Purpose: The Parry-Romberg syndrome is an unusual disorder frequently associated with epilepsy. The origin of this disease, and the cause of epilepsy, are unknown. This study is the first reported case of the Parry-Romberg syndrome, with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy, in which detailed microanatomic analyses have been performed on resected brain tissue obtained after surgical intervention.

Thalamocortical neurons innervating the barrel cortex in neonatal rodents transiently store serotonin (5-HT) in synaptic vesicles by expressing the plasma membrane serotonin transporter (5-HTT) and the vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT2). 5-HTT knock-out (ko) mice reveal a nearly complete absence of 5-HT in the cerebral cortex by immunohistochemistry, and of barrels, both at P7 and adulthood. Quantitative electron microscopy reveals that 5-HTT ko affects neither the density of synapses nor the length of synaptic contacts in layer IV.

The authors' objective was to determine by 2-dimensional echo Doppler (2DECHO) the cardiac abnormalities in juvenile onset ankylosing spondylitis (JOAS) and adult onset ankylosing spondylitis (AOAS) in male patients with long-term disease. Twenty patients with JOAS, 31 with AOAS, and 20 healthy controls of the same age and gender without cardiopulmonary symptoms were studied. Previously, the spatial arrangement of the carotenoid and bacteriochlorophyll molecules in the peripheral light-harvesting (LH2) complex from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila strain 10050 has been determined at high resolution. Here, we have time resolved the energy transfer steps that occur between the carotenoid's initial excited state and the lowest energy group of bacteriochlorophyll molecules in LH2. These kinetic data, together with the existing structural information, lay the foundation for understanding the detailed mechanisms of energy transfer involved in this fundamental, early reaction in photosynthesis.

Time-resolved, laser-induced changes in absorbance, delta A(lambda; t), have been recorded with a view to probing pigment-pigment interactions in chlorosomes (control as well as carotenoid-depleted) and artificial aggregates of bacteriochlorophyll e (BChle). Control chlorosomes were isolated from Chlorobium phaeobacteroides strain CL1401, whose chromophores comprise BChle, bacteriochlorophyll a (BChla) and several carotenoid (Car) pigments; Car-depleted chlorosomes, from cells grown in cultures containing 2-hydroxybiphenyl. The alveolar macrophage (AM) secretes interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8), all of them inflammatory cytokines involved in the pathogenesis of many lung diseases. The morphology of pyramidal neurones was revealed by intracellular injection of Lucifer Yellow (LY) in fixed tangential cortical slices taken from rat primary somatosensory cortex. Slices were processed with a combination of antibodies to allow visualization of both the LY-injected neurones and parvalbumin immunoreactive (PV-ir) cell bodies, by confocal microscopy. Senegales sole, Solea senegalensis, adult specimens were subjected to sublethal copper exposure (100 microg SO(4)Cu/L) for 7 days (contamination period) and afterward kept for 4 days without copper exposure (depuration period). In contaminated and detoxified specimens, the hepatocytes indicated a great number of lipid droplets compared to the control specimens. Some ultrastructural alterations such as partial disruption of the microvilli and endothelial lining of the sinusoids were observed in the hepatocytes.

The Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis has been exploited extensively in aquaculture from different countries; at present an intensive production of larvae and adults is being achieved with some nutritional problems. Since this species displays very different life styles and feeding habits at different stages of its life history (larvae, metamorphosis, adults), and because digestive mucins are implicated in different physiological processes including: increase of digestive efficiency, promotion of macromolecules-absorption, buffering of intestinal fluid, prevention of proteolytic damage to the epithelium and defence against bacteria, etc., we studied the histomorphological aspects, as well as the histochemical distribution of carbohydrates, (PAS, Alcian Blue), proteins (Bromophenol Blue), lipids (Oil Red O, Black Sudan B) and glycoproteins (Horseradish peroxidase-conjugated lectins) in the intestinal epithelium of adult Solea senegalensis specimens.

The cytoplasmic domain of CD28 contains four tyrosine residues. Because signal transduction by CD28 appears to involve its tyrosine phosphorylation, we determined sites of CD28 tyrosine phosphorylation using mutants of mouse CD28 that retained tyrosine at one position, with the remaining three positions mutated to phenylalanine. When expressed in Jurkat cells and stimulated by mAb, only the mutants with tyrosine at position 170 or 188 were tyrosine phosphorylated.

The transcriptionally active fragment of the yeast RNA polymerase II transcription elongation factor, TFIIS, comprises a three-helix bundle and a zinc ribbon motif joined by a linker region. We have probed the function of this fragment of TFIIS using structure-guided mutagenesis. The helix bundle domain binds RNA polymerase II with the same affinity as does the full-length TFIIS, and this interaction is mediated by a basic patch on the outer face of the third helix.
