Tumor development often requires cellular adaptation to a unique, high metabolic state; however, the molecular mechanisms that drive such metabolic changes in TFE3-rearranged renal cell carcinoma (TFE3-RCC) remain poorly understood. TFE3-RCC, a rare subtype of RCC, is defined by the formation of chimeric proteins involving the transcription factor TFE3. In this study, we analyzed cell lines and genetically engineered mice, demonstrating that the expression of the chimeric protein PRCC-TFE3 induced a hypoxia-related signature by transcriptionally upregulating HIF1α and HIF2α.

The joint Simon effect refers to inhibitory responses to spatially competing stimuli during a complementary task. This effect has been considered to be influenced by the social factors of a partner: sharing stimulus-action representation. According to this account, virtual interactions through their avatars would produce the joint Simon effect even when the partner did not physically exist in the same space because the avatars are intentional agents.

The subjective visual vertical (VV), the visually estimated direction of gravity, is essential for assessing vestibular function and visuospatial cognition. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying altered VV perception in stroke participants with unilateral spatial neglect (USN), specifically by examining their eye movement patterns during VV judgment tasks. Participants with USN demonstrated limited eye movement scanning along a rotating bar, often fixating on prominent ends, such as the top or bottom.

Background: 5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a naturally occurring metabolic precursor of heme, and 5-ALA combined with ferrous iron can induce heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in various cells. In this study, we investigated the cardioprotective effect of 5-ALA after myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury using a murine model.

Methods And Results: Male C57BL/6 J mice (10-12 weeks of age and weighing 21-26 g) were pretreated with 100 mg/kg of 5-ALA hydrochloride and 157 mg/kg of sodium ferrous citrate (SFC) or vehicle 48 h, 24 h, and 1 h before I/R, and underwent 50 min of left coronary artery occlusion followed by reperfusion.

Sex differences in the development and progression of cardiovascular disease manifest across multiple life stages. These differences are associated with variations in cardiovascular morphology and function between the sexes. Although estrogens and sex hormones are associated with sex differences in cardiovascular diseases in reproductive adults, the molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular sex differences during development are largely unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted RSV notification trends in Japan from 2018 to 2021, notably reducing reports in 2020.
  • In 2021, there was an unusual early peak in RSV cases, particularly among older children (ages 2 and above), with a rise in milder cases being treated in outpatient settings compared to hospitals.
  • Despite a rebound in RSV-related deaths in 2021, the overall numbers remained lower than those reported in 2018 and 2019, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring of RSV trends.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines how various muscle strengths and tongue pressure relate to exercise capacity in patients with oesophageal cancer, aiming to improve preoperative management through targeted prehabilitation strategies.
  • Data from 29 patients showed significant links between respiratory muscle strength and handgrip/lower limb strength, while tongue pressure did not correlate with these strengths but was related to dysphagia and nutritional status.
  • The findings suggest that effective prehabilitation should include exercise, nutritional support, and swallowing training, particularly for patients struggling with food intake, as indicated by tongue pressure assessments.

Background: Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) induces cardiac inflammation cooperatively with nuclear factor-κB and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3); MR blockers exert anti-inflammatory effects. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of esaxerenone, a novel MR blocker, in experimental myocardial infarction (MI) and its underlying mechanisms.

Pexophagy is a type of autophagy that selectively degrades peroxisomes and can be classified as either macropexophagy or micropexophagy. During macropexophagy, individual peroxisomes are sequestered by pexophagosomes and transported to the vacuole for degradation, while in micropexophagy, peroxisomes are directly engulfed by the septated vacuole. To date, some autophagy-related genes (ATGs) required for pexophagy have been identified through plate-based assays performed primarily under micropexophagy-induced conditions.

Aims: Wild-type transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTRwt-CM) is often accompanied by atrial fibrillation (AF), atrial flutter (AFL), and atrial tachycardia (AT), which are difficult to control because beta-blockers and antiarrhythmic drugs can worsen heart failure (HF). This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of catheter ablation (CA) for AF/AFL/AT in patients with ATTRwt-CM and propose a treatment strategy for CA.

Methods And Results: A cohort study was conducted on 233 patients diagnosed with ATTRwt-CM, including 54 who underwent CA for AF/AFL/AT.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and fluorinated polymers (FPs) have been extensively utilized in various industries, whereas their extremely high stability poses environmental persistence and difficulty in waste treatment. Current decomposition approaches of PFASs and FPs typically require harsh conditions such as heating over 400 °C. Thus, there is a pressing need to develop a new technique capable of decomposing them under mild conditions.

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is commonly associated with moderate-to-severe postoperative pain. Notably, various pain control strategies, a femoral nerve block (FNB) with a lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block (LFCNB), adductor canal block (ACB) with LFCNB, or periarticular cocktail injection (PI), have been investigated. However, no studies compare the effects of FNB with LFCNB, ACB with LFCNB, and PI for pain control after ACL reconstruction.

Article Synopsis
  • In Japan, the NESID program tracks weekly influenza cases from about 5,000 sites, although it doesn't report the number of tests done, while the NHO provides detailed data from its 140 hospitals regarding tests and positive cases.
  • Analysis from April 2011 to June 2022 shows that trends in NHO and NESID data are similar; however, NHO data indicates earlier rises in influenza positivity.
  • Despite low case counts during summer and the COVID-19 pandemic, many influenza tests were still conducted, suggesting that a limited number of sentinel sites and multiple indicators can effectively monitor national influenza activity.

A plasmonic metasurface composed of a self-assembled monolayer of gold nanoparticles allows for fluorescence imaging with high spatial resolution, owing to the collective excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance. Taking advantage of fluorescence imaging confined to the nano-interface, we examined actin organization in breast cancer cell lines with different metastatic potentials during cell adhesion. Live-cell fluorescence imaging confined within tens of nanometers from the substrate shows a high actin density spanning < 1 μm from the cell edge.
