Laccases that oxidize low-density polyethylene (LDPE) represent a promising strategy for bioremediation purposes. To rationalize or optimize their PE-oxidative activity, two fundamental factors must be considered: the enzyme's redox potential and its binding affinity/mode towards LDPE. Indeed, a stable laccase-PE complex may facilitate a thermodynamically unfavorable electron transfer, even without redox mediators.

Glucose transporter type 1 deficiency syndrome (GLUT1-DS) is an uncommon condition represented by an infantile-onset disorder, frequently arising from heterozygous mutations in the gene. Individuals with GLUT1-DS may present with early-onset seizures (typically manifesting before 4 years of age), developmental delay, and complex movement disorders. In fewer cases, stroke-like events or hemiplegic migraine-like symptoms are also reported, defined by unilateral paresis affecting 1 side of the body and/or one-half of the face, occasionally accompanied by speech impairment.

Thyroxine, the main hormone product of the thyroid, is produced at multiple sites within its protein precursor thyroglobulin. Each site consists of two tyrosine residues which undergo iodination and coupling, resulting in the synthesis of thyroxine at the acceptor tyrosine, where the hormone synthesis is later completed by proteolysis. Within the structurally resolved sites, the role of an essential conserved acidic residue preceding the acceptor remains elusive.

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebellar heterotopia (CH) is a rare brain abnormality with limited research, often seen alongside other cerebellar issues and syndromes, particularly in pediatric patients.
  • This study analyzed a group of 32 children diagnosed with CH, categorizing them into those with isolated CH or cerebellar malformations and those with CH plus cerebral malformations.
  • Findings revealed specific brain imaging patterns for CH and identified a link between certain genetic factors and developmental issues, with many affected children experiencing language delays and motor difficulties.

Purpose: The treatment of renal tumors is dictated by the results acquired from renal imaging, which play a crucial role in determining the appropriate strategy and surgical plan. Radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, and cryoablation are established percutaneous thermal ablation procedures that have widespread recognition. The objective of this scholarly article is to present a comprehensive summary of the application of the primary thermal protection strategies of the structures adjacent to renal tumors, in particular the effectiveness in terms of safety of hydrodissection and pyeloperfusion, in the context of percutaneous thermal ablation for renal tumors.

Several mammalian genes have originated from the domestication of retrotransposons, selfish mobile elements related to retroviruses. Some of the proteins encoded by these genes have maintained virus-like features; including self-processing, capsid structure formation, and the generation of different isoforms through -1 programmed ribosomal frameshifting. Using quantitative approaches in molecular evolution and biophysical analyses, we studied 28 retrotransposon-derived genes, with a focus on the evolution of virus-like features.

Background: An intronic deletion within intron 2 of the DCDC2 gene encompassing the entire READ1 (hereafter, READ1d) has been associated in both children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and typical readers (TRs), with interindividual variation in reading performance and motion perception as well as with structural and functional brain alterations. Visual motion perception -- specifically processed by the magnocellular (M) stream -- has been reported to be a solid and reliable endophenotype of DD. Hence, we predicted that READ1d should affect neural activations in brain regions sensitive to M stream demands as reading proficiency changes.

Purpose: To describe fetal brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings in a large series of monochorionic (MC) pregnancies complicated by Twin Anemia-Polycythemia Sequence (TAPS) prenatally diagnosed, so to characterize the potential intracranial complications associated with this condition, their frequency and potential treatment options.

Methods: This is a retrospective study of MC twin pregnancies complicated by TAPS and undergone fetal MRI in a single institution from 2006 to 2023. MRI control was performed and post-natal ultrasound (US) or MRI were available.

Background: The prognostic relevance of fetal/early postnatal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) isolated "minor" lesions in congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is still unclear, because of the heterogeneity of previously reported case series. The aim of this study was to report the imaging and long-term clinical follow-up data on a relatively large cohort of infected fetuses.

Methods: Among 140 CMV-infected fetuses from a single-center 12-year-long fetal MRI database, cases that showed isolated "minor" lesions at MRI, mainly represented by polar temporal lesions, were selected.

Aim: Many adolescents with T1D experience a decline in metabolic control due to erratic eating habits and subpar adherence to treatment regimens. The objective of our retrospective observational study was to assess the effect of the Tandem Control IQ (CIQ) advanced hybrid closed-loop (AHCL) system on a cohort of adolescents with suboptimal glucose control.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 20 non-adherent patients with T1D, who were inconsistently using Multiple Daily Injections (MDIs) and flash glucose monitoring and were subsequently started and on CIQ.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the short-term effectiveness of guselkumab in treating patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) who showed signs of axial involvement over a period of 4 months.
  • A total of 67 patients were monitored, and significant improvements were noted in various health assessments (BASDAI, ASDAS, DAPSA), with over half achieving a BASDAI score of 4 or lower.
  • MRI assessments indicated that most patients also showed improvement in sacroiliac joint lesions, and while minor side effects were reported, no serious adverse reactions were noted, suggesting guselkumab's potential clinical use in these patients.

Background: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disease in which lack of the dystrophin protein causes progressive muscular weakness, cardiomyopathy and respiratory insufficiency. DMD is often associated with other cognitive and behavioral impairments, however the correlation of abnormal dystrophin expression in the central nervous system with brain structure and functioning remains still unclear.

Objective: To investigate brain involvement in patients with DMD through a multimodal and multivariate approach accounting for potential comorbidities.

  • The study focuses on optimizing diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) acquisition protocols to analyze tissue microstructure effectively in a clinical setting.
  • Eleven healthy subjects participated in an extensive protocol that tested various DWI models, including DTI and NODDI, assessing data collection time and parameter estimation.
  • The findings indicate that the optimized acquisition scheme reduces the time needed from 35 minutes to 14 minutes without compromising the quality of the data, allowing for effective analysis of multiple models within a shorter timeframe.

The salt [K(18-crown-6)][Ru(CN)(CO)] ([K(18-crown-6)][]) was generated by the reaction of Ru(CH)(CO) with [K(18-crown-6)]CN. An initial thermal reaction gives [Ru(CN)(CO)], which, upon ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, reacts with a second equiv of CN. Protonation of [] gave [HRu(CN)(CO)] ([H]), which was isolated as a single isomer with mutually trans cyanide ligands.

Flavodoxins are enzymes that contain the redox-active flavin mononucleotide (FMN) cofactor and play a crucial role in numerous biological processes, including energy conversion and electron transfer. Since the redox characteristics of flavodoxins are significantly impacted by the molecular environment of the FMN cofactor, the evaluation of the interplay between the redox properties of the flavin cofactor and its molecular surroundings in flavoproteins is a critical area of investigation for both fundamental research and technological advancements, as the electrochemical tuning of flavoproteins is necessary for optimal interaction with redox acceptor or donor molecules. In order to facilitate the rational design of biomolecular devices, it is imperative to have access to computational tools that can accurately predict the redox potential of both natural and artificial flavoproteins.
