  • Most undergraduate physiotherapy programs in Brazil lack courses on evidence-based practice (EBP), with only 9.4% offering such courses and an average duration of 44.3 hours.
  • There is a regional disparity, with the North region providing a higher percentage of EBP courses despite fewer overall programs compared to the Southeast.
  • The study highlights a need for improved EBP incorporation in curricula to enhance the training and decision-making abilities of future physiotherapists in Brazil.

Purpose: Impaired respiratory muscle strength has been associated with some geriatric syndromes. However, no studies have previously evaluated the relationship between respiratory muscle strength and dynapenic abdominal obesity. This study aimed to analyze whether there is an association between respiratory muscle strength and abdominal obesity, dynapenia and dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) in community-dwelling older adults.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the factors related to fear of falling among older adults, focusing on socioeconomic, clinical, and health-related aspects through a cross-sectional analysis of 410 participants.
  • Direct associations with fear of falling include being female, having more health issues, poor physical performance, and higher depressive symptoms, while indirect associations are linked to physical inactivity and self-rated health.
  • Findings enhance the understanding of how various predictors interact to influence fear of falling, providing insights for better support and intervention strategies for older adults living in the community.

  • The article investigates dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) in older adults in Macapa, Brazil, through a study of 382 participants.
  • DAO was identified as having low handgrip strength and increased abdominal circumference, with a prevalence of 10.73% among the subjects.
  • The study found that gait speed was a significant predictor of DAO, highlighting its potential as a key indicator for health management in this population.

The association between the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score and several adverse health outcomes, including mortality, has been reported in the scientific literature. We conducted a comprehensive literature review of studies on the relationship between SPPB and mortality. The current paper synthesizes the characteristics and main findings of longitudinal studies available in the literature that investigated the role of the SPPB in predicting mortality in older adults.

Purpose: No studies have previously analyzed the association between dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) and pulmonary function in older adults. The aim of this study was to analyze whether there is an association between pulmonary function and abdominal obesity, dynapenia, and DAO in community-dwelling older adults.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with community-dwelling older adults (n = 383) of Macapá, Amapá, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the psychosocial impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on older adults living in the community, focusing on social isolation and loneliness.
  • Conducted through telephone surveys of 86 participants aged 60 and above in Macapa, Brazil, the study finds that while a small percentage had Covid-19, issues like social isolation and loneliness were still prevalent among them.
  • Results indicate a moderate correlation between loneliness and the number of diseases, suggesting that while older adults may seem resilient, loneliness is still a significant issue with potential health implications during the pandemic.

Background And Purpose: Diminished pulmonary function is associated with negative health outcomes and pulmonary impairment, and can be associated with frailty. The objectives of this study were to compare pulmonary function between frail, prefrail, and nonfrail older adults; to verify the association between pulmonary function and frailty syndrome; and to establish cut-off points for pulmonary function variables for predicting frailty.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 379 community-dwelling older adults of both sexes.

  • The study explores the link between sedentary behavior and frailty in older adults living in Macapá, Amapá, Brazil.
  • Among 411 participants, 12.9% were frail, and 58.4% were pre-frail, with an average of about 2.86 hours of sedentary time daily.
  • Results indicated that increased sedentary behavior was significantly associated with higher odds of being pre-frail and frail.

The aim of this study is to verify the utility of using physical performance to discriminate the presence of dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) in older adults. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 382 community-dwelling older adults. DAO was identified when dynapenia (cut-off points of <26 kilogram-force [kgf] for men and <16 kgf for women) was detected together with abdominal obesity (waist circumference >102 cm for men and >88 cm for women).

Article Synopsis
  • Several health information sources help physical therapists in Brazil make clinical decisions for knee osteoarthritis, but reliance on evidence-based practice is low.
  • A survey of 370 physical therapists showed that clinical experience, courses, and books were the most commonly used sources of information, with only 12.1% frequently using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro).
  • There is a significant gap between research evidence and clinical practice, highlighting a need for better education and strategies to improve the use of evidence-based resources.

Background: Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome associated with negative health outcomes and the use of viable alternative screening tools may help in the diagnosis of this condition. This study aimed to analyze the association of sarcopenia with anthropometric indicators among community-dwelling older adults and to identify cut-off points for such indicators as a discriminant criterion for predicting sarcopenia.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on community-dwelling older adults ≥60 years old (n = 411) of both sexes from Macapá, Amapá, Brazil.

Objectives: To compare obtained and predicted inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength between frail, pre-frail, and non-frail older people; to examine the association between inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength and frailty in older people; and to determine cut-off points for inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength for discriminating frailty in older people.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 379 community-dwelling older adults. Frailty was assessed using Fried's phenotype, while inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength were measured with maximum inspiratory and maximum expiratory pressures.

  • The study aimed to explore the link between dyspnea (difficulty breathing) and physical performance in older adults aged 60 and over living in the community.
  • A total of 411 participants were evaluated, with about 30.9% experiencing some level of dyspnea, and results showed that higher dyspnea scores correlated with poorer physical performance, even after accounting for factors like frailty and socioeconomic variables.
  • The findings indicate that higher levels of dyspnea are independently associated with reduced physical performance, highlighting a potential concern for the health of elderly individuals.
