Background: Mechanical circulatory supports are used in case of cardiogenic shock (CS) refractory to conventional therapy. Several devices can be employed, but are limited by their availability, benefit risk-ratio, and/or cost.

Aims: To investigate the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of a long-term support by a new available device (IVAC2L) in pigs.

The best way to prevent psychosocial risk is to support the teams in terms of their dynamics and their difficulties. We need to take care of caregivers and other hospital staff. Management has an essential role to play to achieve this objective.

Kinesiophobia and physical therapy-related pain in musculoskeletal pain: A national multicenter cohort study on patients and their general physicians.

Introduction: Physical therapy (PT) represents a major approach in musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. This study aimed to assess kinesiophobia, its impact and management, in patients with MSK pain treated by PT.

Methods: A national multicenter, prospective study was conducted in France in patients with MSK pain referred to PT.

[Vigilance level for cardiovascular risk factors in schizophrenic patients].

Introduction: Schizophrenic patients have increased cardiovascular risk factors and morbi-mortality as compared with the general population.

Objective: To assess the level of French psychiatrists vigilance regarding cardiovascular risk factors in schizophrenic patients.

Methods: Prospective, transverse, multicentric observational study implemented in France in 2007 and conducted by psychiatrists with a liberal activity.

Residual symptoms and functional performance in a large sample of euthymic bipolar patients in France (the OPTHYMUM study).

Background: Some residual symptoms were found to be associated with impaired functioning in euthymic bipolar patients, but their impact and relevance are unclear in clinical practice. We re-examined the functional influence of a large set of residual symptoms in 525 euthymic bipolar outpatients using self- and clinician-rated questionnaires (OPTHYMUM study).

Methods: This was a multi-centre, cross-sectional, non-interventional study of adult bipolar outpatients.

The HEAL, Phase II Project: enhancing features of an electronic medical record system to improve adherence to asthma guidelines.

This article describes the implementation of an enhanced electronic medical record (EMR) system in three community health care centers in the Greater New Orleans area of Louisiana. This report may aid efforts directed at the implementation of enriched tools, such as decision support, in an EMR with the goal of improving pediatric asthma outcomes.

[Who are patients suffering from bipolar disorders in France? The TEMPPO survey: patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics data].

Aim: One of the aims of the TEMPPO study was to describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of a cohort of adult outpatients with type I or type II bipolar disorders (as defined by DSM-IV criteria) in France.

Methods: TEMPPO is a multicenter, cross-sectional, non-interventional study conducted in France between November 2008 and May 2009, with a random sample of academic and private practice psychiatrists. Each psychiatrist who agreed to participate in the study had to: complete a register with data on all consecutive patients (up to 20 patients) consulting during a 2-month period and fulfilling inclusion criteria; include in the study the first five patients of the register with an on-going consultation for at least 6 months; for each of which a detailed questionnaire had been assessed, notably their sociodemographic and bipolar clinical characteristics.

[Treatment practices in the management of patients with bipolar disorder in France. The TEMPPO study].

TEMPPO is an observational, cross-sectional and multicentre study, initiated in the French metropolitan territory in 2009. Set up from a random sample of 135 psychiatrists, it has observed the procedures for therapeutic management of a population (n=619) of their outpatients (respectively 197 and 422 in public and private practice) with bipolar disorder type I or II disorders (DSM-IV). The patients who were followed were mostly very sick.

Risk assessment of electromagnetic fields exposure with metallic orthopedic implants: a cadaveric study.

Metallic materials are well known to strongly interact with electromagnetic fields. While biological effects of such field have been extensively studied, only few works dealt with the interactions of electromagnetic waves with passive metallic device implanted in biological system. Hence only several numerical and phantom simulation studies were focusing on this aspect, whereas no in situ anatomic experiment has been previously performed.

[Evolution of the social autonomy scale (EAS) in schizophrenic patients depending on their management].

It is becoming clear to clinicians that functional prognosis is the issue that should be guiding their choice of therapeutic strategy offered to people with schizophrenic disorders. An individual's degree of social autonomy is one of the principal factors determining functional prognosis, and it has become essential to identify the variables that influence it. The ESPASS survey was set up to follow a cohort of 6000 schizophrenic patients in a naturalistic setting, and was conducted over six months by 1170 psychiatrists.

Carbon nanotubes induce inflammation but decrease the production of reactive oxygen species in lung.

With the rapid spread of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) applications, the respiratory toxicity of these compounds has attracted the attention of many scientists. Several studies have reported that after lung administration, CNTs could induce granuloma, fibrosis, or inflammation. By comparison with the mechanisms involved with other toxic particles such as asbestos, this effect could be attributed to an increase of oxidative stress.

Mice lacking 25OHD 1alpha-hydroxylase demonstrate decreased epidermal differentiation and barrier function.

Keratinocytes express high levels of 25OHD 1alpha-hydroxylase (1OHase). The product of this enzyme, 1,25(OH)(2)D, promotes the differentiation of keratinocytes in vitro. To test whether 1OHase activity is essential for keratinocyte differentiation in vivo we examined the differentiation process in mice null for the expression of the 1alphaOHase gene (1alphaOHase(-/-)) by light and electron microscopy, by immunocytochemistry for markers of differentiation, by ion capture cytochemistry for calcium localization, and by function using transepidermal water loss (TEWL) to assess barrier integrity.

