The application of single-cell technologies in clinical nephrology remains elusive. We generated an atlas of transcriptionally defined cell types and cell states of human kidney disease by integrating single-cell signatures reported in the literature with newly generated signatures obtained from 5 patients with acute kidney injury. We used this information to develop kidney-specific cell-level information ExtractoR (K-CLIER), a transfer learning approach specifically tailored to evaluate the role of cell types/states on bulk RNAseq data.

Saving body water by optimal reabsorption of water filtered by the kidney leading to excretion of urine with concentrations of solutes largely above that of plasma allowed vertebrate species to leave the aquatic environment to live on solid ground. Filtered water is reabsorbed for 70% and 20% by proximal tubules and thin descending limbs of Henle, respectively. These two nephron segments express the water channel aquaporin-1 located along both apical and basolateral membranes.

"Noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features" (NIFTP) is a recent reclassification of the encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma, which is supposed to reflect its indolent clinical behavior and to prevent overtreatment of patients with this neoplasm. The diagnosis of NIFTP can only be made histologically on the surgical specimen according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, which requires the examination of the whole nodule and its capsule. Spindle cell proliferations, especially of follicular cell origin, arising within thyroid follicular neoplasms are very rare and may cause diagnostic difficulties.

The new JET ITER-like wall (made of beryllium and tungsten) is more fragile than the former carbon fiber composite wall and requires active protection to prevent excessive heat loads on the plasma facing components (PFC). Analog CCD cameras operating in the near infrared wavelength are used to measure surface temperature of the PFCs. Region of interest (ROI) analysis is performed in real time and the maximum temperature measured in each ROI is sent to the vessel thermal map.

A new endoscope with optimised divertor view has been developed in order to survey and monitor the emission of specific impurities such as tungsten and the remaining carbon as well as beryllium in the tungsten divertor of JET after the implementation of the ITER-like wall in 2011. The endoscope is a prototype for testing an ITER relevant design concept based on reflective optics only. It may be subject to high neutron fluxes as expected in ITER.

We report the identification of a localized current structure inside the JET plasma. It is a field-aligned closed helical ribbon, carrying current in the same direction as the background current profile (cocurrent), rotating toroidally with the ion velocity (corotating). It appears to be located at a flat spot in the plasma pressure profile, at the top of the pedestal.

Type-I edge-localized modes (ELMs) have been mitigated at the JET tokamak using a static external n=1 perturbation field generated by four error field correction coils located far from the plasma. During the application of the n=1 field the ELM frequency increased by a factor of 4 and the amplitude of the D(alpha) signal decreased. The energy loss per ELM normalized to the total stored energy, DeltaW/W, dropped to values below 2%.
