Ophthalmic Manifestations of Congenital Zika Syndrome in Colombia and Venezuela.

Importance: The ocular manifestations and sequelae of Zika virus infection are not well known. Recently, the World Health Organization changed the declaration of Zika as a public health emergency and designated the viral outbreak and related microcephaly clusters as a long-term program of work. This change indicates the urgent need to evaluate and document ophthalmic manifestations in patients for timely management of this disease.

Needle gauge and tip designs for preventing post-dural puncture headache (PDPH).

Background: Post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is one of the most common complications of diagnostic and therapeutic lumbar punctures. PDPH is defined as any headache occurring after a lumbar puncture that worsens within 15 minutes of sitting or standing and is relieved within 15 minutes of the patient lying down. Researchers have suggested many types of interventions to help prevent PDPH.

Heart failure (HF) is currently one of the most significant healthcare problems in Spain and has a continuously increasing prevalence. Advances in our understanding of the various biological responses that promote cardiac remodelling and pulmonary venous congestion constitute the basis of current treatment. This article, prepared by members of the HF groups of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine, discusses the current therapeutic strategies for patients with congestion refractory to diuretic treatment.

A Review on Ubiquitination of Neurotrophin Receptors: Facts and Perspectives.

Ubiquitination is a reversible post-translational modification involved in a plethora of different physiological functions. Among the substrates that are ubiquitinated, neurotrophin receptors (TrkA, TrkB, TrkC, and p75) have been studied recently. TrkA is the most studied receptor in terms of its ubiquitination, and different E3 ubiquitin ligases and deubiquitinases have been implicated in its ubiquitination, whereas not much is known about the other neurotrophin receptors aside from their ubiquitination.

Role of the sugar moiety on the opioid receptor binding and conformation of a series of enkephalin neoglycopeptides.

Glycosylation by simple sugars is a drug discovery alternative that has been explored with varying success for enhancing the potency and bioavailability of opioid peptides. Long ago we described two O-glycosides having either β-Glucose and β-Galactose of (d-Met, Pro)-enkephalinamide showing one of the highest antinociceptive activities known. Here, we report the resynthesis of these two analogs and the preparation of three novel neoglycopeptide derivatives (α-Mannose, β-Lactose and β-Cellobiose).

HORMONAL SUPPLEMENTATION TRIGGERING CHOROIDAL NEOVASCULARIZATION IN HEALTHY YOUNG FEMALES.

Purpose: To report three cases of choroidal neovascularization after hormonal treatment for ovarian stimulation during a fertility therapy.

Methods: A comprehensive ophthalmic examination was performed in all cases including best-corrected visual acuity, color fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography.

Results: Three females in their thirties developed unilateral acuity vision loss and metamorphopsia.

INTRAVITREAL DEXAMETHASONE IMPLANT IN RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA-RELATED CYSTOID MACULAR EDEMA.

Purpose: To report the clinical outcome after intravitreal dexamethasone implant in patients with retinitis pigmentosa and cystoid macular edema.

Methods: Multicenter retrospective case series of eyes with retinitis pigmentosa and cystoid macular edema that underwent intravitreal dexamethasone implant. Primary outcome measures were best-corrected visual acuity in LogMAR and central macular thickness.

Community-Based Accompaniment with Supervised Antiretrovirals for HIV-Positive Adults in Peru: A Cluster-Randomized Trial.

We conducted a cluster-randomized trial to estimate effects of directly observed combination antiretroviral therapy (DOT-cART) on retention with viral suppression among HIV-positive adults in Peru. We randomly allocated facilities to receive the 12-month intervention plus the standard of care, including adherence support provided through accompaniment. In the intervention arm, health workers supervised doses, twice daily, and accompanied patients to appointments.

SURGICAL OUTCOMES AND COMPLICATIONS OF RHEGMATOGENOUS RETINAL DETACHMENT IN EYES WITH CHORIORETINAL COLOBOMA: The Results of the KKESH International Collaborative Retina Study Group.

Purpose: To study the outcomes of management of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in eyes with chorioretinal colobomas.

Methods: A retrospective review of 119 patients (119 eyes) with chorioretinal colobomas who underwent surgical repair for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was performed. Data were collected on the site of the retinal break, type of surgery, anatomical success, and complications.

ANTERIOR LENS CAPSULE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC FULL-THICKNESS MACULAR HOLE.

