Correlation of Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase Antibodies With the Mucosal Changes and IgA Status of Children With Celiac Disease.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the association between serological markers and changes of the intestinal mucosa in children with celiac disease (CD).

Methods: Clinical data from CD patients under 15 years old were collected from the participating centers in an on-line multicenter nationwide observational Spanish registry called REPAC-2 (2011-2017). Correlation between anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (t-TGA) levels and other variables, including mucosal damage and clinical findings (symptoms, age, and gender), was assessed.

Alkaloids, polyphenols, cyanogenic glycosides and saponins are among the main chemical compounds synthesized by plants but not considered essential for their basic metabolism. These compounds have different functions in plants, and have been recognized with medicinal and pharmacological properties. In this research, concentrations of the mentioned secondary metabolites were determined in the medicinal plants Artemisia absinthium, Cnidoscolus aconitifolius, Parthenium hysterophorus, Piper carpunya and Taraxacum officinale, from Ecuador, and related with cytotoxic effects against Artemia salina.

Spanish national registry of celiac disease: incidence and clinical presentation.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the incidence and clinical pattern of celiac disease (CD) presently diagnosed in Spanish children.

Methods: A prospective, multicenter, nationwide registry of new cases of CD in children <15 years was conducted from June 1, 2006 to May 31, 2007. The parameters studied were age at diagnosis, sex, clinical symptoms, associated diseases, nutritional status, CD serology, histological lesions, and HLA-DQ2/-DQ8.

Efficient sonochemical synthesis of alkyl 4-aryl-6-chloro-5-formyl-2-methyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylate derivatives.

A facile, efficient and environment-friendly protocol for the synthesis of 6-chloro-5-formyl-1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives has been developed by the convenient ultrasound-mediated reaction of 2(1H)pyridone derivatives with the Vilsmeier-Haack reagent. This method provides several advantages over current reaction methodologies including a simpler work-up procedure, shorter reaction times and higher yields.

This study aimed to analyze the secondary metabolites in some plant species in order to contribute to their chemotaxonomy. Leaves from Helicteres guazumifolia, Piper tuberculatum, Scoparia dulcis and Solanum subinerme were collected and their essential oils were obtained by means of hydro-distillation.

[Lipid and fatty acid profile of Perna viridis, green mussel (Mollusca: Bivalvia) in different areas of the Eastern Venezuela and the West Coast of Trinidad].

The species Perna viridis is a highly consumed species, which fast growth makes it an interesting aquaculture alternative for Venezuelan and Trinidad coasts. With the aim to contribute with its nutritional value information, this study analyzed lipid and fatty acid contents from samples taken in five locations from Eastern Venezuela and three from Trinidad West Coast. Total lipids were extracted and quantified, from a pooled sample of 100 organisms per location, by standard gravimetric methods, and their identification and quantification was done by TLC/FID (Iatroscan system).

The study of biochemical activity of extracts obtained from marine organisms is gaining interest as some have proved to have efficient health or industrial applications. To evaluate lethality and antimicrobial activities, some chemical tests were performed on crude extracts of the octocorals Eunicea sp., Muricea sp.

Solid state characterization of the anti-HIV drug TMC114: interconversion of amorphous TMC114, TMC114 ethanolate and hydrate.

The interconversion of the ethanolate, hydrate and amorphous form of TMC114 ((3-[(4-amino-benzenesulfonyl)-isobutyl-amino]-1-benzyl-2-hydroxypropyl)-carbamic acid hexahydrofuro-[2,3-b]furan-3-yl ester) in open conditions was characterized. TMC114 hydrate and ethanolate form isostructural channel solvates. The crystal structure of TMC114 was obtained from single crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming that it is a channel solvate.

Fetal and neonatal habituation in infants of diabetic mothers.

Objective: To evaluate whether maternal diabetes alters the habituation ability of fetuses and newborns.

Study Design: Two nonrandomized clinical trials were performed. First, we studied prenatal fetuses of women with pregestational diabetes, and control subjects matched for gestational age, and then we studied infants of diabetic mothers (IDM) and control subjects matched for gestational age and mode of delivery.

Characterization of ternary solid dispersions of Itraconazole in polyethylene glycol 6000/polyvidone-vinylacetate 64 blends.

The good compatibility between Itraconazole and polyvidone-vinylacetate 64 (PVPVA 64) was pointed out previously. However, the dissolution properties of these systems left room for improvement. Therefore polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000), known for its solubilizing and wetting properties, was added to the PVPVA 64 matrix.

Solid state characterization and crystal structure from X-ray powder diffraction of two polymorphic forms of ranitidine base.

