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5.
  • - A study analyzed virus samples from 15 health units in Minas Gerais, revealing that BA.1 and BA.2 were most common in the third wave, while BA.4 and BA.5 dominated the fourth.
  • - Findings indicate that vaccination, especially booster doses, played a crucial role in reducing deaths, and the study confirmed the introduction of Omicron subvariants through multiple international cases with continued local transmission.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for the detection of retinoblastoma (RB) by fundus image analysis have been proposed as a potentially effective technique to facilitate diagnosis and screening programs. However, doubts remain about the accuracy of the technique, the best type of AI for this situation, and its feasibility for everyday use. Therefore, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate this issue.

Sample preparation in an analytical sequence increases the number of errors, is highly time-consuming, and involves the manipulation of hazardous reagents. Therefore, when an improvement in an analytical method is required, the sample preparation step needs to be optimised or redesigned. Moreover, this step can involve significant toxic reagents and a high volume of waste.

Objectives: Verify whether hypervigilance to pain (HP) and sleep quality (SQ) are confounding variables in the infrared thermography (IT) examination of the temporomandibular joint and temporal and masseter muscles.

Methods: A cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted, collecting HP and SQ data from 80 participants without temporomandibular disorders (TMD), performing their IT and another 40 participants with TMD. For the selection of participants with and without TMD, the TMD Pain Screener questionnaire and axis I of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders were applied.

Purpose: Pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP) is the mainstay of treatment for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), reducing the risk of severe vision loss. Pain poses a potential obstacle to effective laser delivery and patient compliance. Therefore, implementing pain relief strategies can enhance both treatment efficacy and patient comfort.

We enrolled 21 patients with laboratory-confirmed yellow fever (YF), hospitalized at Eduardo de Menezes Hospital, Brazil, to be treated with sofosbuvir, a drug approved for hepatitis C. Given the absence of specific YF antiviral treatments, the off-label nonrandomized sofosbuvir treatment aimed to address high disease severity and the risk of fatal outcomes. Patients received a daily dose of 400 mg sofosbuvir from 4 to 10 days post-symptom onset.

Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) has long been considered an endemic disease in the northern and northeastern regions of Brazil, while the southern region remains non-endemic. However, in recent years, several cases of CVL have been reported in southern states. The objective of this work was to determine the seroprevalence of CVL in dogs in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, through immunochromatographic tests (DPP®) and ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) and its correlation with environmental characteristics through georeferencing.

Identifying plantation lines in aerial images of agricultural landscapes is re-quired for many automatic farming processes. Deep learning-based networks are among the most prominent methods to learn such patterns and extract this type of information from diverse imagery conditions. However, even state-of-the-art methods may stumble in complex plantation patterns.

Unlabelled: The monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak, primarily endemic to Africa, has spread globally, with Brazil reporting the second-highest number of cases. The emergence of MPXV in non-endemic areas has raised concerns, particularly due to the co-circulation of other exanthematous viruses such as varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and molluscum contagiosum virus (MOCV). To perform an accurate differential diagnosis of MPXV during the ongoing outbreak in Minas Gerais, Brazil, a 5PLEX qPCR assay targeting orthopoxviruses (OPV), VZV, and MOCV was used to retrospectively analyze all clinical samples that tested negative for MPXV in the initial screening conducted at Funed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver nitrate (AgNO) impact metabolite production in transgenic soybean plants using NMR-based metabolomics.
  • Three treatments were utilized: a control with water, one with AgNPs, and another with AgNO, analyzing physiological and anatomical changes.
  • Findings indicated that silver applications did not significantly alter secondary metabolite production, with PCA differentiating treatments primarily based on fatty acids and other specific compounds.

Carbon nanotubes are promising materials for biomedical applications like delivery systems and tissue scaffolds. In this paper, magnetic carbon nanotubes (M-CNTs) covered with bovine serum albumin (M-CNTs-BSA) or functionalized with hydrophilic monomers (M-CNTs-HL) were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated concerning their interaction with Caco-2 cells. There is no comparison between these two types of functionalization, and this study aimed to verify their influence on the material's interaction with the cells.
