Mentoring Early-Career Investigators of HIV/STI Health Disparities Research: A Study Examining the CAPS Visiting Professors Program.

Background: To build research capacity for early-career faculty conducting HIV/STI research with minoritized communities and to enhance diversity in the scientific workforce, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Center for AIDS Prevention (CAPS) conducts a training program for visiting professors (VPs), begun in 1996. VPs are in residence at CAPS for three summers, complete a pilot research project, and prepare National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant proposals. Best practices and key elements for successfully training scholars of color, and others who work with minoritized communities, are identified.

Integrating community health workers into HIV care clinics: a qualitative study with health system leaders and clinicians in the Southern United States.

Background: Community health workers (CHWs) can support patient engagement in care for a variety of health conditions, including HIV. This paper reports on the experiences of HIV clinics and health departments that integrated CHWs into their health systems as part of a capacity-building initiative to address HIV-related disparities in the United States.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informants (n = 14) in two Ryan White HIV/AIDS program jurisdictions: Mississippi (jurisdiction covers the entire state) and the city of New Orleans, Louisiana.

However, there has been limited research on the protective role of community and family support during this transition, despite evidence of the benefits of supportive relationships in higher education. Guided by self-determination theory, the current cross-sectional study explored how changes in family and community relationships impact Cuban medical students' sense of belonging in their field and their grade expectations.

Understanding activity and physiology at scale: The Apple Heart & Movement Study.

Physical activity or structured exercise is beneficial in a wide range of circumstances. Nevertheless, individual-level data on differential responses to various types of activity are not yet sufficient in scale, duration or level of annotation to understand the mechanisms of discrete outcomes nor to support personalized recommendations. The Apple Heart & Movement Study was designed to passively collect the dense physiologic data accessible on Apple Watch and iPhone from a large real-world cohort distributed across the US in order to address these knowledge gaps.

Post-translational modifications on protein VII are important during the early stages of adenovirus infection.

Due to the importance of post-translational modification (PTM) in cellular function, viruses have evolved to both take advantage of and be susceptible to such modification. Adenovirus encodes a multifunctional protein called protein VII, which is packaged with the viral genome in the core of virions and disrupts host chromatin during infection. Protein VII has several PTMs whose addition contributes to the subnuclear localization of protein VII.

Ethical Issues in Treating Substance Use Disorders: Counselor Perspectives.

Ethical issues arise frequently in the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD). Counselors need guidance to navigate ethical dilemmas but receive limited training in resolving ethical issues. To narrow the gap between the ethical dilemmas counselors face and their training, this qualitative study assessed ethical issues that counselors encounter, how they resolve them, and desired training.

Syndemic Theory and Its Use in Developing Health Interventions and Programming: A Scoping Review.

Purpose Of Review: The central tenet of syndemics theory is that disease interactions are driven by social factors, and that these factors have to be understood in order to reduce the health burdens of local populations. Without an understanding of the theory and how it is being put into practice, there is a strong possibility of losing the potential for syndemic theory to positively impact change at community and individual level.

Methods: Following an initial database search that produced 921 articles, we developed a multi-stage scoping review process identifying invention studies that employ syndemic theory.

Exploring a mother's engagement in team sport: An application of an extended theory of planned behaviour.

Objectives: Mothers of young children are at-risk for low physical activity. Organised team sport provides additional social and mental health benefits above that of physical activity. To better understand engagement in team sport, this study aimed to apply the theory of planned behaviour, with the addition of maternal identity and social support.

A modular, enantioselective approach to access the bioactive 7,9-dihydroxy- and 9-hydroxy-7-keto-8,4'-oxyneolignans is disclosed, which employs stereoselective Mitsunobu reactions of enantiopure 2-aryl-1,3-dioxan-5-ols and functionalized phenols. The enantiopure dioxanols are prepared through Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation of protected coniferyl or sinapyl alcohols and subsequent benzylidene acetal formation. Through a mix-and-match coupling approach, six of the eight possible -7,9-dihydroxy-8,4'-oxyneolignan enantiomeric natural products (bearing a C-1' hydroxypropyl chain) were generated following sequential deprotection.

Point-of-care urine tenofovir test predicts future HIV preexposure prophylaxis discontinuation among young users.

Background: Young men who have sex with men and transgender women (YMSM/TGW) have disproportionately high HIV incidence and lower preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence. Point-of-care (POC) urine tenofovir (TFV) rapid assay (UTRA) testing permits real-time monitoring for nonadherence within clinical settings. We performed UTRA testing among PrEP users to examine the relationship between low PrEP adherence and future PrEP discontinuation, and the accuracy of POC testing compared to gold-standard liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS).
