In this study, the ability of six limonoids from (Meliaceae) to activate the liver X receptor (LXR) was assessed. One of these limonoids, flindissone, was shown to activate LXR by reporter-gene assays. Flindissone is a ring-intact limonoid, structurally similar to sterol-like LXR ligands.

The identification and subsequent quantification of phenolic compounds in plants is the first step toward harnessing their associated nutritional and health benefits. Due to their diverse phenolic compound compositions, grain legumes are known for their high nutritional and health values. The aim of this study was to assess the inter-variations in chemical composition, phytochemical content, and antioxidant capacity of seed extracts from eight Kersting's groundnut [ (Harms) Marechal & Baudet] landraces.

Traditional African medicine is a source of new molecules that might be useful in modern therapeutics. We tested ten limonoids, six quinones, one xanthone, one alkaloid, and one cycloartane, isolated from four Cameroonian medicinal plants, and one plant-associated endophytic fungus, against , the etiological agent of Chagas disease (CD). Vero cells, or human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CM) were infected with trypomastigotes (discrete typing unit types I or II).

Three new limonoids, designated as rubescins F (1), G (2), and H (3), together with two known compounds of this type, TS1 (4) and trichirubine A (5), were isolated from methylene chloride/methanol extracts of Trichilia rubescens leaves. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis and complemented by electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry results and by comparison to data of related compounds described in the literature and ab initio calculations. Rubescin F (1) is the first limonoid from Trichilia spp.

Article Synopsis
  • Cowpea seeds exhibit significant morpho-genetic diversity in Africa, yet their hulls' phytochemical profiles remain under-researched.
  • A study using UPLC-QTOF-MS identified 34 secondary metabolites in seed-coats from thirteen cowpea accessions, highlighting variations in phenolic compounds based on seed-coat pigmentation.
  • The analysis suggests that darker-seeded cowpeas have higher concentrations of beneficial metabolites, indicating their potential for food and pharmaceutical applications.

Bambara groundnut is one of the under-utilized African legume crops, valued for its nutritional and health benefits, and for which ongoing studies will help to distinguish its many landraces and select the promising one for breeding programs. To describe the polar metabolome of the seed from 21 Bambara groundnut landraces, untargeted metabolomics approach using UPLC-qTOF-MS (Ultra performance liquid chromatography-Quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry) was performed. Metabolites belonging to varied compound classes were detected and identified.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers isolated two new compounds, rubescins I and J, from the stem bark of the Trichilia rubescens tree, along with six already known compounds.
  • The identified known compounds include rubescin D, lichexanthone, scopoletin, scopoletin O-glycoside, β-sitosterol, and stigmasterol.
  • The structures of these compounds were analyzed using techniques like mass spectrometry (MS) and NMR, as well as comparisons with existing research.

Background: Limonoids are highly oxygenated compounds with a prototypical structure. Their occurrence in the plant kingdom is mainly confined to plant families of Meliaceae and Rutaceae. Owing to their wide range of pharmacological and therapeutic properties, this study was aimed at investigating the potential nitric oxide (NO) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity and the cytotoxicity of three limonoids: trichilia lactone D5 (1), rohituka 3 (2) and dregeanin DM4 (3), isolated from Trichilia welwitschii C.
