Fluoride varnishes were developed as alternatives to the conventional topical applications, mainly to prolong contact time between fluoride and teeth. Two marketed products, Duraphat and Fluor Protector, have been extensively tested and are generally accepted for clinical use. In this overview of fluoride varnishes the state of the art of both products is presented.

Blood glucose responses to test meals containing 75 g of different breads were compared in 103 type II diabetic patients under sulfonyl urea treatment. Nine breads differing in type of cereal, physical structure, and dietary fiber content were studied using pairwise intraindividual comparisons. It could be shown that the type of cereal and the fiber content had no significant influence upon the maximal or mean postprandial blood glucose increase.

An in vivo rat model was developed to determine cell-polymer interactions under physiological conditions. Microporous tubular grafts, made of polytetrafluoroethylene, a polyetherurethane, a polyesterurethane and also a modified polyetherurethane were implanted intraperitoneally in rats. The grafts were filled with cultured rat smooth muscle cells prior to implantation.

Efficacies of mixtures of diluted commercial formulations of selected insecticides and disinfectants were evaluated. Insecticides tested included representative pyrethroids (fenvalerate [Ectrin WDL and WD] and permethrin [Ectiban EC]), organophosphates (dichlorvos [Vapona EC], tetrachlorvinphos [Rabon WP] and dichlorvos/tetrachlorvinphos [RaVap EC], and a carbamate (carbaryl [Sevin S]). Disinfectants tested included representatives of cresylic acid (Biolene), cresylic acid/phenol (BioGuard X-185), phenol (1-Stroke Environ), quaternary ammonium (BioGuard S-3 and PFP-4), quaternary ammonium/formalin (DC & R), and formalin classes of disinfectants.

A case of a primary sarcomatous tumour in the liver of an elderly female is reported. The tumour consisted of bundles of spindle cells focally in a storiform pattern, intermingled with bizarre giant cells. Immunocytochemically, carcinoembryonic antigen, alpha-fetoprotein, keratin, desmin and type IV collagen could not be demonstrated.

To provide an anatomical basis for the interaction of respiration and vocalization, neuroanatomical tracing experiments were undertaken to define the link between the nucleus receiving input from the lung and the tracheosyringeal motor nucleus (nXIIts). The ventral parabrachial nucleus (PBv) receives a projection from the lateral parasolitary nucleus and from the midbrain and projects to nXIIts. The PBv is therefore well placed to gate the activity of nXIIts neurons during respiration.

Almost twice as much fatty acid was extracted without demineralization from the mature enamel of erupted teeth treated with 2:1 chloroform-methanol as from the enamel of unerupted teeth (32.64 micrograms/g versus 15.60 micrograms/g).

Mineral distributions with and without a softened surface layer were studied. The molar Ca:P ratio of released material was due to preferential Ca-loss significantly higher from surface-softened enamel than from lesions. The molecular weight (less than 1800) distributions of released proteinaceous matter were similar.

Two cell lines with different in vitro growth characteristics were established from a single mucinous colonic adenocarcinoma. Epithelial cells of the line 5583-E demonstrated anchorage-dependent growth while those of line 5583-S were anchorage-independent and grew as multicellular floating spheroids. Both cell lines shared common characteristics with respect to the expression of differentiation markers (secretory component, carcinoembryonic antigen), mucins and karyotype (trisomy 12 and 14, marker chromosome) but also showed consistent differences.

Anterograde and retrograde tracing experiments employing WGA-HRP were used to identify an auditory projection area within the frontal telencephalon of the pigeon. The projection originates in a nucleus of the lateral lemniscus, travels with the quintofrontal tract and terminates within nucleus basalis. The location of the projection area and the absence of a thalamic relay in its pathway are consistent with previous reports of short-latency auditory potentials evoked in the vicinity of the nucleus basalis in several avian species.

The alpha-glucosidase inhibitor BAY m 1099, a deoxynojirimycin derivative, was studied in sulfonylurea-treated type II diabetic patients using a placebo-controlled double-blind cross-over design. Given in two daily doses the inhibitor smoothened the blood glucose profile by lowering significantly post-prandial blood glucose peaks. Fasting and daily mean blood glucose levels measured as the area under the blood glucose curves were however not influenced significantly.

We have evaluated a time-resolved immunofluorometric assay (IFMA) for determining thyrotropin. This "sandwich"-type system involves two monoclonal antibodies directed against different epitopes. A linear relationship between signal and thyrotropin concentration was observed up to 6000 milli-int.
