This study investigates the effectiveness of various chemical methods, both ultrasound-assisted and non-assisted, for extracting cellulose from banana pseudostem (BPS) waste, comparing the results with commercial pine and eucalyptus cellulose fibers. Delignification treatments with NaOH (25% and 30%) and HO (8%) were evaluated, applied with both conventional and focused sonication. Monometallic and bimetallic Cu:Ni catalysts with different Cu:Ni molar ratios (3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) were synthesized by wetness impregnation on activated carbon and characterized by TPR (temperature programmed reduction), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). The synthesized catalysts were evaluated in the gas phase production of diethyl carbonate from ethanol and carbon dioxide. The largest catalytic activity was obtained over the bimetallic catalyst with a Cu:Ni molar ratio of 3:1.

Selecting the optimal monitoring points in a water distribution network is challenging due to the complex spatiotemporal variability of water quality degradation. The lack of a standardized methodology for monitoring point selection forces operators to rely on general recommendations, historical data and professional experience, which can mask water quality problems and increase the risk to consumers. This study proposes a new methodology to optimize the selection of monitoring points in distribution networks.

Seminal Plasma Proteins Associated with The Fertility of Brahman Bulls in The Colombian Low Tropics.

The sperm interacts with seminal plasma proteins during its transport through the female reproductive tract to reach the oocyte. Seminal plasma proteins have been associated as biomarkers of fertility in bovine males, while two-dimensional electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels under denaturing conditions (2D-PAGE) is a useful technique for their separation, allowing their subsequent analysis with the aid of specialised software. Brahman bulls are known for their tolerance to tropical conditions such as low-quality pastures, high temperatures, and relative humidity as well as moderate resistance to infestations by parasites and insects.

Wolfram Syndrome 1 in Two Brothers Treated with Insulin Pump.

Background/objective: Wolfram syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder, in which patients develop early-onset diabetes mellitus (DM), optic nerve atrophy, and neurodegeneration, which has no specific treatment available. Here, we report 2 brothers treated with an insulin pump to manage the alterations of the glycemic levels due to the DM.

Case Report: We present the case of 2 siblings diagnosed with Wolfram syndrome 1, they presented with typical endocrinological and neurodegenerative early manifestations, one brother was treated with a sensor-augmented insulin infusion system, and the other with an insulin pump.

Kinetic Study of Liquid-Phase Glycerol Hydrodeoxygenation into 1,2-Propanediol over CuPd/TiO-Na.

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) kinetics of glycerol into 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) in the liquid phase is studied on Cu-Pd/TiO catalysts. At a stirring speed higher than 480 rpm and an average diameter of the catalyst particles smaller than 89.5 μm, no mass transfer resistance artifacts are observed.

Spatiotemporal optimization of water quality degradation monitoring in water distribution systems supplied by surface sources: A chronological and critical review.

Drinking water may undergo spatiotemporal changes in quality as it leaves the treatment plant and enters the distribution system. This variability means that not all consumers receive water of the same quality. Monitoring water quality in distribution networks makes it possible to verify the compliance of current regulations and reduce consumption risks associated with water quality degradation.

Background: Several subtypes of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) have been proposed. Most reports use small samples, and few have included Spanish-speaking participants.

Aim: To analyze the language profile and nonlinguistic deficits in a large sample of PPA Spanish monolingual participants.

Sexual behavior and seminal characteristics of Brahman bulls in the Colombian tropical flooded savanna: effects of reproductive management systems and climatic periods.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the seminal traits and sexual behaviors of mature Brahman bulls in a multi-sire system during mating or resting seasons and different climatic periods of the year at the Colombian flooded savannas. Thirty-two Brahman bulls, suitable for reproduction, were used, which were subjected to breeding soundness evaluation, as well as the libido and service capacity tests. Such evaluations were compared among different seasons of the year in relation to the rainfall.

3,5-Dinitrosalicylic Acid Adsorption Using Granulated and Powdered Activated Carbons.

