In adults, alcohol intoxication is associated with prolongation of the QT interval corrected for heart rate (QTc). The QTc is influenced by age and sex. Although alcohol intoxication is increasingly common in adolescents, there are no data on the prevalence of QTc prolongation in adolescents with alcohol intoxication.

Article Synopsis
  • Tricuspid valve agenesis/atresia (TVA) is a birth defect where the tricuspid valve doesn't form, potentially due to improper development of the atrioventricular canal (AVC).
  • Researchers used high-resolution imaging to study fetal hearts with TVA and tricuspid valve stenosis (TVS), finding a deeper right atrioventricular sulcus in TVA cases, supporting the hypothesis of AVC expansion failure.
  • In a study of 23 TVA and 16 TVS fetuses, results showed that while overall heart dimensions increased with age, TVA presented a significantly lower AVC to ventricular width ratio in the second trimester, although this normalized by the third trimester due to possible compensatory growth.

Background: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is associated with potentially fatal arrhythmias. Treatment is very effective, but its diagnosis may be challenging. Importantly, different methods are used to assess the QT interval, which makes its recognition difficult.

In patients with Long-QT Syndrome (LQTS), mechanical abnormalities have been described. Recognition of these abnormalities could potentially be used in the diagnosis of LQTS, especially in the foetus where an ECG is not available and DNA-analysis is invasive. We aimed to develop and validate a marker for these mechanical abnormalities in children and to test its feasibility in foetuses as a proof of principle.

Age- and gender-related differences in QTc-interval are most likely the result of changes in sex-specific hormones. Although the exact mechanisms and pathophysiology of sex hormones on the QTc-interval are not known, testosterone appears to shorten the QTc-interval. In females, however, there is a more complex interaction between progesterone and estrogen.
