Article Synopsis
  • Biomarkers for Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) are currently insufficient, leading researchers to study extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their microRNA content as potential diagnostic and monitoring tools.
  • The study involved a liquid biopsy analysis from 50 HNSCC patients and 16 controls, focusing on specific microRNAs in EVs over a 12-month follow-up period.
  • Results indicated significantly higher expression of certain microRNAs in HPV-positive patients, highlighting the need for more extensive research on EV-microRNA expression across different HNSCC subsites for effective diagnosis and treatment monitoring.

Background: Precise risk stratification models are necessary to determine patient selection for deintensifying treatment trials in human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (HPV+ OPSCC).

Methods: We examined 526 cases with OPSCC treated at our department between 2002 and 2017. Every patient was classified after the 7th and 8th edition UICC staging manual.
