Introduction: In children, respiratory distress due to upper airway obstruction (UAO) is a common complication of extubation. The quantitative cuff-leak test (qtCLT) is a simple, rapid and non-invasive test that has not been extensively studied in children. The objective of the ongoing study whose protocol is reported here is to investigate how well the qtCLT predicts UAO-related postextubation respiratory distress in paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients.

Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is one of the most life-threatening disorders resulting from adrenal cortex dysfunction. Symptoms and signs of AI are often nonspecific, and the diagnosis can be missed and lead to the development of AI with severe hypotension and hypovolemic shock. We report the case of a 13-year-old child admitted for cardiac arrest following severe hypovolemic shock.

Fetal, Preterm, and Term Neonate Exposure to Remifentanil: A Systematic Review of Efficacy and Safety.

Background: Owing to its pharmacodynamic properties, especially the rapid onset and short duration of its action, the use of remifentanil in obstetric anesthesia, as well as in neonatology, might be increasingly used.

Objective: We conducted a systematic review to assess the efficacy and safety of remifentanil in preterm and term neonates. Outcomes of interest were neonatal adaptation after fetal exposure; neonatal pain, distress, and discomfort control during invasive procedures; and the occurrence of hemodynamic effects or respiratory depression induced by remifentanil infusion.

Antenatal low-protein diet (LPD) exposure in rats induces IUGR and mimics BPD-related alveolarization disorders. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) plays a key role in normal lung development and was found deregulated following LPD exposure.

Transforming a paediatric ICU to an adult ICU for severe Covid-19: lessons learned.

During the first Covid-19 wave, our paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), like many others across the globe, was transformed into an adult ICU for patients with severe Covid-19, due to a shortage of adult ICU beds. Here, we provide a comprehensive description of all the conditions that must be fulfilled to successfully accomplish this transformation. Strong support from all hospital departments was crucial, as their activity was modified by the change.

Paediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 mimicking Kawasaki disease (Kawa-COVID-19): a multicentre cohort.

Background: Current data suggest that COVID-19 is less frequent in children, with a milder course. However, over the past weeks, an increase in the number of children presenting to hospitals in the greater Paris region with a phenotype resembling Kawasaki disease (KD) has led to an alert by the French national health authorities.

Methods: Multicentre compilation of patients with KD in Paris region since April 2020, associated with the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) ('Kawa-COVID-19').

Efficacy and Safety Aspects of Remifentanil Sedation for Intubation in Neonates: A Retrospective Study.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of remifentanil as a premedication in neonates undergoing elective intubation. This retrospective study focused on neonates admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Port-Royal, Paris Centre University Hospitals, France, between June 2016 and November 2017, who received remifentanil before an elective intubation. First, atropine (10 μg/kg) was administered intravenously as a bolus, followed by remifentanil, which was administrated continuously.
