Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic precancerous disorder of the oral mucosa caused by chewing of areca nut and its other variants. Chewing of areca nuts leads to dysregulated expression of specific genes, leading to various premalignant or malignant disorders. This study aimed to determine the differential expression of the diagnostic genes (MYH6, TNNT3, MYL1, and TPM2) in healthy controls and OSMF patients using saliva and tissue samples, determining the histopathological grade of the clinical samples.

  • A study evaluated smartphone apps targeting smokeless tobacco (SLT) cessation to determine their technical quality and adherence to established guidelines.
  • The researchers conducted a systematic search for SLT cessation apps on the Google PlayStore, finding that only three apps were relevant, but none were of high quality or based on credible evidence.
  • Results showed that the apps only partially complied with tobacco cessation guidelines set by organizations like India's National Tobacco Control Program and the UK's NICE.

Background: There is an urgent need to update the evidence available on the efficacy of photobiomodulation (PBM) in comparison to topical corticosteroids in the management of Oral Lichen Planus (OLP).

Methods: Cochrane Oral Health's Trials Register, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials in the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE Pubmed, SCOPUS, Lilacs and Google Scholar were searched. Other sources included US National Institutes of Health Ongoing Trials Register, World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform and Clinical Trial Registry - India were searched using variations of the keywords "Laser" and "Oral Lichen Planus".

Background: Tobacco consumption causes altered immune and inflammatory responses which lead to various respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders. Studies have only confirmed the harmful effects of tobacco consumption on the severity of COVID-19. The present study aimed to explore the association between tobacco consumption and the initiation of COVID-19.

Oxidative stress is a recognized factor that poses a significant risk for the development of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) and Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF), as it leads to the generation of Reactive Oxygen Species. In recent years, there has been significant research on the enzymes MDA (malondialdehyde) and SOD (superoxide dismutase), investigating their potential role in the development of OPMD and OSCC. These enzymes have emerged as promising biomarkers due to their ability to provide a less invasive, cost-effective, and objective diagnostic method.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral malignant and potentially malignant conditions impact many people globally, and early diagnosis is crucial for effective prevention and treatment.
  • * Vibrational spectroscopy techniques like Raman spectroscopy (RS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are being researched for their ability to non-invasively diagnose these conditions.
  • * A systematic review found high pooled sensitivity (0.99) and specificity (0.94) for RS and FTIR, indicating their significant potential for early detection of oral cancers.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a frequently seen oral ulcerative lesion, manifesting as multiple, recurrent, shallow, irregular ulcers encircled by an erythematous halo. The precise etiopathogenesis is obscure, although the recent understanding suggests an underlying immune-mediated etiology. However, there is no defined management protocol and the principal therapy aims to attain symptomatic respite.

  • A femoral neck fracture is a frequent injury in the elderly but rare in young adults, where implant choice is crucial for treatment.
  • This systematic review compared femoral neck system (FNS) versus cannulated cancellous (CC) screws for fixing these fractures in young adults, analyzing data from six retrospective cohort studies with 427 patients.
  • Results showed that FNS had shorter healing time, improved operation duration, and better Harris hip scores, while CC screws led to less intraoperative blood loss, suggesting FNS is generally more effective for this injury.

  • Periarthritis, or frozen shoulder, is a condition affecting over 2-5% of adults aged 40-60, causing stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint with treatment options ranging from physiotherapy to surgical intervention.
  • A study compared the effectiveness of intra-articular injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) versus triamcinolone in treating periarthritis in 60 patients from eastern India, measuring outcomes via visual analog scale (VAS) for pain and DASH score for function.
  • Results showed that the PRP group had significantly lower pain (mean VAS score of 14.33) and better function (mean DASH score of 18.08) at 24 weeks compared to the triamcinolone group

  • Nutrient canals (NCs) are pathways in the jaw that contain blood vessels and nerves and can indicate health issues when visible in dental X-rays.
  • A study involving 200 patients focused on the prevalence of NCs in those with diabetes, hypertension, and chronic periodontitis, finding higher frequencies of NCs among these groups.
  • The research suggests that NC presence can serve as a useful preliminary screening tool for detecting systemic diseases, even though it showed no significant correlation with age or gender.
