Robotic purse-string suture technique for intracorporeal anastomosis using double-stapling technique in robotic resection of rectal and sigmoid colon cancer: a propensity score-matched analysis.

Background: Robotic three-dimensional magnified visual effects and field of view stabilization have enabled precise surgical operations. Intracorporeal anastomosis in right-sided colorectal cancer surgery is expected to shorten operation times, avoid paralytic ileus, and shorten wound lengths; however, there are few reports of intracorporeal anvil fixation for intestinal anastomosis in left-sided colorectal cancer surgery. Herein, we introduce a simple, novel procedure for using robotic purse-string suture (RPSS) in intracorporeal anastomosis with the double-stapling technique in rectal and sigmoid cancer surgery and report short-term outcomes.

Adverse events related to platelet-rich plasma therapy and future issues to be resolved.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is the portion of plasma with a platelet concentration above baseline that is recovered through centrifugation of autologous blood. PRP therapy is currently used for wound healing and pain relief in diverse medical fields. Although there have been recent reports of adverse events (AEs) possibly related to PRP treatment, the safety profile of PRP treatment remains unclear.

Risk factors for collisions attributed to microsleep-related behaviors while driving in professional truck drivers.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is prevalent among professional drivers. Although SDB is a known risk factor for truck collisions attributed to microsleep-related behaviors at the wheel (TC-MRBs), the usefulness of overnight pulse oximetry for predicting TC-MRBs is debatable. This retrospective study assessed the association between overnight pulse oximetry parameters, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and TC-MRBs, confirmed by dashcam footage.

Reducing image artifacts in sparse projection CT using conditional generative adversarial networks.

Reducing the amount of projection data in computed tomography (CT), specifically sparse-view CT, can reduce exposure dose; however, image artifacts can occur. We quantitatively evaluated the effects of conditional generative adversarial networks (CGAN) on image quality restoration for sparse-view CT using simulated sparse projection images and compared them with autoencoder (AE) and U-Net models. The AE, U-Net, and CGAN models were trained using pairs of artifacts and original images; 90% of patient cases were used for training and the remaining for evaluation.

New Maintenance Culture Method for Intestinal Stem Cells Derived from Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells.

Most orally administered drugs exert their effects after being absorbed in the small intestine. Therefore, new drugs must undergo nonclinical pharmacokinetic evaluations in the small intestine. Enterocytes derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are expected to be used in the evaluation system, as they reflect human intestinal characteristics more accurately; moreover, several differentiation protocols are available for these cells.

Standards for psychosocial care in pediatric cancer: adapted proposal for Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Objective: To highlight the objectives, achievements, challenges, and next steps for the World Health Organization's Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC) framework, a project designed to improve psychosocial care (PSC) in pediatric cancer centers across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

Methods: The project was launched in Peru, the first GICC focal country, in November 2020. The diagnosis phase included a survey and a semistructured interview with health professionals to assess PSC practices in institutions, and a needs assessment survey for caregivers.

Surgery for multiple gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors and large esophageal diverticulum related to germline mutation of the KIT gene: a case report.

Background: Familial gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract caused by germline gain-of-function mutations in the KIT gene or platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha gene (PDGFRA). These mutations cause not only multiple GISTs but also diffuse hyperplasia of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), which is related to esophageal motility disorder.

Application to Butterbur Products of a Suggested Daily Intake-Based Safety Evaluation of Individual Herbal Supplements with Cytochrome P450 Expression as a Major Index.

The present paper first proposes a method for ensuring the safety of commercial herbal supplements, termed the suggested daily intake-based safety evaluation (SDI-based safety evaluation). This new method was inspired as a backward analog of the acceptable daily intake (ADI) derivation from the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL), the basis of food additive risk analysis; namely, rats are dosed with individual herbal supplement products at the SDI for human use multiplied by 100 (the usual uncertainty factor value) per body weight for 8 d. The primary endpoint is the sign of adverse effects on liver, especially gene expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP) isoforms.

Feasibility and learning curve for robotic surgery in a small hospital: A retrospective cohort study.

Robotic surgery rates, typified by the use of the da Vinci Surgical System, have increased in recent years. However, robotic surgery is mostly performed in large hospitals and has not been fully implemented in small hospitals. Therefore, we aimed to verify the feasibility of robotic surgery in small hospitals and verify the number of cases in which perioperative preparation for robotic surgery is stable by creating a learning curve in small hospitals.