Ranitidine hydrochloride (RAN-HCl), a known anti-ulcer drug, is the product of reaction between HCl and ranitidine base (RAN-B). RAN-HCl has been extensively studied; however this is not the case of the RAN-B. The solid state characterization of RAN-B polymorphs has been carried out using different analytical techniques (microscopy, thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry in the attenuated total reflection mode, (13)C-CPMAS-NMR spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction).

Formulation and characterization of ternary solid dispersions made up of Itraconazole and two excipients, TPGS 1000 and PVPVA 64, that were selected based on a supersaturation screening study.

Both d-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 (TPGS 1000) and polyvidone-vinylacetate 64 (PVPVA 64) provided an increase in the degree of supersaturation and stability of supersaturated Itraconazole solutions, compared to a blanc without excipient. Therefore, both components were combined as carrier in order to make ternary solid dispersions of Itraconazole by spray drying. This way, TPGS 1000 could be incorporated into a powder.

Factors influencing pregnancy outcome in women with type 2 versus type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Aim: To compare pregnancy outcome and factors related to adverse perinatal outcome in women with type 1 versus type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM).

Material And Methods: Multicentre retrospective study. Some 404 women were studied, 257 with type 1 DM and 147 with type 2 DM.

Characterization of ternary solid dispersions of itraconazole, PEG 6000, and HPMC 2910 E5.

In order to reduce the crystallinity of PEG 6000, blends were prepared by spray drying and extrusion with the following polymers; PVP K25, PVPVA 64, and HPMC 2910 E5. The maximal reduction of crystallinity in PEG 6000 was obtained by co-spray drying with HPMC 2910 E5. In the next step the model drug Itraconazole was added to the blend and the resulting ternary solid dispersions were characterized.

[Anti-bacterial activity of extracts from fungi collected from mangrove Rhizophora mangle (Rhizophoraceae) roots in Venezuela].

The antibacterial activity of marine fungi extracts was evaluated by a test of efficiency. The fungi were previously inoculated in Malt Agar (EMA) extract with 50% of seawater and growth for 60 days. Triplicate antibiograms were carried out with the extracts.

Phase characterization of indomethacin in binary solid dispersions with PVP VA64 or Myrj 52.

In the present study the properties of binary solid dispersions made up of PVP VA64, Myrj 52 and indomethacin (IMC) are studied and characterized. The solid dispersions were prepared by dissolving the materials in dichloromethane, followed by solvent evaporation under reduced pressure at 55 degrees C in a rotavapor. Binary solid dispersions were characterized by standard and modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry (MTDSC), thermogravimetry (TGA) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD).

Polymorphism of Alprazolam (Xanax): a review of its crystalline phases and identification, crystallographic characterization, and crystal structure of a new polymorph (form III).

A new polymorphic form of Alprazolam (Xanax), 8-chloro-1-methyl-6-phenyl-4H-[1,2,4]triazolo-[4,3-alpha][1,4]benzodiazepine, C(17)H(13)ClN(4), has been investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), single crystal X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This polymorphic form (form III) was obtained during DSC experiments after the exothermic recrystallization of the melt of form I. The crystal unit cell dimensions for form III were determined from diffractometer methods.

The use of a new hydrophilic polymer, Kollicoat IR, in the formulation of solid dispersions of Itraconazole.

Kollicoat IR, a new pharmaceutical excipient developed as a coating polymer for instant release tablets, was evaluated as a carrier in solid dispersions of Itraconazole. The solid dispersions were prepared by hot stage extrusion. Modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray powder diffraction were used to evaluate the miscibility of the drug and the carrier.

Persistence of fetal memory into neonatal life.

Objectives: To test the hypothesis that fetal memory persists into the neonatal period.

Study Design: Forty-one newborns that had been repeatedly stimulated by using fetal vibroacoustic stimulation were compared with 31 controls. The same vibroacoustic stimulator was used for both fetal and neonatal stimulation tests.

Crystal structure of carnidazole form II from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction: structural comparison with form I, the hydrated form and the low energy conformations in vacuo.

The crystal structure of carnidazole form II, O-methyl [2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole-1-yl)ethyl]thiocarbamate, has been determined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction in combination with simulated annealing and whole profile pattern matching, and refined by the Rietveld method. For structure solution, 12 degrees of freedom were defined: one motion group and six torsions. Form II crystallizes in space group P2(1)/n, Z=4, with unit cell parameters after Rietveld refinement: a=13.

Steroidal compounds from the Caribbean octocoral Eunicea laciniata.

A previously isolated trihydroxy-gorgosterol derivative (2), a new gorgosterol (3), and the known sterol cholestane-3beta,5alpha, 6beta-triol are reported from the Caribbean octocoral Eunicea laciniata collected off northeast Venezuela. Using high-resolution 2D NMR techniques, the total structural assignment and detailed stereochemistry of 2 is presented for the first time and the full structure of 3 advanced.
