Background: The motion of the heart is a result of the helicoidal arrangement of the myofibers in the organ's wall. We aimed to study the relationship between the wringing motion state and the degree of ventricular function in patients with cardiac amyloidosis (CA).

Methods: Fifty patients with CA and decreased global longitudinal strain (LS) were evaluated using 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography.

Long Term Prognostic Value of Contractile Reserve Assessed by Global Longitudinal Strain in Patients with Asymptomatic Severe Aortic Stenosis.

Background: Left ventricle (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) at rest has shown prognostic value in patients (pts) with severe aortic stenosis (SAS). Contractile reserve (CR) during exercise stress echo (ESE) estimated via GLS (CR-GLS) could better stratify the asymptomatic patients who could benefit from early intervention.

Aims: To determine the long-term prognostic value of CR-GLS in patients with asymptomatic SAS with an ESE without inducible ischemia.

The study aims to recruit in the next 5 years (2021-2025) ≥10,000 patients followed for ≥5 years (up to 2030) from ≥20 quality-controlled laboratories from ≥10 countries.

Influence of Ventricular Wringing on the Preservation of Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction in Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Background: The purpose of this work was to determine the influence of myocardial wringing on ventricular function in patients with cardiac amyloidosis (CA).

Methods: Fifteen healthy volunteers (group 1) and 34 patients with CA (17 with left ventricular ejection fractions [LVEFs] ≥ 53% [group 2] and 17 with LVEFs < 53% [group 3]) were evaluated using two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. A control group of mass-matched patients (n = 20) with left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and LVEFs ≥ 53% was also included.

Leflunomide-induced pulmonary hypertension in a young woman with rheumatoid arthritis: a case report.

Leflunomide, a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug, has been shown to be effective in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Among other side effects, systemic hypertension has been described, and also a case of possible pulmonary hypertension (PH) has been reported. Symptomatic PH in RA is rare.

[Hypothyroidism, dilated cardiomyopathy and nephrotic syndrome during pregnancy].

Hypothyroidism during pregnancy is infrequent, but its presence is associated with maternal and fetal complications. We present the case of a young pregnant woman with no previous history of cardiovascular disease, who consulted for orthopnea, chest pain and edema in both legs. Laboratory tests demonstrated a hypothyroid condition and a nephrotic syndrome with renal failure.

Usually an hyperdynamic circulatory state hallmarks the disease with low peripheral resistance, increased intravascular volume and cardiac output. However, right chamber dilatation with tricuspid valve regurgitation and cardiac failure are unusual.

Hospital and 1-year outcomes of septic syndromes in older people: a cohort study.

Purpose: Our objective was to describe the relationship between sepsis syndrome mortality and cognitive and physical disability in elderly persons.

Methods: A 1-year consecutive cohort study in clinical beds of a university hospital was performed. Variables were severity of sepsis syndrome, organ failure, functional status, age, sex, and positive cultures.
