Study finds that eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit D (EIF3D) may play an important role in aberrant alternative splicing (AS) events in tumors. AS possesses a pivotal role in both tumour progression and the constitution of the tumour microenvironment (TME). Regrettably, our current understanding of AS remains circumscribed especially in the context of immunogene-related alternative splicing (IGAS) profiles within Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSC).

Following the publication of the above article, an interested reader drew to the authors' attention that the 'Control' and 'NC' data panels for the invasion assay experiments with the FaDu cell line in Fig. 5D on p. 248 contained apparently overlapping data, such that they may have been derived from the same source, even though they were intending to have shown the results from different experiments.

Introduction: Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is a specific subgroup of papillary thyroid carcinoma and defined with the dimension ≤1 cm by the WHO. Although it shows a relatively high 10-year livability, the metastasis of PTMC into other tissues and organs seriously affects the daily life of patients with relatively high mortality. Therefore, the genetic basis for the metastasis of PTMC needs to be explored for effective therapeutic targets.

Background: Several recent studies have indicated that the lymph node ratio (LNR) is an independent prognostic factor for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LHSCC). The purpose of this paper is to assess the prognostic value of LNR and explore appropriate cutoff values by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: Pubmed, Embase (via Ovid), and Cochrane library were systematically searched for studies on the prognostic value of LNR in LHSCC up to October 31, 2019.

MicroRNA (miRNA/miR) has been identified to be a promising tool in treating pharyngolaryngeal cancer. The present study aimed to investigate the role of miR‑490‑5p in the regulation of proliferation, migration, invasion and epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT) of pharyngolaryngeal cancer cells. The data of miR‑490‑5p expression levels of 45 cases were obtained from the People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and the prediction of the target of miR‑490‑5p was conducted by bioinformatics and verified using a luciferase assay.

Article Synopsis
  • * It includes 230 patients, analyzing various IOS parameters (like respiratory resistance and reactance) while in different positions to find correlations with OSAS severity, which is measured through the Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI).
  • * The results indicate that specific IOS measurements, particularly reactance at 5 Hz, show strong predictive capability for OSAS, with a sensitivity of 73% and specificity of 84%, suggesting IOS could be a more accessible diagnostic tool. *

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the relationship between upper-airway narrowing and peripheral airway factors in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients, highlighting how decreased lung volume and increased lung pressure contribute to OSA severity, particularly in obese individuals.
  • - A total of 263 obese participants (193 males and 70 females) without prior lung diseases were analyzed; they were categorized into OSA and non-OSA groups based on nocturnal polysomnography, with further segmentation by gender due to different lung and airway characteristics.
  • - Results indicated that OSA patients had significantly reduced functional lung capacities and increased respiratory resistance compared to non-OSA individuals, regardless of BMI, suggesting that these lung volume decreases are linked to OSA severity for both genders.
