Background: Lip and oral cavity cancer is leading cause of cancer mortality among Indian men. This study evaluated diagnostic accuracy of mobile health (mHealth) enabled screening for early detection of oral premalignant lesions or oral cancer (OPML/OC). It also described epidemiology of tobacco and other substance use and associated oral lesions in rural northern India.

Introduction: The dearth of population-based data on polysubstance use, especially in young emerging adults, presents a critical gap in understanding public health challenges, particularly in rural India, where tobacco and oral cancer are prevalent. This study addresses this gap by investigating the prevalence and patterns of substance use, with a focus on young emerging adults (18-29 years) within a high-risk cohort for oral cancer in Varanasi, India.

Methods: The study involved a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 10,101 participants within a high-risk cohort in rural settings of the Varanasi district between December 2020-June 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces a new surgical method called the "trans-facial" approach for accessing and removing small retromolar trigone (RMT) lesions without needing larger procedures like free tissue transfer.
  • Eight patients with small tumors underwent this technique, showing positive outcomes with no major post-operative complications and effective cancer control.
  • The results suggest that this approach offers a practical and effective option for treating small RMT lesions with good recovery rates.

Introduction: The association between areca nut consumption and oral cancer has been a subject of increasing concern in global public health.

Global Perspective: Areca nut, often chewed in various forms such as betel quid, is deeply rooted in cultural practices across Asia and other parts of the world. Epidemiological studies consistently reveal a significant correlation between areca nut use and the incidence of oral cancer, emphasizing the need for targeted preventive measures.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated skip metastasis in early-stage oral cancer patients who appeared clinically node-negative, aiming to understand its frequency and factors influencing its occurrence.
  • Among 761 patients, skip metastasis occurred infrequently, specifically at level III (1.2%) and level IV (0.3%), with perineural invasion identified as a predictor for level III metastasis.
  • The findings imply that removing lymph nodes up to level III may be sufficient for most patients, given the low incidence of skip metastasis and minimal impact on long-term survival rates.

Purpose: The current American Joint Cancer Committee (AJCC) staging system for salivary gland tumors does not include histology and grade in its classification despite their proven prognostic importance. We planned to analyze if a modified staging system integrating these two factors into the staging improves prognostic performance and then validate it externally.

Materials And Methods: From SEER database (2000-2018), patients with major salivary gland carcinoma who underwent surgical resection between 2004 and 2015 were analyzed.

Oral submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic disease that mainly affects the upper part of the aerodigestive tract. Areca nut and betel quid chewing has been established as the most significant causative factor for this condition. While OSMF is a predominantly Asian disease, the migrant populations from the region have taken the disease across the globe.

Primary and secondary Sjogrens syndrome (SS) is the classification used, according to the American-European Consensus Group Criteria. Salivary and lacrimal gland dysfunctions are the usual hallmark of the disease, but the involvement of other exocrine glands and extraglandular manifestations of the disease do occur. In rare cases, few patients are refractory to the conventional therapy and due to the sudden increase in size of a mass and the esthetic and psychological concerns of a "cancerous growth," the surgical treatment modalities have to be modified.
