Bosniak classification version 2019 (v2019) was a major revision to version 2005 (v2005) that defined cystic renal mass subclasses based on wall or septa features. To determine the proportion of malignancy within cystic renal masses stratified by Bosniak classification v2019 class and feature-based subclass. MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched on July 24, 2023 for studies published in 2019 or later that reported cystic renal masses that underwent renal-mass CT or MRI, were assessed using Bosniak v2019, and had a reference standard (histopathology indicating benignity or malignancy or ≥5-year imaging follow-up indicating benignity).

Bladder cancer is the 10th most common and 13th most deadly cancer worldwide, with urothelial carcinomas being the most common type. Distinguishing between non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is essential due to significant differences in management and prognosis. MRI may play an important diagnostic role in this setting.

Objectives: Asymmetries on screening contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) often lead to patient recall. However, in diagnostic settings, negative CEM has effectively classified these as normal or benign, questioning the need for further workup of non-enhancing asymmetries (NEAs).

Material And Methods: A computational search of all screening CEM examinations performed between December-2012 and June-2021 was conducted to identify cases reporting NEAs.

Objective: To evaluate the T2 signal intensity (SI) of axillary lymph nodes as a potential functional imaging marker for metastasis in patients with mucinous breast cancer.

Methods: A retrospective review of breast MRIs performed from April 2008 to March 2024 was conducted to identify patients with mucinous breast cancer and adenopathy. Two independent, masked readers qualitatively assessed the T2 SI of tumors and lymph nodes.

Background: The efficacy of Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) for the second transurethral resection (TUR) has not been adequately validated. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of the VI-RADS for high-risk patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) who are candidates for a second TUR.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 116 patients who received magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prior to an initial TUR and underwent a second TUR for a diagnosis of high-risk NMIBC at the initial TUR.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the airborne transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 in various indoor settings, using carbon dioxide levels to gauge infection risk.
  • Results show that certain environments, like homes and hospitals, have much higher transmission risks than others, such as college classrooms and public transportation, especially when masks are not worn.
  • Mask-wearing and improved ventilation significantly reduce these risks, indicating effective strategies for preventing airborne transmission in indoor spaces.

Women with extremely dense breasts account for approximately 10% of the screening population and face an increased lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. At the same time, the sensitivity of mammography, the first-line screening modality, is significantly reduced in this breast density group, owing to the masking effect of the abundant fibroglandular tissue. Consequently, this population has garnered increasing scientific attention due to the unique diagnostic challenge they present.

Aims: Lenvatinib mesylate (LEN) is an orally administered tyrosine kinase inhibitor used to treat various cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). LEN therapy for HCC is associated with a high incidence of adverse events, including hypertension (HTN). However, the risk factors associated with LEN therapy remain unclear.

  • In March 2024, a public health issue in Japan linked red yeast rice supplements to kidney problems, including nephrotic syndrome in a 74-year-old man.
  • The man's condition was diagnosed as membranous nephropathy, confirmed by specific immunostaining, and potentially triggered by the supplement he was taking.
  • The case suggests that even asymptomatic individuals consuming red yeast rice products could have underlying kidney damage, highlighting that the reported health risks may not fully encompass the potential dangers.

  • - Takayasu arteritis (TAK) is a serious condition that affects large blood vessels, leading to issues like blockages and aneurysms; it's primarily treated with glucocorticoids, but new biological drugs like tocilizumab are proving effective.
  • - Patients on tocilizumab may face higher surgical complications, such as infection or delayed healing, and typically do not show increased inflammatory markers during infections, making management challenging.
  • - There is a lack of guidelines for the best perioperative care for TAK patients needing cardiovascular surgery, but this article proposes a protocol based on recent evidence to help reduce complications in these patients.

Introduction: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into orthopedics has enhanced the diagnosis of various conditions; however, its use in diagnosing soft-tissue tumors remains limited owing to its complexity. This study aimed to develop and assess an AI-driven diagnostic support system for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based soft-tissue tumor diagnosis, potentially improving accuracy and aiding radiologists and orthopedic surgeons.

Methods: An experienced orthopedic oncologist and radiologist annotated 720 images from 77 cases (41 benign and 36 malignant soft-tissue tumors).

Japanese spotted fever (JSF) is a tick-borne disease caused by and primarily affects the warmer coastal areas of Japan. Early treatment with tetracycline antibiotics is crucial to prevent severe complications, such as pneumonia, meningitis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and systemic inflammatory response syndrome. An 83-year-old man with hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and hyperuricemia presented with DIC and subsequently developed septic shock.

Aim: Lenvatinib mesylate (LEN) is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor used to treat various cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC treatment with LEN is associated with a very high incidence of adverse events. This study was aimed at investigating the incidence of LEN-induced palmar-planter erythrodysesthesia syndrome (PPES) and its relationship with patient demographics by analyzing clinical laboratory data of LEN-treated patients with HCC.

Introduction: Symptom status and treatment changes among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using inhaler treatment in real-world clinical settings are not well understood, particularly according to class of treatment. We investigated the proportion of symptomatic patients among those with COPD using inhaler treatment, based on COPD Assessment Test (CAT) scores in clinical practice, and changes in inhaler treatments and symptoms at 1-year follow-up.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of data from a multicenter, prospective cohort study conducted at medical institutions with respiratory specialists in Japan.

Objective: To investigate clinical, pathology, and imaging findings associated with inguinal lymph node (LN) metastases in patients with prostate cancer (PCa).

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective single-center study of patients with PCa who underwent imaging and inguinal LN biopsy between 2000 and 2023. We assessed the following aspects on multimodality imaging: inguinal LN morphology; extrainguinal lymphadenopathy; the extent of primary and recurrent tumors; and non-nodal metastases.

  • The study analyzed changes in disease burden and treatment methods for severe asthma patients in Japan from 2015 to 2019, using health insurance data for patients aged 16 and older.
  • The number of severe asthma cases increased over the years, but the proportion of patients experiencing two or more exacerbations decreased, indicating better management of the condition.
  • While treatment options like biologics and long-acting medications improved, there is still a significant number of patients (around 21.5%) who continue to experience asthma exacerbations, highlighting ongoing treatment gaps.
