A clinical pain syndrome similar to "carotidynia" developed in a patient several years after undergoing carotid endarterectomy. The pain was reversed by superior laryngeal nerve block, followed by superior larnygeal neurectomy. A diagnosis of superior laryngeal neuralgia was suggested by several characteristic features: (1) pain along the anterior cervical triangle, with extension to the ipsilateral ear and eye, (2) hoarseness, and (3) paralysis of the ipsilateral cricothyroid muscle on laryngoscopy.

A specialized transducing phage, SP beta c2 dglnA2, of Bacillus subtilis was used to construct partial diploids with various glutamine auxotrophs. The overproduction of manganese-stimulated glutamine synthetase no longer occurred in the diploids. The kinetics of heat inactivation of the enzyme extracted from two diploids suggests that there was subunit mixing.

Cell free extracts prepared from exponentially growing Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus as well as from Bacillus cereus at the end of exponential growth were optimized for various factors required for amino acid incorporation when programmed with Bacillus ribonucleic acid. All three preparations synthesized glutamine synthetase antigen when ribonucleic acid from a Bacillus subtilis strain that overproduces glutamine synthetase was added. The post exponential Bacillus cereus extract, however, was most active for the synthesis of Bacillus cereus sport coat antigen when supplemented with the appropriate ribonucleic acid.

Adductor spastic dysphonia may not be one disorder but a voice sign of several different neurologic and psychiatric syndromes. This study evaluates whether rhythmic voice arrests, often components of "spastic dysphonia," are signs of essential tremor, a neurologic disorder. Data on 22 patients originally diagnosed as having spastic dysphonia, who had tremor-like or rhythmic voice arrests, were compared with data on two groups of patients who had essential (voice) tremor.

After recurrent laryngeal nerve resection for adductor spastic dysphonia, the voices of 37 patients (ages 39 to 79 years) were assessed 24 hours, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year after surgery, and those of 33 patients up to 1 1/2 years after surgery. By 24 hours after surgery, 97% of patients had improved and 3% had failed; by 1 month, 97% were still improved while 3% had failed; by 6 months, 92% had maintained improvement while 8% had failed; by 1 year, 68% were still improved but 32% had failed; and by a 1 1/2 years, 61% were still improved while 39% had failed. The patients whose voices improved varied from one another in both type and degree of residual dysphonia.

Tongue force, rate of syllable repetition, and judgments of articulatory defectiveness were measures obtained on 19 dysarthric adults with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and on 125 normal adults. Anterior and lateral tongue forces were measured by means of a pressure transducer clasped between the teeth; the tongue forces were recorded on a pen-writing ECG apparatus. Audio-recorded syllable repetitions of /p lambda/, /t lambda/, and /k lambda/ also were transcribed on ECG paper and counted.

We studied the feasibility of adapting the method of Wood et al. (1971) for determining cerebral dominance for language and did not obtain consistent asymmetries of evoked responses in the left hemisphere to stop consonant task (SCT) as compared with fundamental frequency task (FFT). Likewise, the right hemisphere-evoked potentials for SCT and FFT did not show consistent asymmetries.

Ten normal adult right-handed subjects receive phonemic combinations (/epik/, /epak/, /a/, /pi/, /pa/) and pure tones (2500 and 8000 Hz) binaurally through matched earphones. Fifty responses from electrodes at P5, P6, C5, C6, F7 and F8 (referenced to linked mastoids) were summated, and evoked potentials from homologous areas were measured separately and superimposed in order to observe differences. Visual inspection of superimposed responses showed no consistent gross asymmetries that lateralized to either hemisphere.

The newer tetracyclines are defined as those tetracyclines available in the United States but not approved for veterinary use. These include demeclocycline, methacycline, doxycycline, and minocycline. Of these, doxycycline and minocycline appear to offer advantages that would render them useful in certain situations in veterinary medicine.

Spores of Bacillus cereus mutants selected for slow response to germinants and sensitivity to lysozyme were found to be deficient in coat, but were heat-resistant and contained the same quantity of dipicolinic acid as the wild-type. While the average coat protein content of the spores was 25% of the wild-type, many spores were coatless with large whorls of coat deposited in the cytoplasm. These coat deposits were isolated in Renografin gradients and found to cross-react immunologically with wild-type coat.

A patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus retinopathy showed resolution of subretinal edema documented with fluorescein angiography. Subsequently at autopsy, immunofluorescence studies disclosed ocular deposition of immunoglobulins in the vascular layer of choroid capillaries and basement membranes of ciliary processes and bulbar conjunctivas. To our knowledge, these findings represent the first reported documentation of probable immune-complex ocular vasculitis in lupus retinopathy using immunofluorescent techniques, and they support the hypothesis that lupus retinopathy is caused by immune complex deposition as are other manifestations of SLE.

Spastic dysphonia is a disorder of phonation that is usually markedly improved by surgical resection of one recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). In this study, biopsies of the RLN were obtained at surgery from nine patients with spastic dysphonia (disease group) and eight patients with laryngeal cancer (control group). The RLN was found to be composed of several nerve regions having characteristic fiber compositions.

In 10 female subjects, power-spectrum analysis was performed on the alpha activity elicted during the resting state, 4 right hemispheric tasks, and 3 left hemispheric tasks. The data were treated in 3 ways: approach 1, comparing the right and left hemispheric alpha activity; approach 2, comparing the right and left hemispheric alpha activity adjusted for the resting state; and approach 3, comparing the right and left hemispheric alpha activity adjusted for the previous task. Approaches 1 and 2 revealed few significant differences in the alpha activity of the hemispheres, but approach 3 provided data that better fit the theory of decreased power spectrum of attenuation of activity in the activated hemisphere.

About 70% of the protein in isolated Bacillus subtilis spore coats was solubilized by treatment with a combination of reducing and denaturing agents at alkaline pH. The residue, consisting primarily of protein, was insoluble in a variety of reagents. The soluble proteins were resolved into at least seven bands by sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis.

There is increasing evidence that, as in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), deposition of immune complexes plays a role in the pathogenesis of dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). Dermatitis herpetiformis and SLE were diagnosed in a 15-year-old girl with Marfan's syndrome who died of cardiac tamponade secondary to cystic medial necrosis of the ascending aorta. The concurrence of these diseases suggests that predisposition to immune-mediated disorders may be associated with the expression of multiple clinical entities.
