Article Synopsis
  • * Pharmacy faculty adopted ungrading techniques in various courses, employing strategies like formative feedback, peer assessment, and discussions to meet learning goals.
  • * Surveys indicated that students felt better prepared for practical experiences and showed a positive response to ungrading practices, suggesting these methods may improve student well-being and learning outcomes in pharmacy education.

Introduction: Increasing evidence shows that conservative management of ovarian tumors classified as benign, based on ultrasound assessment, is safe. Therefore, conservative management has been adopted as the preferred strategy for certain ovarian tumors assessed as benign in the Dutch national guideline on enlarged ovaries in 2013. The aim of this study was to examine whether implementation of this guideline has led to changes in the number of women/100 000 women undergoing surgery for an ovarian tumor in the Netherlands.

A pharmacist-led COVID-19 vaccination screening and administration tool was implemented at a tertiary care hospital in the Upper Midwest, allowing pharmacists to determine if an inpatient is a candidate for the COVID-19 vaccination. The purpose of this observational study was to examine the feasibility of a pharmacist-led, COVID-19 vaccination administration workflow to the inpatient population in a tertiary care hospital. This observational study was conducted at an Upper-Midwest facility and includes a study population of adult patients admitted to the hospital between 10/1/2021 - 1/1/2022.

Article Synopsis
  • * The tumors display characteristic features such as high cellularity, perivascular pseudo-rosettes, and notable cytoplasmic expression of epithelial membrane antigen, with MRI showing large multinodular tumors.
  • * Most affected patients are young girls under 3 years, and despite one surgical fatality, the rest remain alive and disease-free, indicating a generally favorable prognosis after treatment.

A 17-year-old girl was found vomiting and somnolent at home and was taken to a hospital. The girl initially presented with ventricular tachycardia with broad QRS complexes which was very difficult to control. During the course a subsequent cardiogenic shock developed and despite exhaustion of all therapeutic options the fatal outcome could not be averted.

Medical History: In February 2007, a 13-year old boy presented with a livid tumour in the lower conjunctival fornix of the left eye. OPHTHALMOLOGICAL FINDINGS: The tumor was salmon-coloured, bulging and elastic and filled the whole lower conjunctival fornix of the left eye. There was no other pathological finding in the left eye.

Objectives: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers continuous non-invasive monitoring of regional tissue oxygenation. We evaluated NIRS monitoring during the postoperative course after superior cavopulmonary anastomosis in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and anatomically related malformations.

Methods: Cerebral (cSO(2)) and somatic (sSO(2)) tissue oxygenations were recorded for 48 h and compared with routine measures of intensive care monitoring.

Infantile spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) caused by homozygous SMN1 gene deletions/mutations is characterized by neuronal loss and axonopathy of motor neurons. We report two unrelated patients with severe SMA type I who had only one SMN2 copy and developed ulcerations and necroses of the fingers and toes. Sural nerve biopsy was normal in patient 1, whose affected skin displayed necroses and thrombotic occlusions of small vessels.

In this paper, a retrospective study was performed to find out whether the introduction of early nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) as a new standard regime of very low birthweight infants will lead to a decreasing tracheal intubation and ventilation rate, as well as to a lower incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in a tertiary-level perinatal centre. Ninety-three infants (study group) with early nCPAP as the first respiratory support were compared to 63 infants (historical control group) born before the use of early nCPAP. No statistically significant differences were found in the baseline characteristics.

Aim: To compare the predictive value of impedance index (ZI, height2/impedance) with anthropometric measurements for estimating fat-free mass (FFM).

Methods: FFM of 120 white paediatric children (46 males, 74 females), aged 2.5-18 years was measured by using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Objectives: To investigate the precision of published prediction equations for fat-free mass (FFM) from bioimpedance measurements in children with Crohn disease using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as an in vivo gold standard.

Methods: Fat-free mass of 49 white boys and girls ages 7.3 to 16.

Unlabelled: Detailed knowledge of body composition in preterm neonates during their later postnatal period may be important for the treatment process. However, little consideration has been given to test whether bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a useful bedside method to predict fat-free mass (FFM). The aim of the study is to assess whether BIA is a bedside method to measure FFM in preterm neonates.

The diagnostic biochemical hallmarks of Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) are elevated concentrations of the cholesterol precursors 7- and 8-dehydrocholesterol (7- and 8-DHC). We describe a patient with classical SLOS phenotype and oesophageal achalasia, which has not been reported in SLOS patients before. Plasma 7-DHC and 8-DHC were only marginally elevated.

Background: Restrictive dermopathy is a very rare autosomal recessive skin disorder. The typical pathologic findings are striking: microstomia, micrognathia, thin but very tight translucent skin that tears spontaneously, and arthrogryposis multiplex. The mechanisms behind this disease are unknown.

Unlabelled: Hyperimmunoglobulinaemia D syndrome (HIDS) is defined as recurrent fever, generalised lymphadenitis, abdominal pain, arthritis and raised polyclonal serum IgD >100 IU/ml. The cause is a mutation in the mevalonate kinase gene. Other periodic fever syndromes are known.

The use of peripubertal donors in embryo transfer (ET) programs presents significant opportunity to accelerate genetic gain in domestic livestock by reducing the generation interval. These studies were designed to evaluate feasibility of superovulation and embryo recovery in peripubertal heifers (starting at 7.8 months of age), and to determine whether subsequent reproductive and lactational performance of donor heifers were impaired.

Aim: To measure the relationship of resting energy expenditure (REE) and body composition, and to compare REE data calculated from anthropometric parameters using published equations with measurements obtained by indirect calorimetry (IC) in a population of obese paediatric patients.

Methods: The study included 82 healthy obese paediatric subjects (49 boys, 33 girls; body mass index 29.6 +/- 5.

Renally excreted 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2(')-deoxyguanosine (oxo(8)dG) is a potential marker of oxidative DNA damage by reactive oxygen species. Whole-body degradation rates of t- and rRNA are potential indicators of the resting metabolic rate (RMR). Excretion rates of oxo(8)dG and degradation rates of t- and rRNA were determined in healthy non-smoking adults and children.

This investigation was undertaken to quantify accuracy errors and identify possible linearity errors in dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of bone, based on studies of commercially available bone densitometers for planar densitometry. The following was found in a combination of in vitro phantom studies and in vivo investigations of human volunteers: (1) Pronounced differences between the instruments when measuring vertebral size and contours of the projected bone regions. (2) Falsely low bone mineral content (BMC in terms of g) in cases of low nominal bone mass, due to the fact that edge regions were omitted by the calculation software of some devices.

The introduction of new devices demands the assessment of their capabilities in established terms. The accuracy, reproducibility and spatial resolution of in vitro (phantom) osteodensitometric and morphometric measurements of QDR 2000 Plus and EXPERT are presented. Design details of these DXA/MXA-devices are listed and discussed in combination with the data acquired in the test measurements and calculations.
