Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), along with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), are rare, life-threatening delayed type IV hypersensitivity mucocutaneous skin disorders that can often be precipitated by medications. The most common culprits are sulfonamide antibiotics and various antiseizure medications. We report a case of a 41-year-old Black female that initially presented with SJS, which then rapidly progressed to TEN, confirmed by hematoxylin and eosin stain skin biopsies.

Background: Currently available clinical information regarding management of posterior uveal melanomas complicated by nodular extrascleral extension is inadequate to determine the role, if any, for plaque radiotherapy in such patients.

Methods: The authors performed a retrospective descriptive study of eight patients with a choroidal or ciliochoroidal melanoma complicated by nodular extrascleral extension who were treated by surgical excision of the extrascleral nodule followed immediately by plaque radiotherapy of the intraocular tumour. The calculated volume of the extrascleral nodule was greater than 1 mm3 but less than 1000 mm3 in all cases, and the intraocular tumour was deemed treatable by plaque radiotherapy in all patients.

The erbB2 receptor tyrosine kinase and the CD44 transmembrane glycoprotein interact with one another in numerous cell types. This interaction helps to maintain erbB2 activity that contributes to tumor progression. We investigated whether CD44 and erbB2 similarly interact in endometrial carcinomas in vitro and in situ.

Bilateral synchronous breast cancer appears to have a worse prognosis than comparable unilateral breast cancer. HER-2/neu expression in bilateral breast cancer has not been reported. The purpose of this study was to review the characteristics of patients with bilateral synchronous breast cancer and to report the incidence of HER-2/neu overexpression.

Background: A two-week elective clerkship in clinical oncology is offered to third-year medical students.

Methods: Two students at a time participated in the rotation and spent time with attendings in a one-to-one setting in outpatient clinics in the cancer specialties. The students also attended multidisciplinary tumor boards.

Background: Bilateral synchronous breast cancer is uncommon (accounting for 1.0%-2.6% of all patients with breast cancer), and most physicians do not accumulate a large personal experience of patients with this disease.

This is the first clinical case report of a thoracic invasive thymoma metastatic to the ovary with disease noted in the entire abdomen including the pelvis 5 1/2 years after initial diagnosis. The involved areas of metastases include the distal ileum, peritoneal and serosal surfaces (including the surface of the distal colon, bladder, and pelvis), and the surface of the right ovary. The patient survived 13 years after her initial diagnosis and 7 1/2 years after discovery of her metastases.

The safety of high-dose postoperative radiation therapy to a jejunal graft has not been established in the literature. The purpose of the present study is to review the effect of postoperative radiation on swallow function in patients who have received a jejunal interposition graft as part of their reconstruction after cancer resection. Charts of patients undergoing hypopharyngeal resections for cancers with placement of jejunal interposition grafts who received postoperative radiation therapy were reviewed.

Purpose: To compare sequential methotrexate (M) and fluorouracil (F) (M-->F) with surgery (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project [NSABP] B-13) and cyclophosphamide (C), M, and F with M-->F (NSABP B-19), in patients with estrogen receptor (ER)-negative tumors and negative axillary nodes.

Patients And Methods: A total of 760 patients were randomized to B-13; 1,095 patients with the same eligibility requirements were randomized to B-19. Disease-free survival (DFS), distant disease-free survival (DDFS), and survival were determined using life-table estimates.

Purpose: Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. Of the few reported series, most indicate a dismal prognosis. In this report, the clinical presentation, histopathologic criteria used for diagnosis, mode of treatment, and outcome are evaluated in seven patients with SNUC.

Over a 7-year period, 34 patients were treated at the Southern New Jersey Regional Trauma Center for forklift-related injuries, ranging from minor contusions to multiple organ-system trauma. Hospital and rehabilitation courses were prospectively evaluated, documenting long term impairment of function and disability. Patients injured by falling from forklifts generally had less severe injuries, requiring fewer surgical procedures, shorter hospital stays, and less overall disability, than patients who received crush-type (object-oriented) injuries.

Efficacy, predictability, and safety of excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy were evaluated at centers in Paris and Brest, France. Photoablation was performed with the VISX laser on 265 eyes (151 at the Paris center and 114 at the Brest center). The eyes were clinically and statistically evaluated over a six month follow-up.

Background: Preoperative radiation with sensitizing doxorubicin has been popularized in the treatment of high grade sarcoma of the extremity. A multiinstitutional experience with this protocol that was initiated by the Southeastern Cancer Study Group in 1984 and maintained in three institutions was updated by the authors.

Methods: Patients with biopsied sarcoma had intraarterial infusion with doxorubicin hydrochloride (Adriamycin) 30 mg/24 hrs x 3 days and were allocated by the institution to receive radiation 30-35 Gy in 10 fractions or 46 Gy in 23-25 fractions followed by resection.

From November 1983 to October 1992, 22 patients with invasive cervical cancer stage IB through stage IIIB with metastasis to para-aortic nodes were entered in this study. Five patients were excluded. Of 17 remaining evaluable patients, 5 (29%) were stage IB, 6 (35%) were stage IIB, and 6 (35%) were stage IIIB.

Twenty-two patients with invasive cervical cancer had ovarian transposition. Fifteen patients received whole pelvic external radiation therapy via a teletherapy unit, and nine patients also received one or two intracavitary insertions. Ovarian function was measured by serum gonadotropins, FSH, and LH.

The purpose of this retrospective study is to identify prostate cancer patients who would benefit from pelvic nodes irradiation (whole pelvis) as opposed to the small-field irradiation to the prostate only. Between 1975 and 1983, 126 patients were treated by whole pelvis (4,600-5,000 cGY) with prostate boost (2,000 cGY) radiation (WP + P). Median follow-up was six years and six months.
