Background: Cerebral vascular malformations are rare but important causes of epilepsy in young women. The risk of bleed during pregnancy and delivery as well as the fetal outcomes are important concerns for women with epilepsy (WWE) due to cerebral vascular malformations (EVM).

Objectives: We compared the maternal and fetal outcomes of a cohort of EVM with women with focal epilepsy due to other causes (ENVM).

Introduction: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a key marker for prostate cancer screening, but its utility is debated, prompting exploration of PSA derivatives for improved accuracy. While racial variations in serum PSA levels are documented, limited data exists for the Indian population. Given increasing life expectancy and heightened awareness of prostate cancer, this study aims to establish age-specific PSA ranges in an Indian cohort, contributing vital insights for population-specific screening and diagnosis.

Hyperglycaemia is common during acute coronary syndromes (ACS) irrespective of diabetic status and portends excess infarct size and mortality, but the mechanisms underlying this effect are poorly understood. We hypothesized that sodium/glucose linked transporter-1 (SGLT1) might contribute to the effect of high-glucose during ACS and examined this using an ex-vivo rodent heart model of ischaemia-reperfusion injury. Langendorff-perfused rat hearts were subjected to 35 min ischemia and 2 h reperfusion, with variable glucose and reciprocal mannitol given during reperfusion in the presence of pharmacological inhibitors of SGLT1.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a known complication of HIV infection. Outcomes of HIV-infected patients with PH (HIV-PH) have not been well established. We aim to assess various in-hospital outcomes such as mortality, resource utilization, and health care burden associated with HIV patients with concurrent PH.

Background: When deep brain stimulation (DBS) infections are identified, they are often too advanced to treat without complete hardware removal. New objective markers to promptly identify DBS infections are needed. We present a patient with GPi (globus pallidus interna) DBS for dystonia, where the electrode impedance unexpectedly increased 3-months post-operatively, followed by serologic and hematologic markers of inflammation at 6-months, prompting explantation surgery.

Niclosamide (NCL) is repurposed to treat inflammatory bowel disease due to its anti-inflammatory properties and potential to reduce oxidative stress. This therapeutic activity remains challenging if administered directly due to its low solubility and high recrystallization tendency in gastric pH. Solid dispersions using pH-dependent polymer will be a better idea to improve the solubility, dissolution and targeted delivery at the colon.

Same Language Subtitling (SLS) of audio-visual content on mainstream TV entertainment to improve mass reading literacy was first conceived and piloted in India. SLS is now being scaled up nationally to ensure that the reading skills of one billion TV viewers, including 600 million weak readers, remain on a lifelong pathway to practice, progress, and proficiency. Will weak readers ignore or try to read along with SLS? Our eye-tracking study investigates this question with 136 weak readers drawn from a remote village in Rajasthan state by showing them popular Hindi film clips of dialog and songs, with and without SLS.

Background And Objective: For 1.3 billion population in India, there are only scarce reports on disability of epilepsy using disability-adjusted life year (DALY) as a measure. Our objective was to estimate DALY using real-life data over a period of time for a cohort of people with epilepsy (PWE) admitted to an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) of a tertiary care epilepsy center.

Gaze estimation problem can be addressed using either model-based or appearance-based approaches. Model-based approaches rely on features extracted from eye images to fit a 3D eye-ball model to obtain gaze point estimate while appearance-based methods attempt to directly map captured eye images to gaze point without any handcrafted features. Recently, availability of large datasets and novel deep learning techniques made appearance-based methods achieve superior accuracy than model-based approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of extracellular histones as harmful molecules in acute myocardial infarction during ischaemia and reperfusion.
  • Histones were found to be released early during reperfusion and were toxic to heart cells; however, using a histone-neutralizing compound significantly reduced heart tissue damage.
  • The findings suggest that targeting extracellular histones could be a new strategy to protect heart cells from injury during myocardial infarction.

The authors hypothesized that despite similar cardiovascular event rates, the improved cardiovascular survival from sodium glucose transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibition, seen clinically, could be via a direct cytoprotective effect, including protection against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. Langendorff-perfused hearts, from diabetic and nondiabetic rats, fed long-term for 4 weeks with canagliflozin, had lower infarct sizes; this being the first demonstration of canagliflozin's cardioprotective effect against ischemia/reperfusion injury in both diabetic and nondiabetic animals. By contrast, direct treatment of isolated nondiabetic rat hearts with canagliflozin, solubilized in the isolated Langendorff perfusion buffer, had no impact on infarct size.

Due to its poor capacity for regeneration, the heart is particularly sensitive to the loss of contractile cardiomyocytes. The onslaught of damage caused by ischaemia and reperfusion, occurring during an acute myocardial infarction and the subsequent reperfusion therapy, can wipe out upwards of a billion cardiomyocytes. A similar program of cell death can cause the irreversible loss of neurons in ischaemic stroke.

We report two cases of anterior megalophthalmos with cataract. Both cases have megalocornea, cavernous anterior chamber, enlarged iris-lens diaphragm, and normal axial length. The vision was less due to cataract.

Purpose: Protecting the heart from ischaemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is a major goal in patients presenting with an acute myocardial infarction. Pyroptosis is a novel form of cell death in which caspase 1 is activated and cleaves interleukin 1β. VX-785 is a highly selective, prodrug caspase 1 inhibitor that is also clinically available.

This article highlights a peculiar case of Crohn's disease (CD) with the primary presenting symptom as localized gingival overgrowth in the anterior region of maxilla. The patient underwent surgical treatment with external bevel gingivectomy procedure. Follow-up after 6 months revealed no recurrence.

Digital histopathological images provide detailed spatial information of the tissue at micrometer resolution. Among the available contents in the pathology images, meso-scale information, such as the gland morphology, texture, and distribution, are useful diagnostic features. In this work, focusing on the colon-rectal cancer tissue samples, we propose a multi-scale learning based segmentation scheme for the glands in the colon-rectal digital pathology slides.

Introduction: Tumors within the pancreatic head show a variable density and enhancement on computerized tomography (CT). The relationship between the radiological appearance of pancreatic adenocarcinoma on CT and survival remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the tumor density on CT and survival.

Background: Exosomes are nanometer-sized vesicles released from cells into the blood, where they can transmit signals throughout the body. Shown to act on the heart, exosomes' composition and the signaling pathways they activate have not been explored. We hypothesized that endogenous plasma exosomes can communicate signals to the heart and provide protection against ischemia and reperfusion injury.

Cytokinesis, the process by which cytoplasm is apportioned between dividing daughter cells, requires coordination of myosin II function, membrane trafficking, and central spindle organization. Most known regulators act during late cytokinesis; a few, including the myosin II-binding proteins anillin and supervillin, act earlier. Anillin's role in scaffolding the membrane cortex with the central spindle is well established, but the mechanism of supervillin action is relatively uncharacterized.
