Introduction: The doctorate is the third cycle of official university studies, which, through the defense of the doctoral thesis leads to the acquisition of the title of doctor or PhD from the Anglo-Saxon countries. Royal Decree law 99/2011 regulates doctoral programs, with a wide margin on quality requirements. The objective of this study is to find out if there is this variation in the requirements of the doctorate programs of the different departments of surgery of the Spanish public universities and to establish a quality scale.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies (LSGs) can experience weight-loss failure and conversion to another bariatric procedure. An analysis of the bariatric literature concerning the single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) as revisional surgery after LSG in terms of safety and efficacy identified 607 studies. Fifty-nine studies were analyzed for full content review and 9 primary studies (398 patients) were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the variation in requirements for doctorate programs across surgery departments in Spanish public universities.
  • There is significant inconsistency, particularly in the quality of research projects, with most programs lacking specific regulations.
  • The findings suggest a need for standardized demands to enhance the quality of doctoral degrees.

Purpose: Long delays in waiting lists have a negative impact on the principles of equity and providing timely access to care. This study aimed to assess waiting lists for abdominal wall hernia repair (incisional ventral vs. inguinal hernia) to define explicit prioritization criteria.

Background: Most relative weight-loss metrics follow the formula "Weight loss(%) = 100 · (Initial BMI - Final BMI) / (Initial BMI-a)," where a is the reference point that defines the metric. The percentage of total weight loss (%TWL, a = 0) and percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL, a = 25) are influenced by a patient's initial weight. Recently, the percentage of alterable weight loss metric (%AWL, a = 13) has been reported to produce initial-weight-independent outcomes.

The single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) has been introduced in the past few years for the treatment of morbid obesity. SADI-S has shown good results in terms of long-term results and short-term complications. However, the management of patients undergoing SADI-S and suffering from a leak is a great challenge for surgeons.

Background: The 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has caused an outbreak of the disease now officially named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Since then, all hospitals have required a complete restructuring of their usual facilities and the treatments provided. Our goal was to detail the remodeling of a tertiary hospital during the COVID-19 outbreak and analyze pitfalls to avoid increasing surgical department burdens.

The management of morbidly obese patients with a concomitant ventral hernia (VH) is a great challenge for surgeons. There is controversy over the optimal strategy to tackle both health problems, requiring an individualized approach. Obese patients have a higher recurrence rate after hernia repair, and bariatric surgery in the presence of a VH can be difficult.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) remains a concern for surgeons because of the negative impact on outcomes and health care costs. Our purpose was to assess whether topical antibiotics before primary incision closure reduced the rate of SSIs. Systematic review of MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases from inception to January 2017.

Background: Povidone iodine (PVI) is a widely used antiseptic solution among surgeons. A meta-analysis based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to establish whether application of PVI before wound closure could reduce surgical site infection (SSI) rates.

Methods: Systematic review of MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases from inception to September 2017, with no language restrictions.

Background: Primary ventral hernia (PVH) and incisional hernia (IH) repair using a mesh appears to reduce hernia recurrence. However, are the benefits of mesh offset in part by mesh-related complications? The aim of this study was to compare placement of a mesh versus simple suture for recurrence and postoperative complications in the repair of PVH or IH.

Methods: Five databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Aim: To assess factors independently associated with low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) following resection or rectal cancer.

Method: Cross-sectional study carried out in two acute-care teaching hospitals in Barcelona, Spain. Patients who had undergone sphincter preserving low anterior resection with curative intent, with total or partial mesorectal excision (with and without protective ileostomy) between January 2001 and December 2009 completed a self-administered questionnaire to assess bowel dysfunction after rectal cancer surgery.

To compare patients with complex abdominal wall hernias undergoing surgical repair using synthetic nonabsorbable or biologic meshes in contaminated fields. Retrospective review of 62 patients with complex abdominal wall hernia with surgical repair in an elective setting and in the context of a clean-contaminated or contaminated fields (January 2009-April 2015). Two groups according to the prosthesis (synthetic nonabsorbable, n = 48 or biologic, n = 14).

Background: In patients with insufficient weight loss after sleeve gastrectomy (SG) or in super obese individuals, among many surgical options available, a single-anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass (SADI) after SG (SADI-S) could be considered. Due to the limited information available about the use of SADI as a second-step procedure, the objective of this study was to evaluate the mid-term results and responsiveness of SADI after sleeve gastrectomy.

Methods: We present prospective data from 30 consecutive patients with a mean BMI of 40.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the reduction in the incidence of parastomal hernia (PH) after placement of prophylactic synthetic mesh using a modified Sugarbaker technique when a permanent end-colostomy is needed.

Summary Of Background Data: Prevention of PH formation is crucial given the high prevalence of PH and difficulties in the surgical repair of PH.

Methods: A randomized, prospective, double-blind, and controlled trial.

Background: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is frequent following sphincter-sparing procedures for rectal cancer.

Objective: This study aims to assess surgeons' awareness of LARS.

Design: This was a survey study.

Background: Development of an incisional hernia is one of the most frequent complications of midline laparotomies requiring reoperation. This paper presents the rationale, design, and study protocol for a randomized controlled trial, the aim of which is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of prophylactically placing a bioabsorbable synthetic mesh for reinforcement of a midline fascial closure.

Methods: The PREBIOUS trial (PREventive midline laparotomy closure with a BIOabsorbable mesh) is a multicenter randomized controlled trial in which adult patients undergoing elective or urgent open abdominal operations through a midline laparotomy incision are assigned to one of two groups based on the laparotomy closure procedure: an intervention group in which a continuous polydioxanone (PDS) suture is reinforced with a commercially available GORE® BIO-A® Tissue Reinforcement prosthesis (W.
