This is a retrospective observational study of BactAlert reactive blood cultures (n = 160) from Helgeland Hospital, July-December 2021, analysed by BCID2 locally and conventional culture at a regional laboratory. Between 2010 and 2015 the incidence of vancomycin-resistant (VRE) in Norway increased dramatically. Hence, we selected (1) a random subset of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) from the Norwegian Surveillance System for Communicable Diseases (2010-15; =239) and (2) Norwegian vancomycin-susceptible (VSE) bacteraemia isolates from the national surveillance system for antimicrobial resistance in microbes (2008 and 2014; =261) for further analysis. They confer resistance to oxazolidinone and phenicol antibiotics, such as linezolid and chloramphenicol, which stall translating ribosomes when certain amino acids are present at a defined position in the nascent polypeptide chain.
