Part I: Health issues of those experiencing trafficking: Background and context for dermatologists.

Human trafficking is a global human rights violation affecting millions of individuals across diverse demographic characteristics with severe health consequences. Despite the frequent interactions that exploited individuals have with health care systems, many remain unrecognized, positioning health care providers, including dermatologists, as critical first responders. In the first part of this three-paper series, we discuss the current landscape of human trafficking from a health care perspective, emphasizing the role of dermatologists in recognizing and responding to this issue.

Part II: Skin signs of human trafficking and intervention by dermatologists.

Human trafficking is a pervasive global health and human rights issue. The skin often bears the early and most visible signs of abuse and exploitation. Despite the visible nature of their trauma, affected patients frequently go unrecognized within health care settings due to a lack of standardized guidelines for identifying the dermatologic manifestations of trafficking.

Platelet-Rich Plasma: Advances and Controversies in Hair Restoration and Skin Rejuvenation.

Background: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and its combined therapeutic modalities have catalyzed new possibilities in dermatology; however, limitations in evidence and lack of consensus remain among clinicians regarding optimal composition, protocol, technique, and application.

Objective: To provide an update and analysis of the evidence for PRP in hair restoration and skin rejuvenation through review of recent available data, highlighting controversies and expert insights to guide future studies, and stimulate discourse and innovations benefitting patients.

Methods: A structured review and expert analysis of PubMed publications before October 2023, with a focus on recent literature from January 2020 through October 2023.

The Burden of Air Pollution on Skin Health: a Brief Report and Call to Action.

Introduction: Air pollution in North America has intensified due to wildfires in recent years. In 2023, the wildfires in the Canadian province of Quebec caused a southward spread of pollutants, negatively affecting air quality and thereby aggravating certain health conditions in northeastern USA. This study examines the impact of air pollution on atopic dermatitis (AD) and skin health and how wildfires can exacerbate the burden of disease.

Dermatology's role in the fight against human trafficking: A report from the AAD Ad Hoc Task Force and call to action.

While the majority of American Academy of Dermatology members have some broad awareness of human trafficking, most are not aware of it in their communities or of the skin signs that could prompt identification of those being exploited, and have requested educational resources to assist patients affected by trafficking. Deoxycholic Acid for Dercum Disease: Repurposing a Cosmetic Agent to Treat a Rare Disease.

Dercum disease is a rare condition characterized by multiple painful fatty tumors distributed throughout the body. There currently are no US Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for Dercum disease, and the treatments tried have shown little to no efficacy, leaving many patients with a profoundly negative impact on quality of life. We present a case series of 3 patients who were diagnosed with Dercum disease and were treated with deoxycholic acid (DCA), a therapy approved for adipolysis of submental fat.

Our Post-Zoom Reflection: Turning Off the Monitor.

Over a year ago, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in lockdowns and isolation, quickly shifting social interactions online. During this time, the authors cited worsening self-perception due to the altered and distorted image produced by front facing cameras, later called "Zoom Dysmorphia." A recent survey study was then conducted analyzing the mental health and self-image of people as they returned to in-person activities.

Life after lockdown: Zooming out on perceptions in the post-videoconferencing era.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply disrupted daily life across the globe, with profound effects on mental and physical health. After more than a year of isolation and communication via videoconferencing, people are returning to in-person activities.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate worsening self-perception, mental health, and anxiety with the return to in-person activities, with a focus on the influence of videoconferencing, social media, and the use of filters.

Identification of skin signs in human-trafficking survivors.

Human-trafficking survivors suffer significant physical, mental, and social health consequences, prompting them to seek health care services. Although there is research regarding identification protocols for human-trafficking victims, there is no framework outlining the dermatologic patterns of survivors of human trafficking. We sought to identify the dermatologic signs reported in human-trafficking victims to create a framework for dermatologists and the broader medical community to appropriately screen patients at risk.

Lower Extremity Salvage in the Setting of Bullous Pemphigoid Exacerbation: A Case Report.

Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune blistering disease where patients suffer from painful bullae, often covering large portions of the skin and requiring management with immune-suppression. Our case report of recurring bullous pemphigoid illustrates the importance of considering immunosuppressive perioperative management in patients with a history of autoimmune blistering even when the disease has been quiescent for some time. With multidisciplinary care and immune suppressive therapies in the perioperative period, a free flap complicated by recurrent bullous pemphigoid can be salvaged.

Zooming into cosmetic procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic: The provider's perspective.

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a massive shift toward virtual living, with video-conferencing now a primary means of communication for both work and social events. Individuals are finding themselves staring at their own video reflection, often for hours a day, scrutinizing a distorted image on screen and developing a negative self-perception. This survey study of over 100 board-certified dermatologists across the country elucidates a new problem of Zoom dysmorphia, where patients seek cosmetic procedures to improve their distorted appearance on video-conferencing calls.

The art of prevention: COVID-19 vaccine preparedness for the dermatologist.