Current status of platelet-rich plasma therapy under the act on the safety of regenerative medicine in Japan.

In Japan, a legal framework has been established for the safe and effective application of regenerative medicine. After eight years of the Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine (RM Act), discussions have been underway in the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan to revise the law owing to numerous novel technologies and inappropriate case reports not anticipated when the law was enacted. Therefore, in this review article, we have reviewed the regenerative medicine provision plans and the contribution of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, a regenerative medicine technique widely used in Japan post RM Act implementation, to these plans.

The relationship between sleep apnea and morning affectivity remains unclear. We aimed to clarify how sleep disturbance in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) influences their affectivity. The enrolled participants underwent the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule on their beds immediately before and after overnight polysomnography.

Advanced emergency braking system reduces the risk of motor vehicle collisions caused by falling asleep while driving in patients with untreated obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea leads to excessive daytime sleepiness and cognitive dysfunction, which are risk factors for motor vehicle collisions. We aimed to clarify if vehicles with an advanced emergency braking system could reduce motor vehicle collisions caused by falling asleep while driving among patients with untreated obstructive sleep apnea. We enrolled patients with untreated obstructive sleep apnea who underwent polysomnography.

Effects of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy on Nocturnal Blood Pressure Fluctuation Patterns in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, a well-established treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), on nocturnal blood pressure fluctuations (NBPFs) during rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and to evaluate the NBPF patterns in patients with OSA. We included 34 patients with moderate-to-severe OSA who underwent polysomnography using pulse transit time before and at 3−6 months after CPAP therapy. Nocturnal BP and NBPF frequency in REM and non-REM sleep were investigated, as well as NBPF pattern changes after receiving CPAP therapy.

Efficacy of a Combination Therapy for Difficulties Waking Up in Non-School-Attending Students.

School non-attendance due to difficulties waking up is increasing in Japan, and affected students are commonly diagnosed with orthostatic dysregulation (OD); however, OD-associated sleep problems are overlooked. To date, no sleep-medicine-based treatment for wake-up difficulties in non-school-attending students has been established. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a novel combination therapy for these students.

The histone methyltransferase G9a is expressed in various types of cancer cells, including colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. Interleukin 8 (IL)-8, also known as C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 8 (CXCL8), is a chemokine that plays a pleiotropic function in the regulation of inflammatory responses and cancer development. Here, we examined the relationship between G9a and IL-8 and the clinical relevance of this association.

Grip strength as a predictor of postoperative delirium in patients with colorectal cancers.

Background: The population is aging rapidly, and the population of patients who undergo surgeries is aging, too. Elderly patients have much risk of postoperative delirium, which increases the number of adverse events. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors of postoperative delirium in elderly patients with colorectal cancer.

Mucosal block (MB) is induced by the oral administration of excess iron (10 mg) and suppresses intestinal iron absorption for 3-72 h. The inhibition of iron absorption is accompanied by the downregulation of molecules associated with intestinal iron absorption. Recently, we found that a smaller amount of iron (1 mg) also induced a transient suppression of iron uptake without affecting gene expression levels (short-acting mucosal block, SAMB), which is specific to iron-deficient rats.

The lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-triggered coagulation cascade in horseshoe crabs is composed of three zymogens belonging to the trypsinogen family: prochelicerase C, prochelicerase B (proB) and the proclotting enzyme (proCE). Trypsinogen-family members contain three conserved disulphides located around the active site. While it is known that proB evolutionarily lost one of the disulphides, the His-loop disulphide, the roles of the missing His-loop disulphide in proB remain unknown.

Insomnia as a Symptom of Rapid Eye Movement-Related Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Rapid eye movement (REM)-related obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a polysomnographic phenotype that affects 12-36% of OSA patients, is defined by apnea and hypopnea events that predominantly or exclusively occur during REM sleep. Recent studies indicated that REM-related OSA was associated with the development of nocturnal non-dipping of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and depressive symptoms. However, to date, the association between REM-related OSA and insomnia still remains unclear.

Gastric volvulus is the medical situation that a stomach is twisted beyond the physiological range. It is a rare disease which is hard to experience in routine medical examination. Principally surgical treatment is essential for the acute type.
