Cystic adventitial degeneration is an uncommon cause of arterial obstruction. Its etiology is debated. We report a case in which the left external artery was affected and the cystic mass communicated with the hip joint.

A 61-year-old man with congenital bicuspid aortic valve associated with aberrant coronary artery origin is presented. His aortic valve was severely stenotic with marked calcification. At the aortic valve replacement, it was found that the valve was markedly calcified and the bicuspid valve and both coronary ostia were very close to each other in a posteriorly positioned sinus of Valsalva.

The best means of managing tricuspid regurgitation associated with acquired valvular disease is still controversial. During the period from 1978 to 1988, 111 patients who had tricuspid regurgitation along with associated valvular dysfunction were treated in Kagoshima University Hospital. Patients with moderate to severe regurgitation underwent annuloplasty in 61 (Carpentier's in 39, DeVega's in 20, and Kay's method in 2) and valve replacement in 8.

The purpose of this report is to present a safe, simple technique for procurement of the heart, liver, and kidneys from a single donor with no warm ischemic time. Twenty mongrel dogs were divided into 5 groups of 3 recipients and 1 donor each. Liver and kidney mobilization was performed when the core temperature of the liver reached 27 degrees C, a result of ice slush in the abdominal cavity.

Actin has many diverse functions in the outer retina. To help elucidate its organization in this area, we have investigated the extent of its association with the actin cross-linking protein alpha-actinin. Ultrathin sections of chicken retina were double-immunolabelled with monospecific antibodies against actin and alpha-actinin.

The congenital bicuspid aortic valves usually become stenotic with severe calcification or regurgitant due to infective endocarditis (IE). However, pure aortic valve regurgitation without calcification or IE may be occurred. We report seven these cases out of 30 bicuspid valved patients who underwent aortic valve replacements.

Left-sided inferior vena cava (IVC) was identified preoperatively in the case of abdominal aortic aneurysm. At operation, the left-sided IVC and bilateral common iliac veins were severely pressed by the huge aneurysm, and the walls of these vessels were thin and fragile at the site adhered to the aneurysm. Careful dissection around the common iliac arteries resulted in a successful operation.

The phototransductive microvilli of arthropod photoreceptors each contain an axial cytoskeleton. The present study shows that actin filaments are a component of this cytoskeleton in Drosophila. Firstly, actin was detected in the rhabdomeral microvilli and in the subrhabdomeral cytoplasm by immunogold labeling with antiactin.

The outer limiting "membrane" (OLM) of the vertebrate retina comprises a series of heterotypic adherens junctions between the photoreceptors and the supportive Müller cells. These junctions appear to support the photoreceptors, which in teleosts, anurans, and birds are motile, and thus help them maintain their orientation with respect to incoming light. In an unusual role for this type of junction, they also provide a semipermeable barrier, preventing the diffusion of some proteins out of the extracellular space that surrounds the inner and outer segments of the photoreceptors.

A 40-year-old woman of atrial septal defect associated with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) was successfully operated upon under cardio-pulmonary bypass. Steroids had been given preoperatively, resulting in an increase of the platelet count from 0.7 X 10(4)/mm3 to 20.

In the majority of cases, total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (TAPVD) results in death in infancy or early childhood, with very few cases surviving until adulthood. We report here the surgical correction of TAPVD in two adult patients, a 43-year-old male and 51-year-old female. The postoperative course was uneventful in the two patients, both of whom showed marked improvement of clinical features.

Two kinds of mechanical valve, St. Jude Medical (SJM) and Björk-Shiley (B-S), in patients with single valve replacement have been evaluated on a view point of intravascular hemolysis. Cases were consisted of 78 SJM and 32 B-S for the mitral and 12 SJM and 36 B-S for the aortic positions.

A rare case of pure severe aortic regurgitation (AR) accompanied with congenital bicuspid aortic valve is presented. A 36-year-old female was admitted with rapid development of congestive heart failure. Examinations clarified severe AR with congenital bicuspid valve.

A small discrete concentration of actin filaments in the connecting cilium of vertebrate photoreceptors appears to have a role in the morphogenesis of the phototransductive disk membranes (Williams et al., '88). We have visualized these actin filaments in rat rod photoreceptors by decorating them with myosin subfragment-1.

We observed a case of withdrawal after abrupt discontinuation of mianserin. A 41-year-old woman was treated according to a diagnosis of depression, which was her 6th episode. Mianserin 30 mg/day, etizolam 1 mg/day and flunitrazepam 1 mg/day were administered.

A 24 year-old woman developed severe congestive heart failure due to combined aortic and mitral valve failures associated with infectious endocarditis. She was operated on double valve replacement. At the open heart surgery, 7 units of blood were transfused.

We have had experience in treating two patients with parkinsonism of which the first manifestation was depression. Case 1 was a 61-year-old woman. A diagnosis of depression had been made and repeated medication consisting mainly of antidepressants was given.

Legionnaires' disease is primarily a respiratory disorder, but recently several cases with extrapulmonary manifestations are reported. We report a case of Legionnaires' disease associated with pneumonia, diarrhea, central nerve disorders and rhabdomyolysis. The pathogenesis of rhabdomyolysis in Legionnaires' disease remains speculative.

The simple, safe, and feasible procurement technique for the heart and liver with no warm ischemic time is reported. Fifteen mongrel dogs were used to form two recipients and one donor combination in each experiment. A midline incision is extended from the suprasternal notch to the pubis, and a catheter is advanced into the aortic root by means of the brachiocephalic artery for monitoring systemic arterial pressure and later for coronary vascular washout with a cold cardioplegic solution.

Under conditions of constant darkness, rhabdom volume and the amount of visual pigment chromophore show circadian changes in the compound eye of the crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus. The present results indicate that an intrinsic circadian biological clock is involved in the control of the changes.