Some nitroaromatic compounds are found in wastewater from industries such as the weapons industry or the wine industry. One of these compounds is 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS), widely used in various tests and frequently found as an emerging pollutant in wastewater and to which the required attention has not been given, even though it may cause serious diseases due to its high toxicity. This study investigated the adsorption of DNS using granulated activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) at different temperatures.

Background: Bilingualism may affect the profile of cognitive disturbances associated with stroke. Its impact on aphasia severity, however, is in need of substantiation.

A Longitudinal Study of Aphasia Due to Pure Sub-Cortical Strokes.

Introduction: Contemporary neuro-imaging techniques have significantly advanced our understanding of the brain organization of language and the involvement of subcortical areas in aphasia. However, articles on sub-cortical aphasia, particularly in non-western languages, remain to be few and far between. We set out to explore aphasia typology in sub-cortical strokes among Bengali-speaking population with a focus towards providing a longitudinal view over a period of 3 months post-stroke.

Dyskinetopsic Palinopsia: Palinopsia Accompanied by Moving Afterimages.

Palinopsia refers to the abnormal persistence, or recurrence, of visual images after a visual stimulus has subsided. We describe here a case of palinopsia accompanied by a visual motion perception disorder as manifested by moving afterimages. A 71-year-old man presented to us after having experienced acute-onset, vivid, visual hallucinations for 1 week.

Acalculia in Aphasia.

Background: Patients with aphasia can present a type of acalculia referred to as aphasic acalculia.

Aims: To investigate the correlation and to test regression models for one- and two-digit calculation skills using verbal and nonverbal predictors.

Gerstmann Syndrome.

Purpose Of Review: Gerstmann (left angular gyrus) syndrome includes the tetrad of finger agnosia (inability to distinguish, name, and recognize the fingers), agraphia (acquired disturbance in the ability to write), acalculia (loss of the ability to perform arithmetical operations and use numerical concepts), and right-left disorientation (right-left discrimination defect when using language). There is some disagreement regarding its exact localization, but it most likely involves the left angular gyrus with a probable subcortical extension. This article reviews recent research on the clinical aspects of this syndrome.

Nature and Distribution of Cu and Pd Species in CuPd/TiO-Na Bimetallic Catalysts for Glycerol Hydrodeoxygenation.

We demonstrated recently that CuPd/TiO-Na bimetallic catalysts synthesized by sequential wet impregnation are active, selective, and stable for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of glycerol into propylene glycol at low H pressure. The present study reports on the nature and distribution of Cu and Pd surface species in CuPd/TiO-Na bimetallic catalysts using different scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques that supply cluster-specific alloying details. In particular, we used atomic-resolution -contrast imaging, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy.

Alexia and agraphia in Spanish.

Background: Every language has certain specific idiosyncrasies in its writing system. Cross-linguistic analyses of alexias and agraphias are fundamental to understand commonalities and differences in the brain organization of written language. Few reports of alexias and agraphias in the Spanish language are currently available.

COVID-19 Pandemic: A Neurological Perspective.

Even though severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been observed to principally affect the respiratory system, neurological involvements have already been reported in some published work. We have reviewed original articles, case reports, and existing open-source data-sets to delineate the spectrum of neurological disorders potentially observed in SARS-CoV-2 positive cases. Neurological involvement in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) corresponds to three situations: (a) neurological manifestations of viral infection, (b) post-infective neurological complications, and (c) infection in patients with neurological co-morbidity.

Standalone lordotic endoscopic wedge lumbar interbody fusion (LEW-LIF™) with a threaded cylindrical peek cage: report of two cases.

We report two cases of a standalone lordotic endoscopic wedge lumbar interbody fusion (LEW-LIF™) with a stress-neutral non-expandable cylindrical threaded polyether ether ketone (PEEK) interbody fusion implant. Patients underwent full-endoscopic transforaminal decompression and fusion for symptomatic lateral recess stenosis due to disc herniation, and hypertrophy of the facet joint complex and ligamentum flavum and no more than grade I spondylolisthesis. Lumbar interbody fusion with cages traditionally calls for posterior supplemental fixation with pedicle screws for added stability.
