Chiral nonbonding interaction with -protected amino acid methyl esters used as chiral additives in achiral solvents allows dynamic induction of single-handed helical conformation in poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl)s (PQX) bearing only achiral substituents. Ac-l-Pro-OMe, for instance, allows induction of energy preference of 0.16 kJ mol per monomer unit for the -helical structure over the -helix in -butyl methyl ether (MTBE).

The possible association between maternal exposure to pyrethroid insecticides (PYRs) during pregnancy and infant development was explored. Levels of exposure to PYRs was assessed by metabolite (3-phenoybenzoic acid, 3-PBA) concentration in maternal spot urine sampled in the first trimester of index pregnancy, and infant development was assessed at 18 months of age using the Kinder Infants Development Scale (KIDS), which is based on a questionnaire to the caretaker. The relationship between KIDS score and maternal urinary 3-PBA levels was examined by a stepwise multiple regression analysis using biological attributes of the mother and infant, breast feeding, and nursing environment as covariates.

We present the solution-state NMR structures and preliminary functional characterizations of three venom peptides identified from the spitting spider Scytodes thoracica. Despite little sequence identity to other venom peptides, structural characterization reveals that these peptides contain an inhibitor cystine knot motif common to many venom peptides. These are the first structures for any peptide or protein from spiders of the Scytodidae family.

Pyrethroid insecticides have been shown to possess thyroid hormone disrupting properties in previous animal studies. In this study, the relationship between maternal exposure to pyrethroid insecticides during pregnancy and neonatal thyroid hormone status (free thyroxine (fT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in whole blood) and birth sizes were explored in 147 mother-neonate pairs in Tokyo. The concentration of 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) in maternal urine, sampled in the first trimester of gestation, was used for pyrethroid exposure assessment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate possible associations between concentrations of hydroxylated PCBs (OH-PCBs) and PCBs in the serum of women in the first trimester of pregnancy and thyroid hormone levels and body size of newborn infants in 79 mother-neonate pairs. We measured 16 OH-PCB isomers and 29 PCB isomers in the serum of Japanese women sampled at 11.1±1.

The neural crest (NC) is a group of cells located in the neural folds at the boundary between the neural and epidermal ectoderm. NC cells differentiate into a vast range of cells, including neural cells, smooth muscle cells, bone and cartilage cells of the maxillofacial region, and odontoblasts. The molecular mechanisms underlying NC induction during early development remain poorly understood.

Paraphilia refers to occasional concomitant disorders of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). When a restricted interest of PDD is focused on a sexual object, paraphilia may be develop as a problematic symptom. However, having this concomitant disorder does not always result in criminal behavior.

We examined clinicopathological characteristics and prognoses of seventy advanced colorectal cancer cases by measuring pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase (PyNPase) and dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) in tumor and normal tissue. PyNPase activities in cancerous tissue obtained from resected were 82.7 +/- 41.

We investigated the immune responses of patients with cholestatic and hepatitis C virus-positive (HCV-positive) liver cirrhosis by analysing T-cell subsets and cytokine levels in the portal and peripheral veins, using flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In cholestatic liver cirrhosis, the proportion of natural-killer (NK) T cells and interleukin (IL) 6 and IL-18 levels in the portal venous blood were significantly higher than those in the peripheral venous blood. In HCV-positive liver cirrhosis, the proportions of NK T cells and Fas+ T cells and IL-6 and soluble Fas levels in the portal venous blood were significantly higher than those in the peripheral venous blood.

The authors experienced an extremely rare case of secondary sclerosing cholangitis and portal hypertension developed as late complications of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) owing to Escherichia coli O157:H7 in a 2-year-old boy. HUS after E coli O157 infection is the most frequent cause of acute renal failure in childhood and occasionally is accompanied by extrarenal complications such as encephalopathy, cardiomyopathy, ischemic colitis, and pancreatitis. Rarely, late colonic stenosis may develop secondary to the ischemic damage.

A 69-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of anal bleeding and fatigue. The patient was previously diagnosed as having Evans' syndrome on the basis of hematological examination and had been treated with predonisolone for 8 years. On admission, severe anemia and thrombocytopenia were noted.

It has been established that cancer patients have immunosuppressive substances in their sera that depress cellular immunity. Although plasma exchanges have been attempted to remove these substances and to improve immunity to cancer, little is known about its mechanism from the viewpoint of cytokine pattern. The levels of the cytokines, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin 1beta, interleukin 6, interferon-gamma and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were determined simultaneously by the whole-blood assay and the PBMC assay in 20 patients with gastric cancer and in 10 healthy volunteers.

Conventional therapy for colorectal carcinoma using 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) has shown limited antitumor action. The purpose of our study was to investigate synergistic antitumor effects of the streptococcal preparation of OK-432 and 5-FU, and to elucidate the mechanisms of interaction between the 2 agents in mice. Biochemical modulation of OK-432 and 5-FU were determined in vivo against colon-26 carcinoma.

We estimated the time of occurrence of metachronous liver metastasis in colorectal cancer patients from tumor diameter and doubling time. Micro-metastasis was present prior to operation in most patients and a few metastatic cases could have been initiated by the surgical procedure. Portal chemotherapy is more effective against liver metastasis than intravenous infusion because a higher drug concentration in the liver can be obtained.

Endoscopical segmental piecemeal tumorectomy (ESPT) for nodular elevation of colorectal tumor is advantageous in terms of minimizing both surgical invasion and postoperative burden to the patients. Nodular elevation of colorectal tumors is said to occur when the body of the tumor is adenomatous and the surface of the focal cancer grows more horizontally into the lumen than vertically. We report here four cases of nodular elevation of colorectal tumors which were each treated by different surgical procedures.
