Medicinal applications of vanadium complexes with Schiff bases.

Many transition metal complexes have been explored for their therapeutic properties after the discovery of cisplatin. Schiff bases have an efficient complexation tendency with the transition metals and several medicinal properties have been reported. However, fewer studies have reported the medicinal utility of vanadium and its Schiff base complexes.

Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic studies of tetranuclear hydroxo and ligand bridged [Co4(μ3-OH)2(μ2-dea)2(L-L)4]4Cl·8H2O [L-L = 2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline] complexes with mixed valence defect dicubane core.

X-ray crystallography of the title complexes indicates a discrete mixed valence (Co2(II)-Co2(III)) defect dicubane molecular unit where each cobalt nucleus attains a distorted octahedral geometry. The α-diimine (L-L) chelator coordinated to each cobalt ion stops further polymerization or nuclearization. The water molecules in the lattice play a crucial role in the formation of the supramolecular architectures.

Complexes of stoichiometries [M(oda)(4-pic)H(2)O]·xH(2)O [M = Cu(1), x = 2; Co (2), x = 4; Ni (3), x = 2; ] [Fe(oda)(4-pic)]·Cl (4) and {[Cu(2-pa)(2)]·2H(2)O}(n) (5) (H(2)oda = oxydiacetic acid, 4-pic = 4-picoline and 2-paH = 2-picolinic acid) were prepared to explore their uses as possible models for mono- and poly-nuclear metallo-pharmaceuticals. The chemical structures were elucidated by IR, FAB-Mass, (1)H, (13)C NMR, EPR and UV-visible (ligand field) spectral analyses. Electrochemical investigations are consistent with formation of stable quasi-reversible redox Co(II/III) and Cu(II/III) couples in the solution.

The present ternary complexes [Cu(ada)(phen)(H(2)O)]·2H(2)O (1), [Co(2)(ada)(2)(phen)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (2) and [{Cu(ada)(3)(bipy)}(n)·3nH(2)O] (3) (H(2)ada=adipic acid, phen=1,10-phenanthroline and bipy=2,2'-bipyridine) obtained under varying experimental conditions were characterized by spectral, electrochemical and thermal studies. The bonding modes and the spatial arrangements of the carboxylate dianion around the metal ions have been investigated employing FTIR, EPR and X-ray crystallographic studies.
