Article Synopsis
  • - A quasi-experimental study tested the effects of photobiomodulation (a type of laser therapy) on bone mineral density (BMD) in eight patients with complete spinal cord injury and osteoporosis, applying the treatment on one side of the body and using the other side as a control.
  • - The treatment involved using a specific type of laser at various energy densities based on the bone's depth from the skin and was administered three times weekly for eight weeks, with BMD and vitamin D levels measured at the start, after treatment, and weeks later.
  • - Results showed significant BMD improvements in the proximal-femur and forearm regions, along with increased vitamin D levels, although no changes were noted in other areas or

Article Synopsis
  • Cell culture technology is widely used in cell biology and medical research, with primary cells providing a realistic representation of human physiology.
  • Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) are crucial in disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and are typically isolated from synovial tissue using enzymatic digestion.
  • This study introduces a faster and easier method for isolating FLS from synovial fluid, proving it to be more efficient and cost-effective than traditional techniques.

Expression of T cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (Tim-3) and programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) was studied on CD4 T cells of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Association of Tim-3 and PD-1 expression with disease activity of RA patients was also addressed. A total of 37 RA patients and 31 sex- and age-matched healthy controls were included in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • - Osteoporosis is characterized by decreased bone density and potential for fractures, with bisphosphonates being a new class of drugs used for treatment, but they can cause significant gastrointestinal (GI) side effects.
  • - In a clinical trial with 195 osteoporotic patients, participants were divided into three groups: a placebo group, a group receiving 70mg of Alendronate weekly, and another receiving 10mg daily, to assess GI symptoms over eight weeks.
  • - Results indicated that the placebo group experienced fewer GI complications, and while there was a significant difference between the placebo and Alendronate groups, both Alendronate dosages showed no major difference in side effects, highlighting the need for caution
