A novel third-generation biorefinery approach, including two paths of Ethanol/methane production pathway (EMP) and the direct methane production pathway (DMP), for astaxanthin and ethanol and biogas production from the freshwater microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis was developed previously. To ensure its environmental sustainability, a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) study was conducted based on 1-GJ energy generation from biomethane as the functional unit. Results indicate that the EMP pathway had higher environmental impacts on all categories due to more stages and chemicals/energy consumption (at least five times greater effect).

Overexpression of specific matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) has a key role in development of several diseases, such as cancer, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular diseases due to their critical role in degradation and remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), a family of four in humans, are endogenous inhibitors of MMPs. TIMPs have a high level of sequence and structure homology, with a broad range of binding and inhibition to the family of MMPs.

Hippocampus learning disturbance is a major symptom of patients with seizure, hence hippocampal dysfunction has essential role in worsening the disease. Hippocampal formation includes neurons and myelinated fibers that are necessary for acquisition and consolidation of memory, long-term potentiation and learning activity. The exact mechanism by which seizure can decrease memory and learning activity of hippocampus remains unknown.