Dietary sources of vitamin C, vitamin E and specific carotenoids in Spain.

A cross-sectional study was conducted within the Spanish cohort of the European Prospective Investigation in Cancer and Nutrition to assess the principal food sources of vitamin C, vitamin E, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, beta-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin in an adult Spanish population. The study included 41446 healthy volunteers (25812 women and 15634 men), aged 29-69 years, from three Spanish regions in the north (Asturias, Navarra and Guipúzcoa) and two in the south (Murcia and Granada). Usual food intake was estimated by personal interview through a computerized version of a dietary history questionnaire.

Density Functional Theory Study of the Dimerization of the Sulfine H(2)CSO.

The dimerization mechanism of the sulfine H(2)CSO (1) is studied using a hybrid DFT method (B3LYP) with a large basis set on the sulfur atom. Single-points post-HF calculations up to the CCSD(T) level were performed for some representative stationary points of the potential energy surface. The (2 + 3) mechanism was predicted to be the lowest energy pathway, with an activation barrier of 12.

Cyclizations of 4-pentenyl, 5-hexenyl, 6-heptenyl, and 7-octenyl fluorinated radicals: a density functional theory theoretical study.

The cyclization reactions of the 4-pentenyl, 5-hexenyl, 6-heptenyl, and 7-octenyl fluorinated and ether radicals have been studied by a hybrid Hartree-Fock density functional method. The reliability of this approach has been confirmed in agreement with experimental data and post-Hartree-Fock projected Møller-Plesset second-order method. The analysis of the theoretical results shows that two factors are crucial for the determination of the regiochemistry and the reactivity of these reactions.

[Therapeutic arthroscopy for recurrent temporomandibular luxation].

Surgery is sometimes indicated in cases of recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocation (luxation). Among the panel of available techniques, therapeutic arthroscopy with retrodiscal tissue and oblique protuberance coagulation has been used to prevent new episodes. Therapeutic arthroscopy was used for 6 patients.

Following a single dose of a new antihypertensive drug, UP 269-6 (5-methyl-7-propyl-8-[(2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) biphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidin-2(3H)-one, CAS 148504-51-2), to 12 healthy volunteers, the plasma levels showed at least two secondary peaks. To explain this observation, the data were fitted to a new compartmental model of enterohepatic recirculation, without using a numerical method. Most subjects exhibited two cycles of recirculation.

A history of miscarriages and mild prognathism as possible mode of presentation of mosaic trisomy 18 in women.

A 22-year-old woman seeking medical assistance for hypofertility after two miscarriages had very slight anomalies: mild macrogenia and prognathism, and temporal depilation. Peripheral lymphocytes and fibroblastic karyotypes disclosed the tenth published case of low-level mosaicism for trisomy 18 with normal intelligence. Subfertility is frequently observed among these patients.

Clinical results of therapeutic temporomandibular joint arthroscopy: a prospective study of 34 arthroscopies with prediscal section and retrodiscal coagulation.

Thirty-four therapeutic temporomandibular arthroscopies were done during a 24-month period for patients with debilitating joint disorders (mainly disc displacements with or without reduction) who had not responded to non-invasive treatment. Lysis and lavage with prediscal section and retrodiscal coagulation were the techniques used. Analysis of the results indicated subjective improvement of pain in 71% of cases, noise in 78%, jaw opening in 88% and diet in 97% and objective evidence of disappearance of noise in 29% and improvement of jaw opening in 94% (mean 9.

[Combination of oral administration of cibenzoline and digoxin in patients with supraventricular arrhythmia].

Chronic co-administration of digoxin and several antiarrhythmic drugs increases digoxin plasma levels. To determine the effects of the administration of oral cibenzoline on digoxin plasma levels and its effects on clinical and electrocardiographic parameters, we conducted a prospective multicenter study in 22 cardiac patients with a mean age of 66 +/- 12 years (39-85), who were on long term digoxin therapy (0.25 mg once daily for at least 2 weeks) and who required oral cibenzoline therapy in the prevention of recurrence of symptomatic atrial tachyarrhythmias.

[Comparison of the efficacy/tolerability ratio of cibenzoline and propafenone in the treatment of ventricular arrhythmia].

Cibenzoline (C) was compared with propafenone (P) in 18 adult patients (7 women and 11 men) aged 50 +/- 7 in double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. After a therapeutic wash-out period corresponding to 5 times the half-life of previous anti-arrhythmic drugs, patients with more than 100 premature ventricular contractions (PVC) per hour in two 24 hour Holter records obtained at an interval of 7 days were treated in succession and after randomised by C (390 mg/day in 3 divided doses) and P (900 mg/day in 3 divided doses) for a period of two weeks, each active sequence being followed by a two week wash-out period. Efficacy (based upon the decrease in PVC/hour in a 24 hour Holter) and tolerability were evaluated at the end of each sequence, with samples drawn at the same times for assay of the study drugs.
