Use of high-pressure membranes is an effective means for removal of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that is less sensitive than adsorption processes to variable water quality and specific PFAS structure. This study evaluated the use of nanofiltration (NF) membranes for the removal of PFAS and industry relevant co-contaminants in semiconductor fabrication (fab) wastewater. Initial experiments using a flat sheet filtration cell determined that the NF90 (tight NF) membrane provided superior performance compared to the NF270 (loose NF) membrane, with NF90 rejection values exceeding 97 % for all PFAS evaluated, including the ultrashort trifluoromethane sulfonic acid (TFMS).

Here, we coined the term "clayene" for a single layer of clay and "few-layer clayene" for clays with 2-10 layers. Few-layer clayenes, which are Fe-rich and mica-type, were prepared hydrothermally at 200 °C and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) to determine the crystalline phases and morphology, respectively. Chemical composition by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the iron-rich mica composition, and the latter also revealed the presence of both Fe and Fe.

Iron-bearing clay minerals are ubiquitous in the environment, and the clay-Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox couple plays important roles in abiotic reduction of several classes of environmental contaminants. We investigated the role of Fe-bearing clay minerals on the bioreduction of nitrobenzene. In experiments with Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 and excess electron donor, we found that the Fe-bearing clay minerals montmorillonite SWy-2 and nontronite NAu-2 enhanced nitrobenzene bioreduction.
