Tissue distribution of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn, the essential trace elements associated with oxidant and/or antioxidant processes, was examined in iodine- and/or selenium-deficient rats (ID, SeD, ISeD). Fe and Mn were the most affected minerals in all types of deficiency states. Mn levels decreased significantly in the liver in all deficiency states (approx 20-30%), in the heart in ID and SeD rats (approx 30-35%) and in the testis in ID rats (approx 15%).

We report a modification of the standard resection of the retroportal pancreatic lamina during pancreaticoduodenectomy. The resection begins with the dissection of the origin of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) above the left renal vein and a step-by-step section of the retroportal pancreatic lamina on the right side of the SMA, then the pancreatic head is retracted to the left and freed from the portal vein, and lastly the neck of the pancreas is transected. This technique allows a total lymph node clearance, secures the dissection of the SMA, and allows safe identification of anatomic variations like a replaced right hepatic artery originating from the SMA.

Background: Because some investigators have reported the systematic occurrence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency after pancreaticoduodenectomy with pancreaticogastric anastomosis (PGA), we assessed PGA patency after pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Methods: Nineteen patients underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy, and their PGAs were studied prospectively with secretin magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). After administration of negative bowel contrast agent, single-shot fast spin-echo T2-weighted dynamic MR pancreatograms were obtained before and every minute for 12 min after secretin injection.

The aim of the study was to compare the impact of surgical access to sigmoid resection on recurrence rates in patients with uncomplicated diverticulitis of the sigmoid (UDS) at a minimum follow-up of 5 years. Recurrence after surgery was defined as left lower quadrant pain, fever, and leucocytosis with consistent CT and enema findings on admission and at 6 weeks, respectively. Outcome measures included splenic flexure mobilization, specimen length, inflammation at proximal resection margin, and presence of teniae coli at distal resection margin.

There is a general consensus concerning the clinical and radiological approach to diagnosis and proper management strategy in patients with sciatalgia subsequent to disk herniation. Recurrent herniation is the most probable diagnosis when pain recurs the same territory long after surgery. Despite advances in computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging, it may be difficult to identify the real source of the pain in some patients.

Background And Aims: For complicated diverticulitis Hartmann's procedure remains the favored option in patients with acute complicated sigmoid disease, but there has been increasing interest in primary resection and anastomosis with intraoperative colonic lavage. This study compared primary resection with intraoperative colonic lavage and Hartmann's procedure.

Patients And Methods: Between January 1994 and November 2001, 60 patients underwent emergency laparotomy for diverticular peritonitis (Hinchey stages III and IV).

Gene flow and introgression from cultivated to wild plant populations have important evolutionary and ecological consequences and require detailed investigations for risk assessments of transgene escape into natural ecosystems. Sugar beets (Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris) are of particular concern because: (i) they are cross-compatible with their wild relatives (the sea beet, B.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare open with laparoscopic ileocolic resection in selected patients with refractory Crohn's disease confined to terminal ileum and cecum in terms of small-bowel obstruction and recurrence rates at a follow-up of five years.

Methods: Thirty-nine patients who underwent laparoscopic ileocolic resection during a four-year period were compared with 53 patients who had previously undergone open ileocolic resection by the same surgeons at the same institution. Small-bowel obstruction was any clinical evidence of obstruction requiring hospital admission, regardless of recurrent disease or the need for surgery.

Intraperitoneal (IP) ventral hernia repair has been proposed with the advantages of reducing dissection, operative time, and postoperative pain. The IP position of the mesh is suspected of increasing the risk of visceral adhesion and inducing complications. To overcome these drawbacks, a mesh protected on one side by a hydrophilic resorbable film (Parietex Composite) has been validated.

The contribution of CD3gamma to the surface expression, internalization, and intracellular trafficking of the TCR/CD3 complex (TCR) has not been completely defined. However, CD3gamma is believed to be crucial for constitutive as well as for phorbol ester-induced internalization. We have explored TCR dynamics in resting and stimulated mature T lymphocytes derived from two unrelated human congenital CD3gamma-deficient (gamma(-)) individuals.
