Incidence of acute kidney injury post cardiac surgery: a comparison of the AKIN and KDIGO criteria.

Background And Objectives: Data on urine output have not been routinely presented to define cardiac surgery-related acute kidney injury (AKI). We evaluated the incidence of AKI after cardiac surgery based on the AKIN and KDIGO criteria (considering serum creatinine concentration and urine output in the first 72 hours postoperatively) and compared the performance of the 2 criteria for AKI staging.

Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of adult patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacement, or CABG + valve replacement between October 2017 and April 2018 at a single institution.

Background And Objectives: Cardiac surgery is the surgical subspecialty most often associated with bleeding, bleeding disorders, and the need of blood products. Agents such as aprotinin, episilon-aminocaproic acid, and tranexamic acid are frequently used to aid the hemostasis of patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass. The objective of this report is to present the physiopathology of bleeding during cardiac surgeries and the current role of antifibrinolytics regarding their efficacy and complications when used in those procedures, with emphasis on tranexamic acid and aprotinin.

Arterial hypotension in myocardial revascularization surgery: influence of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

Background And Objectives: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) are widely used in hypertension and heart failure. Their prolonged use may lead to hemodynamic instability and hypotension during anesthetic induction. This study aimed at comparing the incidence of hypotension in patients chronically treated and non treated with ACEI, submitted to anesthesia for myocardial revascularization.
