LIMP II, a type II lysosomal integral membrane protein, and the CD36/LIMP II construct are targeted to lysosomes by means of a signal expressed in the tyrosine-lacking carboxyl cytoplasmic tail of LIMP II (Vega, M. A., Rodriguez, F.

The ability of human sperm to evade local humoral immune response at the female genital tract has received little attention. As some microorganisms inactivate secretory immunoglobulin A (S-IgA) by enzymatic degradation as a part of their pathogenic mechanism, we decided to test the hypothesis that there is an IgA protease in human semen that helps sperm to progress through the cervix uteri. Incubation of different semen fractions in the presence of S-IgA revealed IgA protease activity associated with raw semen or sperm but not with seminal plasma; raw semen and sperm produced two split products of 66 kDa and 45 kDa, respectively, in SDS-PAGE.

Screening of donor blood for hepatitis B led to recognition that most cases of post-transfusion hepatitis were due to an agent known as non-A, non-B. Until recently the causative agent for non-A, non-B hepatitis was identified, being denominated hepatitis C virus. It is estimated that one-half of patient with hepatitis C develop chronic liver disease, and 20% of this will develop cirrhosis.

Intense and persistent use of DDT for malaria control has increased resistance and induced exophilic behavior of Anopheles pseudopunctipennis. An evaluation of bendiocarb and DDT to control this species in Sinaloa, Mexico, showed that, in spite of DDT-resistance, both insecticides produced similar effects. Feeding patterns were analyzed to explain these results.

In vitro mutagenesis of rplB was used to generate changes in a conserved region of Escherichia coli ribosomal protein L2 between Gly221 and His231. Mutants were selected by temperature sensitivity using an inducible expression system. A mutant L2 protein with the deletion of Thr222 to Asp228 was readily distinguishable from wild-type L2 by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and ribosomes from the strain overexpressing this mutant protein were characterized by sucrose density gradient centrifugation and protein composition.

The increasing incidence of penicillinase producing Neissreria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) and chromosomally-mediated resistant N. gonorrhoeae (CMRNG) has generated a need for therapy other than penicillin. PPNG constitutes about 30% of the circulating strains of gonococci in the high risk population in Mexico City.