Purpose: To report the use of anterior lens capsule flap transplantation in two cases with chronic full-thickness macular hole (MH).

Methods: Case series.

Results: Two cases of chronic MH with a new treatment approach were reported.

OUTCOMES OF ANTI-VEGF THERAPY IN CHOROIDAL NEOVASCULARIZATION AFTER MACULAR SURGERY.

Purpose: To report treatment outcomes of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy in choroidal neovascularization (CNV) presenting after macular surgery.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of 7 eyes of 7 patients, who were diagnosed to have CNV after macular surgery and were treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy. Collected data included demographic details; history of present illness; surgical procedure; and clinical examination including visual acuity at presentation and follow-up with imaging and management.

Social regulation of the lymph node transcriptome in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Previous research has shown that adverse social conditions may promote a conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA) involving up-regulation of proinflammatory gene expression and down-regulation of Type I interferon anti-viral genes in circulating blood cells. However, the impact of social conditions on lymphoid tissue gene regulation remains largely unexplored. This project assessed how social instability in adult male rhesus macaques (N=10, 5 in unstable, and 5 in stable social conditions) might regulate gene expression within secondary lymphoid tissue (lymph nodes; LN).

Antitumoral Effects of D-Fraction from Grifola Frondosa (Maitake) Mushroom in Breast Cancer.

D-Fraction is protein-bound β-1,6 and β-1,3 glucans (proteoglucan) extracted from the edible and medicinal mushroom Grifola frondosa (Maitake). The antitumoral effect of D-Fraction has long been exclusively attributed to their immunostimulatory capacity. However, in recent years increasing evidence showed that D-Fraction directly affects the viability of canine and human tumor cells, independent of the immune system.

PurposePlacental growth factor (PlGF) is a member of the VEGF family that plays an important role in experimental models of diabetic retinopathy and retinal neovascularization. We aimed to investigate whether vitreous levels of PlGF correlated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) status, VEGF levels, and bevacizumab treatment. We also analysed PDR membranes to confirm the presence of the PlGF receptor, FLT1, in endothelial cells.

Choroidal thickness and visual prognosis in type 1 lesion due to neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Purpose: To evaluate the association between subfoveal choroidal thickness and the visual outcome in eyes with type 1 choroidal neovascularization (CNV) due to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).

Methods: This was a retrospective, longitudinal, cross-sectional study including patients diagnosed with nAMD type 1 lesions managed with intravitreal injections of ranibizumab in a PRN strategy during 24 months. Retrospective chart review of patients with type 1 CNV recording the visual acuity, number of intravitreal injections, multimodal imaging data, and follow-up period was performed.

Lauryl gallate loaded in superparamagnetic poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles surface modified with folic acid were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization in just one step. In vitro biocompatibility and cytotoxicity assays on L929 (murine fibroblast), human red blood, and HeLa (uterine colon cancer) cells were performed. The effect of folic acid at the nanoparticles surface was evaluated through cellular uptake assays in HeLa cells.

Selective and differential interactions of BNN27, a novel C17-spiroepoxy steroid derivative, with TrkA receptors, regulating neuronal survival and differentiation.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) holds a pivotal role in brain development and maintenance, been also involved in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we provide evidence that a novel C17-spiroepoxy steroid derivative, BNN27, specifically interacts with and activates the TrkA receptor of NGF, inducing phosphorylation of TrkA tyrosine residues and down-stream neuronal survival-related kinase signaling. Additionally, BNN27 potentiates the efficacy of low levels of NGF, by facilitating its binding to the TrkA receptors and differentially inducing fast return of internalized TrkA receptors into neuronal cell membranes.

β-Adrenergic-stimulated macrophages: Comprehensive localization in the M1-M2 spectrum.

β-Adrenergic signaling can regulate macrophage involvement in several diseases and often produces anti-inflammatory properties in macrophages, which are similar to M2 properties in a dichotomous M1 vs. M2 macrophage taxonomy. However, it is not clear that β-adrenergic-stimulated macrophages may be classified strictly as M2.

Ubiquitination of the TrkA neurotrophin receptor in response to NGF is critical in the regulation of TrkA activation and functions. TrkA is ubiquitinated, among other E3 ubiquitin ligases, by Nedd4-2. To understand mechanistically how TrkA ubiquitination is regulated, we performed a siRNA screening to identify deubiquitinating enzymes and found that USP36 acts as an important regulator of TrkA activation kinetics and ubiquitination.
