Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the ability of deep learning algorithms and experienced physicians to diagnose gangrenous cholecystitis from CT images, assessing the potential for diagnostic aid in urgent cases.
  • It analyzed data from 154 patients, training a convolutional neural network (CNN) with a significant number of images and testing its performance against three blinded physicians.
  • Results showed that the CNN outperformed the physicians in key metrics like sensitivity and accuracy, suggesting that deep learning models could be effective tools in clinical decision-making for acute cholecystitis.

Primary solitary sphenoid sinus mucocele is rare, generally presenting with headaches or eye symptoms at the anatomical site. We report the case of a 39-year-old woman incidentally diagnosed with sphenoid sinus mucocele during a complete medical checkup. Imaging revealed that the cystic wall had developed from the rear sphenoid sinus and had spread expansively to diminish the clivus; however, no symptoms were reported, and the patient was managed with close observation.

Purpose: Ultrahigh-resolution CT (UHRCT) with slice collimation of 0.25 mm × 160 and matrix size of 1024 × 1024 has become clinically available. We compared the image quality of temporal bone CT (TBCT) between UHRCT and conventional multidetector CT (MDCT).

Article Synopsis
  • - A 64-year-old man with a history of trauma and previous sinus surgery experienced recurrent orbitofrontal cholesterol granuloma, presenting symptoms like nasal congestion, loss of smell, and double vision.
  • - Initial CT scans indicated a mass linked to chronic sinusitis, leading to the diagnosis of cholesterol granuloma after endoscopic surgery removed the cyst.
  • - The lesion recurred after two months, requiring a Modified Lothrop (Draf III) procedure, which successfully prevented relapse over a five-year period, highlighting its effectiveness as a treatment option.

Purpose: Ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (UHRCT) is an emerging imaging technology that is able to achieve simultaneous 160 slices with super-thin 0.25 mm thickness. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of UHRCT to visualize laryngeal structure and kinetics.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma arising as a primary tumor in the frontal sinus is very rare. Moreover, it is often difficult to diagnose frontal sinus lesions. A 67-year-old Japanese man initially presented with diplopia and a swollen left upper eyelid.

Purpose: To determine the outcomes of vitrectomy with scleral imbrication in highly myopic eyes with either myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) or macular hole retinal detachment (MHRD).

Methods: The medical records of 17 patients who had undergone vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling and scleral imbrication for MTM or MHRD were reviewed. The best-corrected visual acuities (BCVAs), the axial length, the macular hole (MH) closure rate, and the shape of the posterior segment determined by optical coherence tomography were evaluated.
