Food-Related Control and Person-Centered Care: Influences on Life Satisfaction in Long-Term Care Residents.

Upon entering long-term care (LTC) homes, residents relinquish control over their daily life choices, which may influence life satisfaction. This study explored hypothesized relationships among the concepts of person-centered care, locus of control (LOC), and life satisfaction of LTC residents. Survey data were collected and analyzed from 154 residents of 16 skilled nursing facilities in the Midwest.

The Use of a Novel Virtual Reality Training Tool for Peritoneal Dialysis: Qualitative Assessment Among Health Care Professionals.

Background: Effective peritoneal dialysis (PD) training is essential for performing dialysis at home and reducing the risk of peritonitis and other PD-related infections. Virtual reality (VR) is an innovative learning tool that is able to combine theoretical information, interactivity, and behavioral instructions while offering a playful learning environment. To improve patient training for PD, Fresenius Medical Care launched the stay•safe MyTraining VR, a novel educational program based on the use of a VR headset and a handheld controller.

Development of the Food-Related Control Scale for Long-Term Care.

Objective: Develop and test a Food-Related Control Scale (FRCS) measuring resident-perceived control in long-term care food service.

Design: A bank of 15 initial items based on a multidimensional locus of control construct was developed initially. Expert review, cognitive interviews, a pilot study, and factor analysis were used to validate the instrument and assess reliability.

Menu labeling influence on purchase behaviors: Applying the theory of planned behavior and health consciousness.

Mixed findings have been reported in the literature on the effectiveness of menu labeling in assisting consumers to make informed purchase decisions when eating out. Therefore, this study examined factors that influenced consumers' intentions to use menu labeling and whether these intentions influenced caloric purchases relative to actual caloric needs. While other researchers have assessed impacts of menu labeling on total calories purchased, our study assessed the impact relative to caloric needs, therein recognizing that each consumer has different caloric needs.

The goal of this research was to determine the prevalence of in Iowa retail delicatessens and assess environmental aspects that mitigate . Fifty-seven small and large retail delicatessens in Iowa were selected randomly. More small operations ( = 43) were included as compared with larger stores, given the higher frequency of violations.

Retrospectively analysed tooth loss in periodontally compromised patients: Long-term results 10 years after active periodontal therapy-Patient-related outcomes.

Background And Objective: Long-term tooth retention is the ultimate goal of periodontal therapy. Aim of this study was to evaluate tooth loss (TL) during 10 years of supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) in periodontal compromised patients and to identify factors influencing TL on patient level.

Material And Methods: Patients were re-examined 120 ± 12 months after active periodontal therapy.

Polarized tip growth is a fundamental process of specialized eukaryotic cells like neuronal axons, fungal hyphae, and plant root hairs and pollen tubes. In pollen tubes, a tip-focused oscillating Ca(2+) gradient governs ions fluxes, vesicle transport, and cytoskeleton dynamics to ensure proper polarized cell growth [1, 2]. While a crucial role of vacuolar Ca(2+) signaling is established for cellular movements like guard cell dynamics [3-5], its contribution to polarized growth remains to be defined.

A leadership survey was designed and administered to undergraduate dietetics students (n=283) at eight universities to examine leadership actions reported most frequently, the context of these leadership actions, and students' reported perceptions of themselves as leaders. The majority of students perceive themselves as leaders in all context areas. The leadership practice, "Enabling Others to Act," was the most frequently reported.

Bronchial allergen provocation: a useful method to assess the efficacy of specific immunotherapy in children.

Background: The clinical efficacy of subcutaneous allergen-specific immunotherapy (SCIT) varies between patients. New preparations are under development, and an objective tool with which to evaluate their efficacies in individual patients has become necessary. Our primary research question is whether bronchial allergen provocation (BAP) can be used to assess the efficacy of SCIT.

Varying influences of motivation factors on employees' likelihood to perform safe food handling practices because of demographic differences.

Food safety training has been the primary avenue for ensuring food workers are performing proper food handling practices and thus, serving safe food. Yet, knowledge of safe food handling practices does not necessarily result in actual performance of these practices. This research identified participating food service employees' level of agreement with four factors of motivation (internal motivations, communication, reward-punishment, and resources) and determined if respondents with different demographic characteristics reported different motivating factors.

By comparing the expression of p53, cyclin D1, p16, hTERT, and TSP-1 in spontaneously regressing keratoacanthoma (KA) as a paradigm of early neoplasia, with malignant invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) as a paradigm of advanced tumour development, we are now able to assign the changes in the expression of these proteins to specific stages and allocate them to defined roles in the multi-step process of skin carcinogenesis.

Breaking an absolute species barrier: transgenic mice expressing the mink PrP gene are susceptible to transmissible mink encephalopathy.

Transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) is a rare disease of the North American mink, which has never been successfully transmitted to laboratory mice. We generated transgenic mice expressing the mink prion protein (PrP) and inoculated them with TME or the mouse-adapted scrapie strain 79A. TME infected mink PrP-transgenic mice on a murine PrP knockout background.

The tosylate (p-toluenesulfonate) cluster [Bu4N]2[W6Cl8(p-OSO2C6H4CH3)6] (1) has been prepared and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and an X-ray crystal structure. This cluster complex is shown to be a useful starting material for the preparation of pseudohalide clusters, [Bu4N]2[W6Cl8(NCQ)6] (Q = O (2), S (3), and Se (4)), in high yields. Enzymatic synthesis, characterization, and metabolism of the coenzyme A ester of o-succinylbenzoic acid, an intermediate in menaquinone (vitamin K2) biosynthesis.

The enzymatic synthesis of the "active" o-succinylbenzoic acid is described and the factors controlling its formation are investigated. Tritium-labeled coenzyme A is incorporated into "active" o-succinylbenzoic acid, but label from [2-3H]ATP or [gamma-32P is not, indicating that the active compound is a coenzyme A thio ester(2). The compound is shown by two different methods to contain 1 mol only of coenzyme A per mol of o-succinylbenzoic acid.
